Embodying Music: Matching Music and Dance in Memory

We examined the ability to detect a match between a piece of music and a dance intended to express it. We used three pieces of music and three dances, and we presented these under the four following conditions. (1) Sequential selection: participants were presented with a piece of music and then selected, from among three sequentially presented dances, the one that best matched the music; or they were presented with a dance and then selected, from among three sequentially presented musical pieces, the one that best matched the dance. (2) Sequential judgment: participants were presented with a piece of music followed by a dance, or with a dance followed by a piece of music, and decided how well these matched. (3) Simultaneous judgment: participants were presented simultaneously with a piece of music and a dance and decided how well these matched. (4) Isolated presentation: participants were presented with either a dance or a musical piece and answered questions about its characteristics and their responses to it. Participants in the first three conditions answered similar questions about how they made their decision about the match between music and dance. A total of 942 university students participated. In the sequential selection condition, participants successfully matched the music with the dance intended to express it. In the sequential judgment and simultaneous judgment conditions, participants acknowledged matches between congruent music and dance, but also noted matches between music and dance not intended to be congruent. The various means by which participants detected a match between music and dance are examined.

Abstract Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global societal challenge requiring the contribution of professionals along with general community citizens for their containment. Portugal is one of the European countries where a lack of knowledge on the correct use of antimicrobials and AMR problematic is preeminent. Moreover, youth demotivation to pursue science careers is emerging. To address these problems an innovative experimental service-learning pedagogical strategy, MicroMundo@UPorto, was implemented in Portugal during 2018 through University of Porto as a partner of the global Citizen Science project ‘Tiny Earth’ responding to the AMR crisis. In this first edition of MicroMundo@UPorto, university students (n = 41; Pharmaceutical Sciences and Nutrition Sciences) organized in eight teams tutored by university professors/researchers (n = 13) on Microbiology and AMR theoretical and practical aspects as well on communication skills to enable their guidance of younger school students (n = 140/3 schools) in experiments to discover antimicrobial-producing microorganisms while exploring the soil microbial diversity. Post-survey-based evaluation revealed that this project allowed university students to acquire diverse personal, social and scientific skills while increasing AMR awareness, in the One-Health perspective, and interest for science in school students. This University to Society approach can be successfully extended across Portugal and for education in Microbiology in general, with benefits for the future generations contributing to socially responsible and scientifically-literate citizens.

University students consume live music; however, almost 40% declare that they have never attended a flamenco show, an intangible heritage of humankind. Numerous studies have shown that cultural capital and socioeconomic profile, among other factors, are variables that influence cultural consumption, and therefore, cultural sustainability. Considering the relationship between several variables, this paper pursues a double objective. On the one hand, identifying the factors that influence attendance at flamenco shows, and on the other, proposing a predictive model that quantifies the likelihood of an individual attending a flamenco show. To this end, we analyse flamenco consumption by means of a survey conducted on 452 university students, using Multilayer Perceptrom (a non-parametric model), a methodology based on an artificial neural network. Our results confirm the importance of cultural capital, as well as personal and external factors, among other. The findings of this research work are of potential interest for management and planning of cultural events, as well as to promote cultural sustainability.

The 21st-century skills are considered to be needed by individuals in a changing world. The aim of this research study is to determine whether or not the self-efficacy perceptions of students enrolled in the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Literature, and the Faculty of Nursing (health) pertaining to the 21st-century skills cause any difference among the faculties. The population of the research is comprise of 1,056 students, 841 females and 215 males, at Ege University during the fall semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. “21st Century Skills Self-efficacy Perception” scale, which has 3 subdimensions such as “Learning and Renewal (LR) Skills,” “Life and Career (LC) Skills,” and “Information, Media and Technology (IMT) Skills,” is utilized in the study. The research study is designed in accordance with the causal-comparative model. In the data analysis, independent groups t-test is performed to detect differences in terms of gender, whereas the one-way analysis of variance) techniques are conducted to detect differences in terms of faculties. The margin of error is determined as .05 in the study. No significant difference is detected in the LR skills of university students in terms of the gender variable. It is found that a significant difference exists according to gender in the subdimension of LC skills. No significant difference is observed according to gender variable in the subdimension of IMT skills of university students. According to this result, the LC skills of female students are detected to be higher than that of male students. It is observed that the LR skills of the students in the faculty of education are higher than that of the students in the faculty of health sciences. It is determined that a significant difference exists in the LC skills of university students according to the faculty of education variable. It is determined that the LC skills of the students in both the faculties of education and literature are higher than that of the students in the faculty of health sciences. Furthermore, it is determined that the IMT skills of the students in the faculty of education and the faculty of literature are higher than that of the students in the faculty of health sciences.

Abstract The aim of this study was to construct and seek evidence for the validity of the Escala de Benevolência frente à Esquizofrenia (Benevolence Toward Schizophrenia Scale). Two studies were conducted in Joao Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Study 1 describes the development and evidence of the factor validity of the Benevolence Toward Schizophrenia Scale with a sample composed of 200 university students aged 16 to 51 years old (M = 25.31; SD = 7.21). The data were subjected to exploratory factor analysis, which revealed one single seven-item factor that explained 37.74% of the variance and a satisfactory Cronbach’s alpha (0.77). The aim of Study 2 was to test the goodness-of-fit of the Benevolence Toward Schizophrenia Scale factor structure with a sample composed of 200 university students aged 16 to 52 years old (M = 24.82; SD = 6.97). The one-factor structure exhibited adequate goodness-of-fit; the composite reliability value was 0.83, which indicates scale stability and satisfactory psychometric parameters for assessing benevolent prejudice toward schizophrenia.

AbstractThe aims: (i) analyze connectivity between subgroups of university students, (ii) assess which bridges of relational contacts are essential for connecting or disconnecting subgroups and (iii) to explore the similarities between the attributes of the subgroup nodes in relation to the pandemic context. During the COVID-19 pandemic, young university students have experienced significant changes in their relationships, especially in the halls of residence. Previous research has shown the importance of relationship structure in contagion processes. However, there is a lack of studies in the university setting, where students live closely together. The case study methodology was applied to carry out a descriptive study. The participation consisted of 43 university students living in the same hall of residence. Social network analysis has been applied for data analysis. Factions and Girvan–Newman algorithms have been applied to detect the existing cohesive subgroups. The UCINET tool was used for the calculation of the SNA measure. A visualization of the global network will be carried out using Gephi software. After applying the Girvan–Newman and Factions, in both cases it was found that the best division into subgroups was the one that divided the network into 4 subgroups. There is high degree of cohesion within the subgroups and a low cohesion between them. The relationship between subgroup membership and gender was significant. The degree of COVID-19 infection is related to the degree of clustering between the students. College students form subgroups in their residence. Social network analysis facilitates an understanding of structural behavior during the pandemic. The study provides evidence on the importance of gender, race and the building where they live in creating network structures that favor, or not, contagion during a pandemic.

El presente trabajo pretende analizar la opinión que los estudiantes universitarios de Turismo tienen respecto a desarrollar su futuro laboral en el área comercial de empresas turísticas, la que más oferta de puestos de trabajo genera en España. En concreto, se pretende conocer cuál es su percepción sobre este tipo de trabajo, tanto desde un punto de vista personal como profesional. Para alcanzar estos objetivos, se ha encuestado a 348 estudiantes de diferentes cursos, de grado y posgrado, que han sido clasificados en función de su interés por trabajar como vendedores en el sector turístico. Los resultados muestran que, en general, la valoración de una futura actividad de tipo comercial es positiva. The current research intends to analyze the opinion that the tourism university students have regarding to develop their future labor in the commercial management area of tourist companies, the one that more offer of jobs generates in Spain. Specifically, we want to know what the perception of this type of work is, both from a personal and professional point of view. To achieve these objectives, 348 students, from different undergraduate and postgraduate courses, have been surveyed, who have been classified according to their interest in working as sellers in the tourism sector. The results show that, in general, the valuation of a future commercial activity is positive.

The problem is related to the prevalence of procrastination, including among students, on the one hand, and the lack of development of approaches to explaining the psychological mechanisms of procrastination, on the other. The article substantiates the possibility of explaining the phenomenon of procrastination in the context of resilience by referring to the categories of meaningfulness of life and existential fulfillment. The goal is to identify the features of the implementation of fundamental existential motivations by students with different levels of procrastination. Method of research. We used the Lay “General procrastination Scale” in the adaptation of Windecker, Ostanina, the” test of existential motivations “ by Shumsky, Ukolova, Osin, and Lupandina; methods of mathematical statistics (Mann-Whitney and Spearman criteria). Sample: 45 procrastinator students, 51 non-procrastinators, and 117 students with an average level of procrastination. Results. Significant differences between all groups were revealed, and there were significant correlations between the level of procrastination and the severity of existential motivations. Conclusion. It was revealed that the degree of existential fulfillment of procrastinator students differs from the other two groups. They have less money: 1) the desire to “be-in-the-world”; 2) the value attitude to life; 3) the desire to be oneself; 4) the desire for meaning. Students with an average level of procrastination, like non-procrastinators, have more realized the ability to freely be in the world and realize meaning, but less than non-procrastinators, the existential motivations “Value of life” and “self-Worth” are realized. It is proved that the theory of fundamental existential motivations can be used to explain procrastination.

The present study aims to investigate whether the psychometric results proposed by Goñi, Madariaga, Axpe & Goñi (2011) for the Personal Self-concept Questionnaire (APE, from its Spanish initials) are replicated. The total sample was 1485 Mexican university students, with an average age of 20.55 years (SD = 1.86). The factorial structure of the questionnaire was analyzed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The analyses show that a three-factor structure is feasible and appropriate. The structure of three factors (self-realization, autonomy, and emotional adjustment), based on statistical and substantive criteria, has shown adequate adjustment indicators of reliability and validity. However, the obtained model does not match the one proposed by Goñi et al. (2011). Future research should replicate these findings in larger samples.

From a Minute Book which has survived the years, an account is given of matters discussed by the Clinical Medicine Board of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in the 1930s. This Board consisted of the senior physicians in the hospital and the records give an indication of the excessively large number of students who were all having their clinical experience in the wards of the one hospital. In addition to the University students there were others studying for the Triple Qualification of the Royal Colleges. The pressure of this teaching on staff and patients was considerable. It was decided to transfer some of the tuition to Craigleith Hospital which became the Western General. In 1939 the male house doctors were awaiting their call-up. The administrators had to consider arrangements for the continuation of teaching if bombing took place. In March 1941 the Polish Medical School was organised in Edinburgh
