In this research, the durability of skid resistance during the ice melting process with temperature increasing from −5 °C to 10 °C was characterized by means of a British Pendulum Skid Tester. Four types of pavement surfaces were prepared and tested. The difference between two antiskid layers prepared with bitumen emulsion was the aggregate. The detailed angularity and form 2D index of fine aggregates used for antiskid surfaces, characterized by means of the Aggregate Image Measure System (AIMS) with micro image analysis methods, were then correlated with British Pendulum Number (BPN) values. Results indicate that skid resistance has the lowest value during the ice-melting process. The investigated antiskid layers can increase the surface friction during icy seasons. In icy conditions, the skid resistance behavior first worsens until reaches the lowest value, and then increases gradually with increasing temperature. Results from ice-melting conditions on four investigated pavement surfaces give the same temperature range where there will be lowest skid resistance. That temperature range is from 3 °C to 5 °C. A thicker ice layer will result in a lower skid resistance property and smaller “lowest BPN”.

Potential Use

This paper is a review of the chemical and physical properties of coconut fiber in asphalt mixtures. Coconut fibers (CF) are natural fibers and also an agricultural waste, which is abundant after the extraction of juice and coconut fruit. Nowadays, CF has been studied for its potential use in the construction field to increase the strength of materials with its high tensile strength. Additionally, CF can also be one the materials in highway construction as it can improve the skid resistance of asphalt pavements. It was shown that CF treated with NaOH lowered the penetration value and increased the softening point of modified bitumen. Flow of bitumen also can be avoided at high mixing and compaction temperatures by adding 0.7% of CF.

Designing long-life pavements and pavement recycling with reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) are two important strategies for improving the sustainability of asphalt pavements. Epoxy asphalt, as a proven long-life pavement material, is attracting attention from the pavement community for its use in road pavements. The recyclability of epoxy asphalt mixtures, however, has never been studied and has now become one concern in promoting the use of epoxy asphalt in road pavements. This study attempts to explore the performance of hot mix asphalt (HMA) containing reclaimed epoxy asphalt materials. Reclaimed epoxy asphalt was fabricated in the laboratory and incorporated into regular asphalt mixtures at various contents. Specimens were prepared and tested for their performance in comparison with mixtures without RAP. It was found that replacing the coarse aggregates in HMA with epoxy RAP up to 80% did not negatively affect its Marshall stability, tensile strength, and moisture resistance. The plastic deformation at failure of HMA, however, may increase with the increase in epoxy RAP content. At the current stage, the results from this study do not provide evidence to invalidate the use of epoxy RAP in HMA, at least at a coarse aggregate replacement rate of less than 40%.

Polymer concrete (PC) overlays have proven to be a very effective method of extending the lives of bridge decks and improving skid resistance. Many states in the U.S have specifications and have used overlays on hundreds of bridge decks. Multiple-layer epoxy, epoxy and methacrylate slurry, and polyester premixed overlays have been widely used. One of the keys to successful performance is surface preparation. The very light weight, water tightness, good skid resistance, excellent bond to concrete, and excellent durability have made PC overlays a very sustainable solution for increasing the life of bridges and parking garages, But in recent years very thin overlays referred to as high-friction surface treatments (HFST) have been widely used to provide skid resistance for asphalt pavements in high accident zones, particularly on horizontal curves. Several state departments of transportation (DOTs) have reported very significant reductions in accidents after HFST have been applied. The total length of the application is often only a few hundred meters or less. The cost, when compared to other remedial measures, has been very competitive. The treatments are very similar to very thin slurry overlays. The purpose is not to structurally rehabilitate the pavement, but to provide increased skid resistance for safety. There is also an increased use of thin overlays to provide color for applications including pedestrian and bicycle lanes, bus lanes, entrance and exit ramps, cross walks, and rail road crossings. There are few standards in the U.S. for colors in various applications or for where color should be used. But these thin overlays provide high visibility, skid resistance, and long life. A discussion of these applications, materials and installation methods, and where available, costs, will be presented.
