The elastic-plastic delamination fracture in layered beams was studied theoretically. Two Four Point Bend (FPB) beam configurations (the Double Leg Four Point Bend (DLFPB) and the Single Leg Four Point Bend (SLFPB)) were analyzed. An elastic-plastic constitutive model with power law hardening was used in the analysis. Fracture behavior was studied by applying the J-integral approach. The analytical solutions of the J-integral were obtained at characteristic levels of the external load. The solutions obtained were verified by analyzing the strain energy release rate with taking into account the material non-linearity. The variation of J-integral value in a function of crack location along the beam dept was investigated. The effect of material non-linearity on the fracture was evaluated. The analysis revealed that the J-integral value decreased with increasing the lower crack arm thickness. It was also found that the material non-linearity has to be taken into account in fracture mechanics based safety design of structural members and components made of layered materials. The analytical solutions obtained are very useful for non-linear investigations, since the simple formulae derived capture the essentials of non-linear fracture in the layered beams under consideration.

On the basis of the successful results of our previous study on a J-integral approach to the creep crack propagation of steels, the applicability of the creep J-integral to the time dependent fatigue crack propagation in creep range was studied. A satisfactory correlation was obtained between crack propagation rate and creep J-integral, and the same correlation was found in creep crack propagation under constant load as well as two-step loading. It was also found that the cycle dependent fatigue crack propagation rate could be successfully correlated by the cyclic J-integral. The high crack propagation rate in large scale yielding fatigue may be in agreement with the straight line extrapolation on log-log plots of the linear elastic fatigue crack propagation rate versus cyclic J-integral data.

The objective was to quantify the variation of stress intensity factor to weld root flaw sizes in steel frame connections. Finite-element analyses were used to study fracture toughness in welded beam-column connections. Investigations of fracture behavior mainly focused on the standard pre-Northridge connection geometry. Finite element analysis was performed using the ANSYS computer program. Stress intensity factor was calculated through a J-integral approach. Results show that stress intensity factor is not uniform and is largest in the middle of beam flange. Stress intensity factor increases nearly linear with the increase of flaw size. Backing bars have little effect on weld fractures.

In this paper multiple fatigue cracks propagation are simulated in two-dimensional plates. Since re-meshing the cracked bodies in each increment of crack extension is a time-consuming and complicated procedure, numerical simulation of mixed-mode crack propagation with FEM is a difficulty. For this purpose, a FEM software is programmed and mesh refinement in each increment of crack is performed by Delaunay Refinement Algorithm. Using different refinement methods, complex boundaries such as multiple cracks and discontinuities which are closed together are easily refined by this algorithm. Crack propagation path is predicted using domain form of J-integral. Modified tensile stress (MTS) criterion is used to predict the crack propagation path in each increment. Different numerical examples illustrate the validation and reliability of present software.
