The problem of finite deflections of a nonlinearly elastic bar is investigated as an extension of the classical theory of the elastica to include material nonlinearities. A moment-curvature relation in the form of a hyperbolic tangent law is introduced to simulate that of a class of elastoplastic materials. The problem of finite deflections of a clamped-end bar subjected to an axial force is given special attention, and numerical solutions to the resulting system of nonlinear differential equations are obtained. Tables of results for various values of the parameters defining the material are provided and solutions are compared with those of the classical theory of the elastica.

ABSTRACTFor a deeper understanding of the creation of carbon films the hydrogen-free ion assisted evaporation (IAE) method with neon species was used. Variation of the ion parameters energy and ion to neutral arrival ratio, delivering the necessary energy for modification of the film growth, results in different microstructures investigated with EELS, HRTEM and TED as well as different microhardnesses measured by dynamical Vickers indentation. A possible film growth mechanism is proposed based on an ion etching of mainly sp2-bonded carbon surface atoms and on defect dominated structure modification below the surface depending on the ion energy

The variation of apparent hardness observed in previously reported Vickers indentation tests of metals is reexamined. Common deseriptions of the effect are shown to be inaccurate: the variation of apparent hardness is monotonic but not simple. The effect is consistent with varying size of a previously postulated “plastic hinge” at the perimeter of the indent. This complexity confers uncertainty on the estimation of characteristic macrohardness from small scale tests. Association of the indentation size effect with friction and with strain hardening is confirmed.
