Abstract The causes of plane crashes, stemming from the subcritical growth of fatigue cracks, are examined. It is found that the crashes occurred mainly because of the negligence of the defects arising in the course of secondary metalworking processes. It is shown that it is possible to prevent such damage, i.e. voids, wedge cracks, grain boundary cracks, adiabatic shear bands and flow localization, through the use of processing maps indicating the ranges in which the above defects arise and the ranges in which safe deformation mechanisms, such as deformation in dynamic recrystallization conditions, superplasticity, globularization and dynamic recovery, occur. Thanks to the use of such maps the processes can be optimized by selecting proper deformation rates and forming temperatures.

In this work, the resistance and deformation characteristics of a brittle material against rain erosion are examined by using the non-linear, explicit software LS-DYNA. The water jet with varying speeds impinges at 90° on silica float glass plates with different thicknesses. In the simulations, the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian method is used for modelling of the water. In order to analyse the deformations on the brittle material Johnson–Holmquist–Ceramics (JH-2) is used as the material model. Minimum plate thickness (for constant water jet speed) and maximum water speed (for constant plate thickness), which do not cause any damage to the target, are determined depending on the geometry, boundary conditions and assumed failure strain value for erosion. The results are compared with the water-hammer pressure.

In this study, isothermal compression tests of TB18 titanium alloy were conducted using a Gleeble 3800 thermomechanical simulator for temperatures ranging from 650 to 880 °C and strain rates ranging from 0.001 to 10 s−1, with a constant height reduction of 60%, to investigate the dynamic softening mechanisms and hot workability of TB18 alloy. The results showed that the flow stress significantly decreased with an increasing deformation temperature and decreasing strain rate, which was affected by the competition between work hardening and dynamic softening. The hyperbolic sine Arrhenius-type constitutive equation was established, and the deformation activation energy was calculated to be 303.91 kJ·mol−1 in the (α + β) phase zone and 212.813 kJ·mol−1 in the β phase zone. The processing map constructed at a true strain of 0.9 exhibited stability and instability regions under the tested deformation conditions. The microstructure characteristics demonstrated that in the stability region, the dominant restoration and flow-softening mechanisms were the dynamic recovery of β phase and dynamic globularization of α grains below transus temperature, as well as the dynamic recovery and continuous dynamic recrystallization of β grains above transus temperature. In the instability region, the dynamic softening mechanism was flow localization in the form of a shear band and a deformation band caused by adiabatic heating.

The current wind turbine leading-edge erosion research focuses on the end of the incubation period and breakthrough when analysing the erosion mechanism. This work presented here shows the benefits of splitting and describing leading-edge erosion progression into discrete stages. The five identified stages are: (1) an undamaged, as-new, sample; (2) between the undamaged sample and end of incubation; (3) the end of incubation period; (4) between the end of incubation and breakthrough, and (5) breakthrough. Mass loss, microscopy and X-ray computed tomography were investigated at each of the five stages. From this analysis, it was observed that notable changes were detected at Stages 2 and 4, which are not usually considered separately. The staged approach to rain erosion testing offers a more thorough understanding of how the coating system changes and ultimately fails due to rain droplet impacts. It is observed that during microscopy and X-ray computed tomography, changes unobservable to the naked eye can be tracked using the staged approach.

The hot deformation behaviors of a new Ti-6Al-2Nb-2Zr-0.4B titanium alloy in the strain rate range 0.01–10.0 s−1 and temperature range 850–1060 °C were evaluated using hot compressing testing on a Gleeble-3800 simulator at 60% of deformation degree. The flow stress characteristics of the alloy were analyzed according to the true stress–strain curve. The constitutive equation was established to describe the change of deformation temperature and flow stress with strain rate. The thermal deformation activation energy Q was equal to 551.7 kJ/mol. The constitutive equation was ε ˙=e54.41[sinh (0.01σ)]2.35exp(−551.7/RT). On the basis of the dynamic material model and the instability criterion, the processing maps were established at the strain of 0.5. The experimental results revealed that in the (α + β) region deformation, the power dissipation rate reached 53% in the range of 0.01–0.05 s−1 and temperature range of 920–980 °C, and the deformation mechanism was dynamic recovery. In the β region deformation, the power dissipation rate reached 48% in the range of 0.01–0.1 s−1 and temperature range of 1010–1040 °C, and the deformation mechanism involved dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization.

The hot deformation behavior and hot rolling based on the hot processing map of a nano-Y2O3 addition near-α titanium alloy were investigated. The isothermal compression tests were conducted at various deformation temperatures (950⁠–1070 °C) and strain rates (0.001–1 s−1), up to a true strain of 1.2. The flow stress was strongly dependent on deformation temperature and strain rate, decreasing with increased temperature and decreased strain rate. The average activation energy was 657.8 kJ/mol and 405.9 kJ/mol in (α + β) and β region, respectively. The high activation energy and peak stress were contributed to the Y2O3 particles and refractory elements comparing with other alloys and composites. The deformation mechanisms in the (α + β) region were dynamic recovery and spheroidization of α phase, while the β phase field was mainly controlled by the dynamic recrystallization and dynamic recovery of β grains. Moreover, the constitutive equation based on Norton–Hoff equation and hot processing map were also obtained. Through the optimal processing window determined by the hot processing map at true strains of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6, the alloy sheet with multi-pass hot rolling (1050 °C/0.03–1 s−1) was received directly from the as-cast alloy. The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the alloy sheet were 1168 MPa and 1091 MPa at room temperature, and 642 MPa and 535 MPa at 650 °C, respectively, which performs some advantages in current research.

On the basis of Taylor-Bishop-Hill’s theory, many previous theoretical investigations have predicted that, at high rolling reductions, most of orientations should rotate along theβfiber from {110}<112> to {123}<634> and finally into the {112}<111> stable end orientations. Although some exceptions exist, experimental observations have shown, on the other hand, that the maximum on the β fiber is located still at about {123}<634> even after 97 % cold rolling. In the present paper, high purity Al containing 50 ppm Cu was cold rolled up to 99.4 % reduction in thickness and examined whether {112}<111> stable end orientation could be achieved experimentally. It was found that, with increasing rolling reduction above 98 %, {110}<112> decreased, while orientations in the range between {123}<634> and {112}<111> increased, suggesting that crystal rotation along the βfiber from {110}<112> toward {123}<634> and {112}<111> in fact took place. At higher rolling reductions, however, further rotation of this peak toward {112}<111> was extremely sluggish, and even at the highest rolling reduction, it could not arrive at {112}<111>. Such discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental observations should be ascribed to the development of dislocation substructures, which were formed by concurrent work hardening and dynamic recovery. Since such development of dislocation substructures are not taken into account in Taylor-Bishop-Hill’s theory, it seems that they can not correctly predict the development of rolling textures at very high rolling reductions, i. e. stable end orientations. On annealing specimens rolled above 98 % reduction in thickness, cube textures were very weak, suggesting that cube bands were almost completely rotated into other orientations during cold rolling. {325}<496>, which lay at an intermediate position between {123}<634> and {112}<111> along theβfiber, developed strongly in the recrystallization textures.
