Abstract An analysis is presented for the action of individual tire tread elements on polished sections of pavement covered by thin fluid films. Tread element flexibility, wheel slip, and time-dependent loading are incorporated. The effect of the lateral expansion of tread elements on groove closure is also studied.

Background: The extrusion cooking is the most widely used process so the development and consumption of extruded snack products having health and nutritious benefits would help increase the health status of the population. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of storage days on physical, microbial activity and sensory characteristics of extruded snacks and kinetics of extruded snacks. Methods: Extruded snacks were produced by extrusion cooking at optimized conditions of temperature, moisture and screw speed of 110°C, 12% (db) and 200 rpm. The products were packed in lowdensity polyethylene (LDPE) and laminated pouches (LP) and were stored at an accelerated temperature condition of 40 ± 2°C. The storage stability in terms of quality parameters such as moisture, hardness, bulk density, color, lateral expansion, sensory characteristics and total plate count was investigated. Results: An increase (p≤0.05) in the value of moisture, bulk density, a*, and total plate count was observed during the storage period, whereas hardness, L*, b*, ΔE and sensory characteristics showed significant (p≤0.05) decreased order with storage period. No significant effect on the lateral expansion of the extruded product was observed. A significant decrease in total carbohydrate, fat and protein content was found during the storage period. The average sensory score and microbial analysis suggested that extruded snacks packed in LDPE pouches can only be acceptable up to the 60th day and extruded snacks packed in LP can be acceptable to more than 90th day. The kinetics of color and hardness suggest first order kinetics. Conclusion: Overall investigation suggested that extruded snacks were more stable in the LP as compared to LDPE pouches.

AbstractUltrastructural study of spermiogenesis and of the spermatozoon of Carmyerius endopapillatus has enabled to describe some characteristics of this digenea. The intercentriolar body situated between the two striated roots and the two centrioles, presents a symmetric organization. Both external bands of this intercentriolar body are made up of a row of granules. During spermiogenesis, a flagellar rotation of 90° is described. The old spermatid does not present external ornamentations. The spermatozoon is characterized, in its anterior region, by the presence of a lateral expansion exhibiting one spinelike body. In C. endopapillatus, external ornamentations are localized only at the level where the lateral expansion appears. The posterior extremity of spermatozoon exhibits a nucleus surrounded by a plasmic membrane lacking microtubules, but presenting a small lateral expansion. This is the first species of Gastrothylacidae family studied by transmission electron microscopy.

<p><strong>We present a statistical study on the early evolution of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), to better understand the effect of CME (over)- expansion and how it relates to the production of Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events. We study the kinematic CME characteristics in terms of their radial and lateral expansion, from their early evolution in the Sun’s atmosphere as observed in EUV imagers and coronagraphs. The data covers 72 CMEs that occurred in the time range of July 2010 to September 2012, where the twin STEREO spacecraft where in quasiquadrature </strong><strong>to the Sun-Earth line. From the STEREO point-of-view, the CMEs under study were observed close to the limb. We calculated the radial and lateral height (width) versus time profiles and derived the corresponding peak and mean velocities, accelerations, and angular expansion rates, with particular emphasis on the role of potential lateral overexpansion in the early CME evolution. We find high correlations between the radial and lateral CME velocities and accelerations. CMEs that are associated tend to be located at the high-value end of the distributions of velocities, widths, and expansion rates compared to nonSEP associated events.<br></strong></p>

Much of the basic information about individual organ development comes from studies using model species. Whereas conservation of gene regulatory networks across higher taxa supports generalizations made from a limited number of species, generality of mechanistic inferences remains to be tested in tissue culture systems. Here, using mammalian tooth explants cultured in isolation, we investigate self-regulation of patterning by comparing developing molars of the mouse, the model species of mammalian research, and the bank vole. A distinct patterning difference between the vole and the mouse molars is the alternate cusp offset present in the vole. Analyses of both species using 3D reconstructions of developing molars and jaws, computational modeling of cusp patterning, and tooth explants cultured with small braces show that correct cusp offset requires constraints on the lateral expansion of the developing tooth. Vole molars cultured without the braces lose their cusp offset, and mouse molars cultured with the braces develop a cusp offset. Our results suggest that cusp offset, which changes frequently in mammalian evolution, is more dependent on the 3D support of the developing jaw than other aspects of tooth shape. This jaw–tooth integration of a specific aspect of the tooth phenotype indicates that organs may outsource specific aspects of their morphology to be regulated by adjacent body parts or organs. Comparative studies of morphologically different species are needed to infer the principles of organogenesis.

Shaped film cooling holes are used as a cooling technology in gas turbines to reduce metal temperatures and improve durability, and they generally consist of a small metering section connected to a diffuser that expands in one or more directions. The area ratio of these holes is defined as the area at the exit of the diffuser, divided by the area at the metering section. A larger area ratio increases the diffusion of the coolant momentum, leading to lower average momentum of the coolant jet at the exit of the hole and generally better cooling performance. Cooling holes with larger area ratios are also more tolerant of high blowing ratio conditions, and the increased coolant diffusion typically better prevents jet liftoff from occurring. Higher area ratios have traditionally been accomplished by increasing the expansion angle of the diffuser while keeping the overall length of the hole constant. The present study maintains the diffuser expansion angles and instead increases the length of the diffuser, which results in longer holes. Various area ratios have been examined for two shaped holes: one with forward and lateral expansion angles of 7° (7-7-7 hole) and one with forward and lateral expansion angles of 12° (12-12-12 hole). Each hole shape was tested at numerous blowing ratios to capture trends across various flow rates. Adiabatic effectiveness measurements indicate that for the baseline 7-7-7 hole, a larger area ratio provides higher effectiveness, especially at higher blowing ratios. Measurements also indicate that for the 12-12-12 hole, a larger area ratio performs better at high blowing ratios but the hole experiences ingestion at low blowing ratios. Steady RANS simulations did not accurately predict the levels of adiabatic effectiveness, but did predict the trend of improving effectiveness with increasing area ratio for both hole shapes. Flowfield measurements with PIV were also performed at one downstream plane for a low and high area ratio case, and the results indicate an expected decrease in jet velocity due to a larger diffuser.
