Silicon tetrachloride, used in industry for the production of highest purity silicon and silica, is customarily manufactured from silica-sand and charcoal.SiCl4 can also be made from rice hulls, which contain up to 20 percent silica and only traces of other mineral matter. Hulls, after carbonization, actually prove superior as a starting material since they react at lower temperature. This use of rice hulls may offer a new, profitable solution for a rice mill byproduct disposal problem.In studies of the reaction kinetics with carbonized hulls, conversion of SiO2 to SiCl4 was found to proceed within a few minutes to a constant, limited yield which depended reproducibly on the ambient temperature of the reactor. See Fig. 1. This suggested that physical or chemical heterogeneity of the silica in the hull structure might be involved.

With the booming construction of sewage treatment plants aiming at environmental protection, China has to face an emerging urgent task to address the sludge treatment and disposal problem. However there is a big controversy in China about the sludge treatment and disposal strategies. Some scientists suggest incinerating, while others insist on landfilling. In this paper, from the perspective of sustainable development and cyclic economy, a detailed analysis of nutrients cycle mainly related to nitrogen and phosphate before and after industrialization was made and a view that sludge should go back to soils to re-establish a sound nutrients cycle was put forward. Then the feasibility for sludge recycle to soils was discussed and some land application methods for sludge were introduced. At last, a successful case of producing compounded fertilizer from dewatered sludge in Northeast China was described in detail.

Acid tar sludge (ATS) is a hazardous waste generated in steel plants as a process by-product. ATS disposal is a major challenge for the steel industry around the world and specifically for developing nations. Hazardous wastes are usually disposed of in a dedicated expensive thermal treatment plant as per existing rules. Due to inadequate capacity of treating the total amount of hazardous waste, study of other economical options are required. India generates over 7.2 million metric tonnes of hazardous waste annually as per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Government of India. Thus, co-processing of ATS in cement plant as an alternative means of disposal was studied based on a number of trials. During the five trials of 5 day each, feed rate of ATS was maintained at 0.4 tonne per hour (TPH) with an average coal feed rate of 10 TPH. No incremental variations in emissions were observed during the trials. The analysis further revealed insignificant impact on clinker quality, leach behaviour and cement property. The study also showed negligible impact on ambient air quality based on NO x, SO2, RSPM, SPM measurement at varying location around the cement plant. Thus, co-processing of hazardous waste such as ATS in cement plant can be an effective way to address the hazardous waste disposal problem in developing countries such as India.


The durability of non-natural-reusable polymers is less identified, and it is challenging to dispose. To increase the durability and solve the disposal problem, polymers are reinforced with fibers. In this study, the banana fiber is used to prepare a lightweight composite mixed with a polymer compound. The fiber is extracted from the bunch of banana by retting process. The fabrication was done by adding fiber and the polyester resin in the mould by varying the composition, and the length of the fiber was fixed as 40 mm. As per standard of ASTM, The impact, tensile and flexural strength tests were conducted for the fabricated composite. The result was compared with coconut fiber and polyester resin composite. The study shows that the fiber prepared with the banana bunch shows a remarkable increase in mechanical properties proves to be a light weight material because of its less dense of fiber as 581 kg/m3. Hence, for industrial applications, the composite made of banana fiber and polyester can be used.

ABSTRACTAn overview is given of an International Atomic Energy Agency Coordinated Research Project (CRP) on the treatment of irradiated graphite (i-graphite) to meet acceptance criteria for waste disposal. Graphite is a unique radioactive waste stream, with some quarter-million metric tons worldwide eventually needing to be disposed of. The CRP has involved 24 organizations from 10 Member States. Innovative and conventional methods for i-graphite characterization, retrieval, treatment and conditioning technologies have been explored in the course of this work, and offer a range of options for competent authorities in individual Member States to deploy according to local requirements and regulatory conditions.

The application of recycled clay brick can not only solve the disposal problem of demolished solid waste but also reduce ecological environment damage caused by the excessive development of resources. Clay brick powder (CBP) exhibits pozzolanic activity and can be used as cement replacement. Recycled clay brick aggregate (RBA) can be used to substitute natural coarse aggregate. Recycled clay brick aggregate concrete (RBAC) can attain suitable strength and be used in the production of medium- and low-strength concrete. Clay brick waste as potential partial cement and aggregate replacement material is reviewed herein. Performances in terms of mechanical and durability-related properties of mortar and concrete are discussed. Understanding the properties of clay bricks is crucial to further research and applications.
