Operations at former weapons processing facilities in the U. S. have resulted in a large volume of radionuclidecontaminated soils and residues. In an effort to improve remediation strategies and meet environmental regulations, radionuclide-bearing particles in contaminant soils from Fernald in Ohio and the Rocky Flats Plant (RFP) in Colorado have been characterized by electron microscopy. The object of these studies was to determine the form of the contaminant radionuclide, so that it properties could be established [1]. Physical separation and radiochemical analysis determined that uranium contamination at Fernald was not present exclusively in any one size/density fraction [2]. The uranium-contamination resulted from aqueous and solid product spills, air-borne dust particles, and from the operation of an incinerator on site. At RFP the contamination was from the incineration of Pu-bearing materials. Further analysis by x-ray absorption spectroscopy indicated that the majority of the uranium was in the 6+ oxidation state [3].

Potential relations of tribological characteristics of aluminum antifriction alloys with their compositions and mechanical properties were investigated. In this regard, the properties of eight aluminum alloys containing tin from 5.4% to 11% doped with lead, copper, silicon, zinc, magnesium, and titanium were studied. Mechanical properties such as hardness, strength, relative extension, and impact strength were analyzed. Within the tribological tests seizure load and wear of material were evaluated and secondary structures were studied afterwards. The absence of a definitive correlation between tribological behavior and mechanical properties was shown. It was determined that doping tin over 6% is excessive. The seizure load of the alloys increases with the magnesium content. Secondary structures of the alloys with higher wear rates contain one order less magnesium and tin.

AbstractFinding the statistical intensity signatures of the Earth’s magnetic field over geologic time has helped understanding of the evolution of the Earth’s interior and its interactions with other integral parts of Earth systems. However, this has been often hampered by a paucity of absolute paleointensity (API) data, which are difficult to obtain primarily because of non-ideal magnetic behaviors of natural materials. Here, we present new API determination data with paleodirectional and rock magnetic analyses from basaltic rocks probably aged ~ 4‒5 Ma in Baengnyeong Island, Korea. Paleodirectional analysis obtained an overall mean direction of D = 347.3° and I = 38.3° (α95 = 4.9°, k = 113.4) corresponding to a virtual geomagnetic pole at 342.1° E and 70.2° N. Comprehensive rock magnetic analyses identified Ti-poor titanomagnetite with, in part, multi-domain (MD) particles as a main carrier of remanent magnetization. The Tsunakawa–Shaw (TS) method yielded 12 qualified API estimates with a high success rate, efficiently removing possible MD influences, and resulted in a mean value of 13.1 μT with good precision (1.7 μT, standard deviation). The Thellier method of the IZZI protocol with pTRM checks, coupled with the use of a bootstrap approach instead of the “conventional best-fitting” in API determination, gave 6.6‒19.7 μT as a 95% confidence interval of its mean API estimate, which supports the reliability of our TS-derived API mean estimate; but it is not considered in the final mean value because of the relatively large uncertainty. The virtual dipole moment corresponding to the TS-derived API mean, 2.9 (± 0.4) × 1022 Am2, is somewhat lower than the expectations of the past few Myr averages. Combined with a global API database, our new data implies a larger dispersion in the dipole moment during the early Pliocene than previously inferred. This also suggests that the issue of whether the early Pliocene average dipole strength was moderately high (> 5 × 1022 Am2) or consistent (4‒5 × 1022 Am2) should be discussed further.

Low temperature degradation free Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) has been developed. It is reported that ZTA has higher mechanical strength compared to alumina due to the stress induced transformation and spontaneously transformation of zirconia phase on some ZTA have been occurred. For achieving the higher reliability of artificial joint prosthesis alternative to alumina and other ceramic materials, it is necessary to improve and validate the both mechanical characteristics and phase stability at the same time. We evaluated that microstructure, mechanical characteristics and phase stability of newly developed ZTA (BIOCERAM®AZUL). It was confirmed that four-point bending strength and weibull modulus were extreamly high, and ZTA has higher reliability. There were no significant changes and deterioration in four-point bending strength, crystal structure and wear property with and without accelerated aging test. Newly developed ZTA not only with high mechanical characteristics but also with phase stability could be quite useful as bearing materials in artificial joints for longer clinical use.

ISO/TC206 'Fine ceramics' is one of a technical committee (TC) in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), established in 1992. The first plenary meeting for this TC was held in 1994, and the latest meeting was held in August 2015, in Jeju, Republic of Korea. The scope of this TC covers very wide field concerning the ceramic materials for industrial applications, in forms of powders, monoliths, coatings and composites, and in functions of mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical, magnetic, optical and their combinations. This TC consists of 18 participating member (P-member) countries and 13 observing member (O-member) countries. We already have 81 published standards from this TC. About 30 new work items are under discussion, about 15 items are waiting for starting the discussion, and about 10 items are in the process for revision of the published standards. In this TC, we have 12 working groups. More than twenty years have passed since starting this TC, generally speaking, the categories of the discussed items tends to shift, from some testing methods for fundamental properties (strength, density, thermal properties etc.), to some properties for specified applications, such as ceramic bearing materials, photocatalytic materials and electrical applications.

Abstract:Dealing with thallium-bearing materials by vacuum distillation under the condition of 400~700°Cand 10-60 Pa.Measured contents of Cd,Tl and Pb under these temperatures.Analzed relations between evaporation rate,residue duty of Cd with temperatures, and The relyations that between evaporation rate,evaporative duty of Tl and Pb with temperatures.Least square method is used to fit the relations and got that the most suitable temperature for evaporating Cd is 560°C;Analyzed the relations between the activity coefficients ratio of Cd-Tl system and Cd-Pb system and temperatures as well as mole fractions,also got fitted equations of them;Analyzed the relation between gas-liquid cotents of Cd-Tl,Cd-Pb systems and temperatures.It is valuable for extracting Tl,Pb with vacuum distillation.

Rolling-contact fatigue test methods were used to measure the wear performance of several silicon nitride materials. Sintered, hot pressed and hot isostatically pressed materials exhibited wear rates ranging over three orders of magnitude. Hot isostatically pressed materials had the lowest wear rates. Despite the disparity in wear performance, all materials tested had useful rolling-contact fatigue lives compared to steel. Fatigue life estimates, failure modes, and rolling wear performance for theses ceramics are compared to M-50 steel. This work highlights the rapid contact stress reductions that occur due to conformal wear in rolling-contact fatigue testing. Candidate bearing materials with unacceptably high wear rates may exhibit useful fatigue lives. Rolling contact bearing materials must possess useful wear and fatigue resistance. Proper performance screening of candidate bearing materials must describe the failure mode, wear rate, and the fatigue life. Guidelines for fatigue testing methods are proposed.
