The cross section for that photoneutron reaction in 16O which leaves 15O in its ground state has been measured for photon energies ranging from 17 to 30 MeV, i.e. at energies corresponding to giant resonance excitations in 16O. Time-of-flight methods, yielding resolutions equal to 100 keV at a neutron energy of 6 MeV, were used to measure neutron spectra emitted at an angle of 98° when targets of ordinary and heavy water were irradiated with pulsed bremsstrahlung. The differential cross section at 22.3 MeV excitation was found to be 1.00 ±.05 mb/sr, assuming a photodisintegration cross section at 98° equal to 55.3 μb/sr (laboratory system) for deuterium, this latter value having been derived from calculations which have been substantiated experimentally to within ± 10%. The results are discussed with reference to other photodisintegration experiments and to recent theoretical work.

A lithium-drift germanium γ-ray spectrometer has been used to make accurate intercomparisons of the ratio of resonance-integral to thermal-activation cross section by measuring cadmium ratios or relative activation rates in two different neutron spectra. The standard, gold, or secondary standard, indium, was mixed uniformly in the samples and the activities resolved with the spectrometer. Expressed as Westcott s0 values, the results relative to s0 = 17.7 for gold were as follows: 74Se = 10.3 ± 0.1, 78Se = 12.3 ± 0.3, 80Se = 2.65 ± 0.02, 81Br = 24.3 ± 0.5, 127I = 27.8 ± 0.5, 130Te = 2.10 ± 0.07, 138Ba = 0.649 ± 0.004, 140Ce = 0.476 ± 0.003, 142Ce = 0.865 ± 0.005.

The leakage neutron spectra measurements have been done on benchmark spherical assemblies with Cf-252 source in center of 1) heavy water sphere with diameter of 30 cm (with Cd cover) and of 2) iron spheres with diameter of 100 cm and 50 cm. It has been stated for years that transport calculations by iron overestimate measured spectra in energy region around 300 keV by about 20-40 % (calculation to measurement ratio C/E = 1.2-1.4). The influence of an artificial changes in cross-section XS-Fe-56 (n,elastic)designed by IAEA, Nuclear Data Section, has been studied on the iron spheres. Influence of those XS-corrections to calculated neutron spectrum is presented.

With increasing needs of neutron detection in energy and homeland security sectors, there is an aim in the development of new suitable detection materials with possible n/g separation and also satisfactory resolution. This issue is connected with a well-defined neutron field. The neutron standards 252Cf(spontaneous fission) and 235U(nth fission) have smooth spectra; thus, the tests in these fields can be used for testing of neutron gamma pulse shape discrimination (PSD), but cannot reveal possible problems in the deconvolution. New neutron field which is formed from fission spectrum filtered by 1 m thick silicon block was developed in Research Center Rez. Due to the course of the silicon cross section, the well-distinguished neutron peaks occur in filtered neutron spectrum. In this field, various scintillation materials, HIDEX Aqualight, and EJ299-33A were tested.

The Maxwellian averaged cross section (MACS) for 197Au(n,γ) is used in neutron capture cross section measurements as a reference for reactions important for astrophysics, reactor and dosimetry applications. The traditionally adopted value for this reference cross section, in the energy range relevant for astrophysical (3 < E n < 200 keV), was obtained by Ratynski and Käppeler in 1988. However, the MACS calculated using the 2006 standards evaluation is approximately 6 % above the Ratynski and Käppeler (R&K) evaluation. Because of this discrepancy new experiments and reanalyses were done in an attempt to resolve the problem. In 2011 we started as well a series of integral experiments (activation) for determining the MACS-30 (kT=30 keV) of Au with two different Maxwellian neutron spectra: i) QMNS-25 (as R&K) and ii) MNS-30 (new method). Our results agree with those obtained with the standard evaluation. At present (2018), the updated MACS-30 has been included as standard. Here we present the results of our measurements and the reasons for the lower value of the R&K measurement.
