Effects of strain amplitude and loading path on cyclic deformation behavior and martensitic transformation of 304 stainless steel were experimentally investigated at room temperature. Series of symmetrical strain-control low cycle fatigue tests with strain amplitude ranging from 0.4% to 1.0% and various loading paths (uniaxial, torsional, proportional, rhombus, square and circular) with the same equivalent strain amplitude of 0.5% were carried out. Three-stage cyclic deformation behavior containing initial hardening, cyclic softening or saturation, and secondary hardening as well as near-linear relationship between α’-martensite content and number of cycles was observed during the whole life regime as for each test. Besides, a nearly linear relation between peak stress and α’-martensite content was found during secondary hardening stage. Furthermore, higher strain amplitude or non-proportionality of loading path resulted in higher cyclic stress response and α’-martensite content growth rate, defined by the slope of curves of α’-martensite content versus number of cycles.

The Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) is an essential component, which is liable to limit the lifetime duration of PWR plants. The assessment of defects in RPV subjected to pressurized thermal shock (PTS) transients made at an European level generally does not necessarily consider the beneficial effect of the load history (Warm Pre-stress, WPS). The SMILE project — Structural Margin Improvements in aged embrittled RPV with Load history Effects — aims to give sufficient elements to demonstrate, to model and to validate the beneficial WPS effect. It also aims to harmonize the different approaches in the national codes and standards regarding the inclusion of the WPS effect in a RPV structural integrity assessment. The project includes significant experimental work on WPS type experiments with C(T) specimens and a PTS type transient experiment on a large component. This paper deals with the results of the PTS type transient experiment on a component-like specimen subjected to WPS- loading, the so called Validation Test, carried out within the framework of work package WP4. The test specimen consists of a cylindrical thick walled specimen with a thickness of 40mm and an outer diameter of 160mm, provided with an internal fully circumferential crack with a depth of about 15mm. The specified load path type is Load-Cool-Unload-Fracture (LCUF). No crack initiation occurred during cooling (thermal shock loading) although the loading path crossed the fracture toughness curve in the transition region. The benefit of the WPS-effect by final reloading up to fracture in the lower shelf region, was shown clearly. The corresponding fracture load during reloading in the lower shelf region was significantly higher than the crack initiation values of the original material in the lower shelf region. The post test fractographic evaluation showed that the fracture mode was predominantly cleavage fracture also with some secondary cracks emanating from major crack.

The effects of loading path and strain amplitude ratio on the cyclic behavior and fatigue life were investigated on a 316LN nuclear grade stainless steel employing a series of symmetrically strain-controlled fatigue tests at room temperature. The loading paths of Uniaxial, Torsional, Proportional, Rhombic, Rectangular, and Circular were employed with the constant equivalent strain amplitude of 0.5%. The strain amplitude ratio of 2.35, 1.73 and 1.27, defined by the ratio of shear strain amplitude to the axial strain amplitude, was realized by changing the shear strain amplitude under Proportional, Rhombic, Rectangular and Elliptical loading paths. As expected, the significant non-proportional additional hardening was observed. It’s interesting to note that the axial cyclic stress response varied with the strain amplitude ratio, and the law was different under different loading paths. The fatigue life of all the tests were evaluated by three critical plane criteria proposed by Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT), Fatemi-Socie (FS) and Chen-Xu-Huang (CXH). Results show that the SWT criterion significantly overestimated the fatigue life of non-proportional loading because the effect of shear damage was not considered. The CXH criterion for tensile-type failure yielded good prediction results except for two torsional data points. The FS criterion provided better predictions than other models.

Application of the Strip Yield Model to Crack Growth Predictions for Structural SteelA strip yield model implementation by the present authors is applied to predict fatigue crack growth observed in structural steel specimens under various constant and variable amplitude loading conditions. Attention is paid to the model calibration using the constraint factors in view of the dependence of both the crack closure mechanism and the material stress-strain response on the load history. Prediction capabilities of the model are considered in the context of the incompatibility between the crack growth resistance for constant and variable amplitude loading.

Experiments on U75V rail steel were carried out to investigate the cyclic feature, ratcheting behavior and low-cycle fatigue under both strain- and stress-controlled loadings at room temperature. It was found that U75V rail steel shows strain amplitude dependent cyclic softening feature, i.e., the responded stress amplitude under strain-controlled decreases with the increasing number of cycles and reaches a stable value after about 20th cycle. Ratcheting strain increases with an increasing stress amplitude and mean stress, except for stress ratio, and the ratcheting strain in failure also increases with an increasing stress amplitude, mean stress and stress ratio. The low-cycle fatigue lives under cyclic straining decrease linearly with an increasing strain amplitude, the fatigue lives under cyclic stressing decrease with an increasing mean stress except for zero mean stress, and decrease with an increasing stress amplitude. Ratcheting behavior with a high mean stress reduces fatigue life of rail steel by comparing fatigue lives under stress cycling with those under strain cycling. Research findings are helpful to evaluate fatigue life of U75V rail steel in the railways with passenger and freight traffic.
