Bearings are manufactured in a wide variety of types and sizes especially with a single row of rollers, two rows of rollers or more, with cages or roller beside roller. Researches carried out by authors in this paper have followed a comparative analysis between a standard cylindrical roller bearings design and a prototype design using finite element method software's like ANSYS and MESYS. ANSYS is commonly used and enjoyed by an extended use in the structural areas, for analysis. ANSYS it consists of three main phases: Pre-processing, conducting or importing of the solid model system that are to be analyzed, solid meshing design in finite elements, implementation of conditions and loads at the limit, Processing, numeric solving of the characteristic equations behavior of the system and getting the solution, Post-processing, viewing the results in order to analyses system reaction and identification of areas with critical applications. The purpose of the study was to collect data's using two different software's and after to compare them with mathematical results. Using the ANSYS in this purpose it was able to analyses the design of the structure of the cylindrical roller bearing in detail.

Abstract Single row, angular contact, spherical roller bearings were designed, analyzed, and tested to study their feasibility in a high speed (1.15 million DN) spiral bevel input pinion application. A mathematical formulation, modeling the mechanics of internal motions, load and stress distributions, lubricant flow, sliding friction, heat generation and heat transfer, was developed to analyze the bearing performance and predict operating characteristics. An interactive computer program, capable of running on a DOS PC, was then developed to solve the bearing model for the given parameters of geometry, materials, loads, and speed. The computer program, named SASHBEAN (Sikorsky Aircraft Spherical Roller High Speed Bearing ANalysis), also provided the capability of “lumped capacity” thermal analyses of the bearing and its supporting mechanical system. Six test bearings, conforming to a 216 cylindrical roller bearing OD (140 mm) and ID (80mm), were manufactured using Carpenter Pyrowear® Alloy 53 steel rings. Both conventional (with steel rollers) and hybrid (with silicon nitride rollers) configurations were built and tested under different setup conditions of loads (radial and axial), speed, and lubrication. Excellent correlation was found between the full scale test data and the computer analyses results. The analysis also provides an excellent comparison of the performance characteristics of an hybrid bearing with those of an “all steel” bearing for this high speed transmission application.

A calculating model for roller-pocket rotation and mechanics analysis is established to investigate the hydrodynamic lubrication between rollers and straight-sided cage pockets in a cylindrical roller bearing. An algorithm for calculating roller-pocket oil film pressure and film thickness is developed. Hydrodynamic lubrication simulation of the roller-pocket clearances is carried out. Effects of inner ring rotation speed, cage angular acceleration, roller profile and cage geometry on roller-pocket oil film performance are numerically studied. Some regular curves and conclusions are obtained and analyzed.

Equations and their derivations for finding the radial and axial stiffnesses of a single-row tapered roller bearing, assuming a rigid shaft and housing, are given for any case of combined radial and axial loads. This method is extended to include the two-row bearing under certain conditions. Also presented are tables to facilitate these calculations.

In order to accurately measure and evaluate the quality of the roller profile of the ultra-long flexible blade bearing, an error evaluation model is established for the arc segment and the straight segment of the roller based on the least square method, and then an overall quality evaluation model is proposed based on these two error models. Through the simulation of a standard wind turbine cylindrical roller bearing, it is found that the quality evaluation model established in this work can effectively measure and evaluate the contour line of the wind turbine bearing’s roller. The overall absolute error is 0.0319 mm, which is consistent with the set random error. The overall quality evaluation model is also valid for other types of bearings commonly used in the wind turbine, which include arc and straight segments, and can be used to evaluate the error quality of the roller profile of wind turbine bearings.

This paper developed a coupled model, incorporating the quasistatic model, fatigue life model, and mixed lubrication model, to investigate the effect of misalignment angle on high-speed cylindrical roller bearings. The model is verified by comparing with the published literature results. Then, a parametric analysis is carried out. The results show that as the misalignment increases, the load distribution is basically unchanged, but the fatigue life of the roller bearing decreases due to the variation of contact pressure, and the skewing moment of single roller contact pair increases. Furthermore, the optimal design of roller profile needs to consider the effect of lubrication in order to improve the fatigue life of roller bearings. In general, the optimal crown drop is too small according to the design from the slicing technique.

Double-row tapered roller bearing 353112 is used in trucks, and the external load and pressure distribution of the bearing are calculated combining with the specific operating conditions. Tapered roller bearings typically employ roller profile modification to equalize the load distribution, minimizing the stress concentration at the roller ends. Doing FEA (finite element analysis) on the contact stress with the changing roller crowning between roller and races, the appropriate roller profile and the crown drop of roller can be achieved. Finally the best control equation of roller crowning is obtained. It has important guiding significance for the improvement of roller crowning design of truck hub bearings.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the film-forming capacity of logarithmic crowned roller for tapered roller bearing (TRB) and to design a tapered roller profile based on an elastohydrodynamic lubrication model. Design/methodology/approach A coupled model, incorporating a quasi-static model of TRBs and an elastohydrodynamic lubrication model was developed to investigate the load distribution of TRB and to evaluate the lubrication state of tapered roller/raceway contact. Findings The model is verified with published literature results. Parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the effect of crown drop on azimuthal load distribution of the roller, film thickness and pressure distribution in the contact area. The result shows that crown drop has little influence on the azimuthal load distribution; also, the film thickness and the pressure distribution are asymmetric. When the tapered roller is designed and manufactured, the crown drop of the small end should be larger than that in the large end. Originality/value Precise roller profile design is conducive to improve the fatigue life of TRBs. Currently, most crown design methods neglect the influence of lubrication, which can lead to a non-suitable roller profile. Therefore, the present work is undertaken to optimize roller profiles based on lubrication theory.
