ABSTRACTThe elevated temperature rheology of continuous SiC (Nicalon®) calcium aluminosilicate glass-ceramic matrix composites is evaluated in uniaxial compression creep experiments (-σ1 = 20-to-40 MPa; T = 1300–1320°C). The steady state strain rate is demonstrated.to be highly sensitive to the orientation of the reinforcement relative to the maximum compressional stress, with highest bulk specimen strain rates noted for conditions in vWhich the sliding between the fiber and the matrix is optimized as a kinetic flow response (i.e., a fiber orientation of approximately 40-50° from σ1). One further discovers that the temperature sensitivity (i.e., activation energy) of flow increases as the amount of interface flow/sliding increases. The experimental results suggest that the high-temperature, low-stress interface response in this composite system is related to the ductile flow of the “Planar” SiO2 reaction-layer interphase that exists (in addition to the well-recognized planar carbon interphase) in these materials. The results of these simple experiments are used to calibrate a microscale-to-macroscale rheologic model in which the fibermatrix interface is described by a viscous constitutive relationship.

Hostile Environments

A review of recent developments and state-of-the-art in research and understanding of damage and fatigue of ceramic matrix composites is presented. Both laminated as well as woven configurations are considered. The work on the effects of high temperature on fracture and fatigue of ceramic matrix composites is emphasized, because these materials are usually designed to operate in hostile environments. Based on a detailed discussion of the mechanisms of failure, the problems that have to be addressed for a successful implementation of ceramic matrix composites in design and practical operational structures are outlined. This review article includes 317 references.

This work reports on the characterization of ZrSiO4 particulate-reinforced Li2O-ZrO2-SiO2-Al2O3 (LZSA) glass-ceramic matrix composites. The typical physical/mechanical and chemical properties of the glass batches and the composites were measured. A composition with 60 wt.% ZrSiO4 was preliminarily selected because it demonstrated the highest values of bending strength (190 MPa) and deep abrasion resistance (51 mm³). To this same composition was given a 7 wt.% bentonite addition in order to obtain plasticity behavior suitable for extrusion. The sintered samples (1150 ºC for 10 min) presented a thermal linear shrinkage of 14% and bending strength values of 220 MPa.
