A series expansion and an approximation have been derived for the temperature in the general case of transient heat conduction in two thin layers between two semi-infinite media at different uniform initial temperatures. The temperature accuracy and thermal effusivity measurement accuracy have been mapped to establish a window of operation for direct thermal effusivity measurement by the modified transient plane source (MTPS) method. The presented temperature series enables quick thermal analysis of thermally thick and semithick samples without factory correction/calibration.

Metal hydrides are a promising material type for hydrogen storage in automotive applications, but thermal property data is needed to optimize the necessary heat exchangers. In the present work, the transient plane source method is integrated with a pressure vessel to measure these properties for metal hydride powder as a function of pressure during the hydrogenation process. The properties under investigation include effective thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, specific heat, and thermal contact resistance. The results of this work with oxidized Ti1.1CrMn powder provide effective thermal conductivity values similar to data reported in literature for other metal hydride materials. The experimental measurements are also well modeled by the Zehner-Bauer-Schlu˝nder interpretive model for packed beds as a function of gas pressure. Extending the test method and ZBS model to estimate the contact resistance provides values that were two orders of magnitude less than measurements previously reported for other hydride materials.

Based on the traditional theory of transient plane source for thermal conductivity measurement, this paper designed and developed a new pattern of heating and temperature sensing probe, presented the study of transient heat conduction of half-infinite plane while being heated, established a modified mathematical model of transient plane source method, and achieved the measurement of thermal conductivity of automotive interior material sample by the data processing method of mathematical iteration and liner regression using the modified transient plane source probe. According to the data of experiments, the instrument which this paper designed has a high precision of 5% and a wide range of 0.003-1W/(mK).This paper provides a practicable way for heat capacity determination of automotive interior materials.

Experimental analyses are performed to determine thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and volumetric specific heat with transient plane source method on hollow sphere structures. Single-sided testing is used on different samples and different surfaces. Results dependency on the surface is observed.
