Abstract Due to the development of global economy and increased geographical and occupational mobility, communication with people from multicultural backgrounds has become commonplace in many healthcare institutions. As the demographic profiles of both patients and medical personnel are increasingly varied, intercultural competence (IC) has become an integral component of English for Medical Purposes (EMP) training. However, are medical students generally familiar with the notion of intercultural competence? What intercultural aspects should they be aware of in order to practise effectively when they graduate? The aim of this article is to present medical students′ understanding of IC based on a survey conducted among undergraduate learners at the Medical University of Bialystok, Poland. The article begins with a discussion on intercultural competence in the context of health care. Following this, a discussion on why intercultural competence needs to be incorporated and used in Medical English programmes is presented.

BackgroundMedical students and other health care professionals have substantial knowledge of the benefits of regular physical activity. Furthermore, as they have an ethical obligation to prescribe suitable exercises, they can influence their patients' attitude toward physical activity and can become role models for their patients. Physical therapists, who are primary care practitioners, have great potential for promoting physical activity; however, their role is still underestimated by patients and health care professionals.ObjectiveThe objectives of this study were to evaluate physical activity level in students of the Medical University of Silesia in Poland and to focus on the role of physical therapist students in promoting physical activity.DesignThis was a cross-sectional study.MethodsThe final analysis included 300 students from the schools of physical therapy, midwifery, nursing, pharmacy, cosmetology, and medicine at the Medical University of Silesia. The short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to evaluate physical activity level.ResultsPhysical therapist students demonstrated the highest level of physical activity, with 46% demonstrating a high level of physical activity, 54% a moderate level of physical activity, and none a low level of physical activity. The largest group of students with a low level of physical activity comprised students from the school of medicine (26%).LimitationsThe number of respondents was relatively small. The main study limitations included its cross-sectional nature and the possibility of self-report biases. Further research is warranted to expand the study nationally and determine which factors influence physical activity.ConclusionsThere was a large group of medical students who, despite being aware of benefits of physical activity, did not meet the recommended level of physical activity. Physical therapist students are well trained and qualified to promote healthy habits and encourage individuals to undertake regular physical activity.

The article describes the studies of the syndrome of emotional burnout and anxiety of teachers and medical workers. The sample of the study consisted of 26 teachers of the Astrakhan State Medical University and 23 nursing staff of the “Medical-Sanitary Unit” health care institution (Astrakhan). The following psychodiagnostic techniques were used: 1) a technique for diagnosing the level of emotional burnout. (V.V. Boyko); 2) methodology "scale of anxiety" Ch.B. Spielberger (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, STAI) (in Russian adaptation by Yu.L. Khanin). Static data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U-test for independent samples, the Statistics 10.0 application package. The study found that educators are significantly more anxious than healthcare professionals. It was revealed that the teachers developed a syndrome of emotional burnout, the second stage of emotional burnout (the phase of resistance) was diagnosed for nurses. The following dominant symptoms were recorded in the "exhaustion" phase among teachers: "a symptom of emotional deficiency" and "a symptom of emotional detachment". The dominant symptoms of burnout in health care workers were: "inadequate selective emotional response" and "expansion of the sphere of saving emotions." The data obtained can be used by psychologists working in the health care and education systems when drawing up psychological support programs in order to improve the psychological health of teachers and medical personnel

The article is devoted to the study of the reasons for volunteering among students of a medical university during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the definition of some of its psychological aspects. This topic is currently very relevant, since now a pandemic of a new coronavirus infection continues in the world. Given the widespread shortage of medical personnel, volunteer assistance is becoming an extremely important aspect in the comprehensive process of providing comprehensive care to covid patients. Medical students in their volunteering activities most often find their «place» either in hospitals or in call centers. The objects of a 2-stage study, conducted in May – June 2020 and in December – January 2021, were 150 medical students, divided by 50 people into 3 groups, depending on the course of students (1–2, 3–4, 5–6). The main reasons that prompted medical students to volunteer were studied, as well as their changes in dynamics, from the «first wave» to the «second wave» of Covid-19. It was found that most of the future doctors were eager to help people and participate in the general fight against the new coronavirus infection. The next part of the study was to determine, using the Spielberg method, the levels of anxiety among students during the «first and second» waves. A certain dynamics of various levels of anxiety was revealed, which may indicate a kind of psychological adaptation. This work is of certain interest, both for practicing psychologists and for teachers of higher education.

Foreigners face certain barriers in accessing medical care, though international medical students are in many aspects privileged in this field. The aim of this study is to explore whether these students are facing problems in accessing healthcare. An original survey questionnaire was prepared and distributed online and on paper among students. In total 138 questionnaires were filled out. The results were analyzed using statistical methods. The main barriers faced by students are the lack of knowledge about the healthcare system and language problems. The study shows there is a need to start working on institutional solutions to provide information about access to healthcare and to overcome language barriers in healthcare institutions. * The article is part of a research project financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. / Pracę wykonano w ramach Projektu Badawczego, finansowanego ze środków dotacji celowej MNiSzW.

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Occupational exposure of health care workers and medical students increase their risk of acquiring HBV infection, and many authorities recommend vaccination. However, significant proportions of health care workers do not receive HBV immunization, and remain at increased risk to HBV infection. The present study was conducted on medical students to evaluate their knowledge regarding HBV and to know their vaccination status. Methods: This cross sectional, randomized, observational study was done at Nishtar medical university, Multan from November 2017 to July 2018. A pre-structured and tested questionnaire was given to 150 medical students from first year to final year. Out of these students 75 were males and 75 were females. The students were also interviewed about age, gender, year of study, screening before vaccination, history of vaccination, completion of all 3 doses and reasons for not getting vaccinated. Results: Out of 150 participants, 117 (78%) were vaccinated against HBV. In the vaccinated group, 90 (77%) completed all the three doses of their vaccination schedule and remaining 27 (23%) students were incompletely vaccinated. Rate of vaccine uptake was higher in females; 63 (84%) than in males: 53 (71%). Reasons of not being vaccinated were lack of knowledge about consequences (15.5%), casual behaviour (36%), not knowing from where to get vaccine (12%), fear of injection (10%), busy in studies (10%) and financial problems (8%). Prior screening was done in 74 (63%) students before the vaccination. Conclusions: Despite the availability and accessibility of a cost-effective hepatitis B vaccine since mid80's, the vaccination coverage among medical students is low. Health education needs to be improved in all medical students. The orientation and awareness programmes should be held to create awareness regarding HBV infection.
