Research on enhancement of GFRP-anchor’s torsional strength

AbstractThis article mainly aims at experiments to modify the matrix phase in glass fiber-reinforced plastics anchor (GFRP-anchor), trying to achieve the enhancement in the torsional performance of GFRP-anchor in order to expand its application field. The experiments were to add the mineral filling nano mullite powder and the toughening agent acrylic-polyurethane emulsion with different proportions into the matrix phase which experienced a vacuum-pumping process for the removal of bubble, while the same reinforced phase glass fiber was used by all the GFRP-anchor samples with the same forming process conditions. Torsion test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations were investigated, and the results revealed that adding nano mullite powder into the matrix phase as the mineral filling with the mass fraction ratio of 1.5%, the acrylic polyurethane emulsion as the toughening agent with 5%, as well as the vacuum-pumping process for the removal of bubble from the matrix phase, can greatly improve the torsional strength of the GFRP-anchor by 35%, 41%, and 51%, respectively.

AbstractThe radial infeed rotary swaging is widely used as a diameter reduction forming process of axisymmetric workpieces, improving the mechanical properties with excellent near net shape forming. In the present study, rotary swaging experiments with different parameter setups were performed on steel tubes and bars under different material states and several resulting property modifications were investigated such as stress-strain curve, hardness, fatigue strength and surface residual stresses. The results show a significant work hardening induced by the rotary swaging process and an improvement in the static and dynamic mechanical properties was observed. Furthermore, the hardness distribution was homogenous in the cross section of the rotary swaged workpieces. Moreover, depending on the process conditions, different residual stresses distribution were generated along the surface.

This study was aimed at understanding how the process conditions affected the dimensional stability of glass fiber reinforced PP by microcellular injection molding. A design of experiments (DOE) was performed and plane test specimens were produced for the shrinkage and warpage analysis. Injection molding trials were performed by systematically adjusting six process parameters (i.e., Injection speed, Injection pressure, Shot temperature, SCF level, Mold temperature, and Cooling time). By analyzing the statistically significant main and two-factor interaction effects, the results showed that the supercritical fluid (SCF) level and the injection speed affected the shrinkage and warpage of microcellular injection molded parts the most.

ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composites) has ultra-high toughness and can be used in the zone needing the ultra-high tensile strain and very high durability. In order to investigate the toughness of ECC, the normal fracture energy GFis calculated and compared with ordinary concrete. The influence of the matrix (fly ash, silicon fume), the fiber (glass fiber, steel fiber and PVA fiber) and the fiber volume ratio on the GFof ECC are analyzed. The research indicates that silicon fume and glass fiber, steel fiber are all not able to be used in ECC. But flash ash and PVA fiber are very suit for using in ECC, the toughness of ECC increases with the increase of their content.

Aluminium composites are in predominant use due to their lower weight and high strength among the MMC’s. Aluminium 6061 is selected as matrix and E-glass fiber is selected as reinforcement. Fabrication of composite is done by stir casting method. Each fabrication carries the E-glass reinforcement content varied from 2% to 10%. The present article attempts to evaluate the mechanical properties of E-glass fibre reinforced composite and study the effect of reinforcement on the matrix alloy through mechanical properties. When compared to ascast mechanical properties the UTS has increased from 74.28 N/sq mm to 146.8 N/sq mm for a composite at 6% E-glass. The hardness of as-cast has also increased from 22 RHB to 43 RHB at 6% E-glass and the wear of composite has exhibited a decreasing tend with increase in reinforcement content along the sliding distance. The results are analyzed in certain depth in the current paper. The mechanical properties of composites have improved with the increase in the weigh percentage of glass fiber in the aluminium matrix.

Filament winding is a composite material fabrication technique that is used to manufacture concentric hollow components. In this study Carbon/Epoxy composite drive shafts were fabricated using filament winding process with a fiber orientation of [852/±452/252]s. Carbon in the form of multifilament fibers of Tairyfil TC-33 having 3000 filaments/strand was used as reinforcement with low viscosity epoxy resin as the matrix material. The driveshaft is designed to be used in SAE Baja All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) that makes use of a fully floating axle in its rear wheel drive system. The torsional strength of the shaft was tested and compared to that of an OEM steel shaft that was previously used in the ATV. Results show that the composite shaft had 8.5% higher torsional strength in comparison to the OEM steel shaft and was also lighter by 60%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs were studied to investigate the probable failure mechanism. Delamination, matrix agglomeration, fiber pull-out and matrix cracking were the prominent failure mechanisms identified.

Fibers embedded in the matrix of another material are the best example of modern day composite materials. Hybrid Composites made out of an amalgamation of Natural Fibers such as banana, jute, and coir along with glass fiber embedded in polymers have potential applications in automotive, aircraft and marine industries for their unique characteristics like high specific strength, light weight, design flexibility, corrosion resistance, biodegradability and low cost. In this work, epoxy hybrid composites reinforced with glass fiber mats and banana, jute, coir fibers of random lengths between 10-25 mm are prepared by varying their compositions in terms of weight percentage. The composites are fabricated by hand lay-up process and cut into test specimens as per ASTM Standards. Their mechanical characteristics such as Tensile Strength, Flexural Strength, Impact Strength, Hardness, Density and Water Absorption Capacity are evaluated and analysed.

The flame retardant and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP), highly filled with aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) and toughened with ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and zinc neutralized sulfated EPDM ionomer (Zn-S-EPDM), were studied along with their morphology. The PP matrix when highly filled with Al(OH)3 particles can achieve an adequate level of flame retardancy, but there is a decrease in the mechanical properties because of inadequate adhesion between the Al(OH)3 particles and the PP matrix and the strong tendency of the filler to agglomerate. The rubber incorporated in the PP/Al(OH)3 composites has two roles: as compatibilizer and toughening agent. Although ordinary EPDM significantly improves the Izod impact strength of the composites, the tensile properties are much worse because of the weak interfacial adhesion between the modifier and the matrix. Using Zn-S-EPDM instead EPDM, the tensile properties are much improved with only a slight decrease in toughness, because of improvements in the interfacial adhesion between modifier and matrix. SEM micrographs show that the rubber phase is dispersed in the continuous PP matrix and that most Al(OH)3 particles are uniformly distributed in the rubbery phase. Larger, obviously rubbery, domains can be seen in the PP/EPDM/Al(OH)3 ternary composites. Much finer rubbery domains were found in the PP/Zn-S-EPDM/Al(OH)3 composites.

ABSTRACTWe prepared a series of (AgBiTe2)1−x(Ag2Te)x(0≤×≤1) composite materials by melt and cool down [1]. The Hall coefficient and the electrical conductivity were measured by the standard van der Pauw technique over the temperature range from 93K to 283K from which the Hall carrier mobility was calculated. Ag2Te had the highest mobility while the mobility of AgBiTe2was the lowest of all samples at 283K. However the mobility of the (AgBiTe2)0.125(Ag2Te)0.875composite material was higher than the motility of Ag2Te below 243K. It seems that a small second phase dispersed in the matrix phase is effective against the increased mobility.
