AbstractThe objective of the study was to examine the level of perceived stress among the final year students in the full-time Master’s programme at the Department of Physiotherapy of the University School of Physical Education in Wroclaw, and to identify the factors correlating with stress. The study involved 54 students. The participants were 23 to 28 years of age, 44 of them were women, and 10 men. The level of stress and related factors were evaluated using the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (KPS - Kwestionariusz Poczucia Stresu) created by Mieczysław Plopa and Ryszard Makarowski, and a short questionnaire prepared by the authors of the study, containing questions about the students’ age, gender, physical activity, financial situation, gainful employment, mode of studies, hometown, having a close friend or relative, plans for the future and satisfaction with the studies.Regular physical activity is a factor that positively affects the level of students’ perceived stress. A lower level of perceived stress was also associated with the respondents’ rating of their financial situation as good. The overall mean stress score obtained by the surveyed students is indicative of low stress severity. In the majority of cases, the respondents reported an average level of emotional strain and a low level of external and internal stress. The mean values of overall scores on the stress scale and its subscales were higher for women than for men. However, due to the size of the sample group, the differences cannot be seen as statistically significant.Regular physical activity and good financial situation impact on reducing the level of perceived stress.

In accordance with WHO’s motto: “my health in my hands”, contemporary approach to health issues concentrates on promoting active lifestyle of an individual. An individual’s lifestyle determines one’s health in 50—60%, (which makes it the most significant factor). Other determinants of an individual’s health – according to Marc Lalonde’s health fieldconcept – are: environment (21%), biomedical (16%), and healthcare services (10%). Physical activity is an essential element of healthy lifestyle. Polish society is characterized by a low level of physical activity. Therefore, it is necessary to take social and educational actions in order to shape attitudes, habits or skills within this range. Currently, particular expectations are directed towards physical education teachers, who are propagating health education in Polish schools. It is essential to instruct teachers, who should not only possess didactic skills, but also (or even primarily) — they should set an example by their own behaviour. Resulting from the above mentioned issue, the aimof this work was to characterize physical activity of female students at the University School of Physical Education in Poznań from the perspective of pro-health influence they might have as future PE teachers. The characteristics ofthe respondents are presented with reference to their place of residence and type of sports discipline they train. The research was based on the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). IPAQ is currently considered to be one of the best questionnaires used to analyse physical activity of people aged 15—69 years. For the analysis presented in this paper the shorter version of the questionnaire was used. It included seven questions concerning all types of physical activity (related to everyday life, work and leisure time). IPAQ is a method which makes use of metabolic equivalent — 1 MET. The research was carried on among female students of the full-time programme, specialization: physical education teacher. The calendar age of the students was 19.8 years. The results based on the analysis revealed that the examined students represented high and sufficient level of physical activity. Students training individual sports, as well as those living in cities with more than 100 000 inhabitants, reached higher values of MET coefficient than other respondentsKeywords: lifestyle, health behaviour, physical activity, IPAQ.

Abstract: This article analyzes the evolution of the syllabi in physical education and physical activity sciences at the University of León since its introduction in 1987. University students, as a result of their lifestyles, represent a section of the population that is most likely to adopt sedentary behaviours. The aim of the present study was to analyse the determining factors dictating the performance of physical activity as well as sedentary behaviour among university students. A total of 608 students (64.6% women) from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) were selected by stratified random sampling to take part in the study, which involved completing a questionnaire on lifestyle and physical activity. Of the participating students, 69.6% indicated that they performed physical activity; the main reasons given were to maintain fitness and for health, while a lack of time and laziness were the principal reasons given for abandoning or not taking up physical exercise. Significant associations were established between not doing physical activity and the time exposed to screens, time studying, feeling low and smoking; on the other hand, associations could be seen between doing physical activity and the participation of relatives (parents, mothers, partners, older siblings and friends) in physical activity, as well as a positive sense of satisfaction relating to physical education taught in schools. In conclusion, most of the university students did some physical activity, which was associated with less sedentary behaviour, while the influence of school physical education and of the habits of relatives played an important role.

Sedentary lifestyle and low physical activity are associated with health issues, including both physical and mental health, non-communicable diseases, overweight, obesity and reduced quality of life. This study investigated differences in physical activity and other individual factors among different occupational groups, highlighting the impact of sedentary behaviour on perceived stress by occupation. Cross-sectional study included 571 full-time workers of Kaunas city, Lithuania. The outcome of this study was assessment of perceived stress. Time spent sedentary per day, occupation and other individual characteristics were self-reported using questionnaires. Two main occupational groups were analysed: white-collar and blue-collar workers. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the impact of sedentary behaviour on perceived stress among different occupational groups. The prevalence of high sedentary behaviour was 21.7 and 16.8 % among white-collar and blue-collar workers, respectively. Blue-collar workers had a higher risk of high perceived stress (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.05–2.29) compared to white-collar workers; however, sedentary time did not have any impact on high perceived stress level. Meanwhile, white-collar male (OR 4.34, 95% CI 1.46–12.95) and white-collar female (OR 3.26, 95% CI 1.23–8.65) workers who spend more than three hours per day sedentary had a greater risk of high levels of perceived stress. These findings indicate sedentary behaviour effect on perceived stress among two occupational groups—white-collar and blue-collar workers—and other important factors associated with perceived stress.

Physical Education (PE) can foster regular physical activity (PA) in children. However, children engage in insufficient moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) during PE. This study objectively investigated MVPA of children during a single, compared with double PE-period. In 294 children (7.1 ± 0.7 years) PA was objectively assessed. PE periods were determined and PA was individually calculated. Children spent 8.5 ± 7.3 minutes of each 45 minutes PE lesson in MVPA. Boys were significantly more active than girls (p ≤ .01). All children participated in 135 minutes PE/week, 32.7% were scheduled one double and one single PE-period. Children, with a double PE-period and one single lesson engaged in significantly less MVPA than children, who had three single periods of PE (6.7 ± 6.9 minutes/45 minutes vs. 9.4 ± 7.4 minutes/45 minutes, respectively; p ≤ .01) In conclusion, single periods of PE seem to be more effective in getting primary school children to engage in more MVPA than one double period per week.

SUMMARYAims – The prevalence of overweight and obesity and the role of possible related factors were analysed among Italian early adolescents. Method – The survey reported here is part of the larger “Health Behaviour in School Aged Children” (HBSC) trans-national study, which is co-ordinated by the European Office of the World Health Organization. The data were gathered through self-administered questionnaires filled out by a representative sample of 4,386 (48.4% males) Italian students (11-, 13- and 15-year old). Results – The overall prevalence is 16.7% for overweight and 2.5% for obesity. Boys are more at risk than girls for the two phenomena. Moreover, age group, mother's education, area of residence, physical activity, and sedentary behaviour show a significant association with both outcomes. Conclusion – Findings of the present study are in agreement with similar studies carried out on early adolescents population, showing that prevalence in overweight and obesity decreases during this phase and is more diffused among boys than girls. The prevalence of both diseases is higher in the South and Islands. Sedentary behaviour and physical activity are substantive factors which preventive interventions could act on.Declaration of Interest: the HBSC study is partly funded by the University of Padova through a scholarship attributed to Dr. Alessio Vieno (Year 2001 – prot. CPDR013233).

The issue of spending free time in an educational environment in the health perspective is an important subject of interest for many researchers, including educators, psychologists, sociologists and doctors. This topic is particularly timely and important due to socio-cultural changes and disturbing data on public health from a global perspective, which results show that as many as 70 percent of students do not participate in regular physical activity (Haase et al., 2004; Gordon-Larsen et al 2004, Roberts et al. 2015). The aim of this article is to show how students spend their free time in the perspective of promoting healthy lifestyle of the University of Oxford
