AbstractAll technical systems have been designed to perform their intended tasks in a specific ambient. Some systems can perform their tasks in a variety of distinctive levels. A system that can have a finite number of performance rates is called a multi-state system. Generally multi-state system is consisted of components that they also can be multi-state. The performance rates of components constituting a system can also vary as a result of their deterioration or in consequence of variable environmental conditions. Components failures can lead to the degradation of the entire multi-state system performance. The performance rates of the components can range from perfect functioning up to complete failure. The quality of the system is completely determined by components. In this article, a possible state for the single component system, where component is subject to two stresses, is considered under stress-strength model which makes the component multi-state. The probabilities of component are studied when strength of the component is Erlang random variables and the stresses are independent exponential random variables. Also, the probabilities of component are considered when the stresses are dependent exponential random variables.

The vast majority of reliability analyses assume that components and system are in either of two states: functioning or failed. The present paper develops basic theory for the study of systems of components in which any of a finite number of states may occur, representing at one extreme perfect functioning and at the other extreme complete failure. We lay down axioms extending the standard notion of a coherent system to the new notion of a multistate coherent system. For such systems we obtain deterministic and probabilistic properties for system performance which are analogous to well-known results for coherent system reliability.

PurposeIn some environments, the failure rate of a system depends not only on time but also on the system condition, such as vibrational level, efficiency and the number of random shocks, each of which causes failure. In this situation, systems can keep working, though they fail gradually. So, the purpose of this paper is modeling multi-state system reliability analysis in capacitor bank under fatal and nonfatal shocks by a simulation approach.Design/methodology/approachIn some situations, there may be several levels of failure where the system performance diminishes gradually. However, if the level of failure is beyond a certain threshold, the system may stop working. Transition from one faulty stage to the next can lead the system to more rapid degradation. Thus, in failure analysis, the authors need to consider the transition rate from these stages in order to model the failure process.FindingsThis study aims to perform multi-state system reliability analysis in energy storage facilities of SAIPA Corporation. This is performed to extract a predictive model for failure behavior as well as to analyze the effect of shocks on deterioration. The results indicate that the reliability of the system improved by 6%.Originality/valueThe results of this study can provide more confidence for critical system designers who are engaged on the proper system performance beyond economic design.

We find the joint distribution of the lengths of the shortest paths from a specified node to all other nodes in a network in which the edge lengths are assumed to be independent heterogeneous exponential random variables. We also give an efficient way to simulate these lengths that requires only one generated exponential per node, as well as efficient procedures to use the simulated data to estimate quantities of the joint distribution.

Abstract Rule-based natural language generation denotes the process of converting a semantic input structure into a surface representation by means of a grammar. In the following, we assume that this grammar is handcrafted and not automatically created for instance by a deep neural network. Such a grammar might comprise of a large set of rules. A single error in these rules can already have a large impact on the quality of the generated sentences, potentially causing even a complete failure of the entire generation process. Searching for errors in these rules can be quite tedious and time-consuming due to potentially complex and recursive dependencies. This work proposes a statistical approach to recognizing errors and providing suggestions for correcting certain kinds of errors by cross-checking the grammar with the semantic input structure. The basic assumption is the correctness of the latter, which is usually a valid hypothesis due to the fact that these input structures are often automatically created. Our evaluation reveals that in many cases an automatic error detection and correction is indeed possible.

Abstract In the paper we present a novel construction of Marshall–Olkin (MO) multivariate exponential distributions of failure times as distributions of the first-passage times of the coordinates of multidimensional Lévy subordinator processes above independent unit-mean exponential random variables. A time-inhomogeneous version is also given that replaces Lévy subordinators with additive subordinators. An attractive feature of MO distributions for applications, such as to portfolio credit risk, is its singular component that yields positive probabilities of simultaneous defaults of multiple obligors, capturing the default clustering phenomenon. The drawback of the original MO fatal shock construction of MO distributions is that it requires one to simulate 2n-1 independent exponential random variables. In practice, the dimensionality is typically on the order of hundreds or thousands of obligors in a large credit portfolio, rendering the MO fatal shock construction infeasible to simulate. The subordinator construction reduces the problem of simulating a rich subclass of MO distributions to simulating an n-dimensional subordinator. When one works with the class of subordinators constructed from independent one-dimensional subordinators with known transition distributions, such as gamma and inverse Gaussian, or their Sato versions in the additive case, the simulation effort is linear in n. To illustrate, we present a simulation of 100,000 samples of a credit portfolio with 1,000 obligors that takes less than 18 seconds on a PC.

In modern conditions of rapid development of telecommunication technologies radio engineering means of different function are used everywhere in all spheres of ability to live of the person. Thus organizational-technical systems of civil appointment and power departments use the wide nomenclature of radio-electronic means of various classes with a wide spectrum of parameters, kinds of radiations and operating modes. In turn, it causes formation of difficult electromagnetic conditions in administrative-industrial regions and their near environment. The primary goal of services of radio control in these conditions is control over correctness of use by organizational-technical systems of the allocated resource of a radiofrequency spectrum and the parameters radiating of radio-electronic means. One of the main difficulties with which means of radio control in the course of the analysis of electromagnetic conditions in the set territorial area face a considerable quantity of radiating radio-electronic means with various parameters in a wide range of the relation a signal/noise, and also presence of stirring influence of any hindrances is. These factors make rigid demands to indicators of quality of functioning of panoramic detectors-direction finders which make a basis of mobile and stationary means of radio control. One of the basic indicators of quality of panoramic detectors-direction finders of means of radio control is range of detection of the radio-electronic means, defined by the set level of sensitivity and demanded values of probabilities of detection and a false alarm. Authors in article result results of working out of algorithm of increase of range of detection of signals by means of radio control on the basis of an estimated-correlation-compensatory way of measurement and indemnification of average capacity of additive hindrances in the reception channel. By results of the researches spent in article it is shown that: the increase in average capacity of cumulative external inadvertent and deliberate hindrances for the set typical initial data leads in VHF a range to reduction of range of detection of radio-electronic means not less, than in 1,4 times from the demanded; at demanded value of probability of detection, for example, and probabilities of a false alarm, at relative level of external set of a hindrance the panoramic detectors-direction finder of means of radio control with the realised procedure of measurement and indemnification of average value of capacity (dispersion) of inadvertent, deliberate hindrances and internal noise allows to lower the requirement to the threshold relation a signal/(noise) (on pressure) more, than in 1,3 times that will allow to approach value of range of detection to a reference value.
