Abstract Impedance spectroscopy measurements in various gas atmospheres were carried out in order to explain the doubts about the type of carriers and the mechanism of electrical conductivity in Bi-Si-O and Pb-Si-O glasses. In bismuth silicate glass, a typical ionic conductivity with oxygen ions as charge carriers was observed. The level of electrical conductivity of the glass at 400 °C was 5 × 10-8 S·cm-1, with the activation energy of 1.3 eV and was independent of measuring atmosphere. In the case of lead silicate glasses, the conductivity changed with measuring atmosphere. Two types of charge carriers: oxygen ions and proton ions were postulated. Proton conductivity measured in wet argon at temperature 400 °C was estimated at the level of 4 × 10-8 S·cm-1 while the oxygen ions conductivity in such conditions was 78 × 10-8 S·cm-1. We suggest that both types of charge carriers are transported along the same conduction paths using oxygen defects in the glass structure.

AbstractThe frequency (ν = 10^–1–107 Hz) dependences of electrical conductivity σ(ν) of single crystals of superionic conductor Pb_0.9Sc_0.1F_2.1 (10 mol % ScF_3) with fluorite type structure (CaF_2) in the temperature range 153–410 K have been investigated. The static bulk conductivity σ_ dc =1.5 × 10^–4 S/cm and average hopping frequency ν_ h = 1.5 × 10^7 Hz of charge carriers (mobile ions F^−) at room temperature (293 K) have been defined from the σ_ dc (ν) experimental curves. Enthalpies of thermoactivated processes of ionic conductivity σ_ dc ( T ) (Δ H _σ = 0.393 ± 0.005 eV) and dielectric relaxation ν_ h ( T ) (Δ H _h = 0.37 ± 0.03 eV) coincide within their errors. A crystal-physical model of fluorine-ion transport in a Pb_0.9Sc_0.1F_2.1 crystal lattice has been proposed. The characteristic parameters of charge carriers have been calculated: concentration n _mob = 2.0 × 10^21 cm^−3, the distance of the hopping d ≈ 0.5 nm and mobility μ_mob = 4.5 × 10^−7 cm^2/s V (293 K).

AbstractGlasses of B2O3-Na2O-Na2I2 have been prepared over a wide range of compositions on the basis of a fixed O/B ratio and a fixed Na/B ratio, respectively. Raman spectra and the ionic conductivity have been measured to elucidate the role of the iodide. In the fixed O/B ratio, a drastic increase of the conductivity with the addition of iodide is observed. The conductivity results are found to be consistent with the Raman results. In the fixed Na/B ratio, the substitution of iodide does not influence significantly the glass structure as well as the ionic conductivity.

Zinc bismuth silicate glasses with compositions 40SiO2·xZnO·(60-x)Bi2O3 (x=0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35, and 40) have been prepared by conventional melt-quench technique and the solubility limit of zinc in bismuth silicate glass system has been estimated using X-ray diffraction technique. Density has been measured using Archimedes' principle; with increase in ZnO in the samples, the molar volume and density are found to decrease. The glass transition temperature (Tg) has been determined by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and is observed to increase with increase in ZnO content. Raman and FTIR spectra have been recorded at room temperature and the analysis of Raman and FTIR shows that in all the glass compositions, asymmetric and symmetric stretched vibrations of Si–O bonds in SiO4 tetrahedral units exist and with decrease in Bi2O3, the contribution of symmetric vibrations begins to dominate which results in increased compactness of the glass structure.

BaxSr1−xTi1−yFeyO3−δ-based perovskite materials with different barium and iron contents are reported as triple conducting oxides (TCOs), which may conduct three charge carriers: oxygen ions, protons and electrons/holes.
