AbstractLet X be a completely regular Hausdorff space, E and F be Banach spaces. Let Cb(X, E) be the space of all E-valued bounded, continuous functions on X, equipped with the strict topology β. We develop the Riemman-Stieltjes-type Integral representation theory of (β, || · ||F) -continuous operators T : Cb(X, E) → F with respect to the representing Borel operator measures. For X being a k-space, we characterize strongly bounded (β, || · ||F)-continuous operators T : Cb(X, E) → F. As an application, we study (β, || · ||F)-continuous weakly compact and unconditionally converging operators T : Cb(X, E) → F. In particular, we establish the relationship between these operators and the corresponding Borel operator measures given by the Riesz representation theorem. We obtain that if X is a k-spaceand E is reflexive, then (Cb(X, E), β) has the V property of Pełczynski.

Some applications concerning the coincidence among these classes of operators are derived.

Let X be a completely regular space. We denote by Cb(X) the Banach space of all real-valued bounded continuous functions on X endowed with the supremum-norm.In this paper we prove some characterisations of weakly compact operators defined from Cb(X) into a Banach space E which are continuous with respect to fit, βt, βr and βσ introduced by Sentilles.We also prove that (Cb,(X), βi), i = t, τσ , has the Dunford-Pettis property.

Let X be a locally compact Hausdorff space, and let C*(X) denote the space of real-valued bounded continuous functions on X. An interesting and important property of the strict topology β on C*(X) was proved by Buck [2]: the dual space of (C*(X), β) has a natural representation as the space of bounded regular Borel measures on X.Now suppose that X is completely regular (all topological spaces are assumed to be Hausdorff in this paper). Again it seems natural to seek locally convex topologies on the space C*(X) whose dual spaces are (via the integration pairing) significant classes of measures.

Weakly compact and β0-continuous operators defined from Cb(X, E) into a Banach space F are represented by integrals with respect to L(E, F)-valued measures. The strict Dunford-Pettis and the Dunford-Pettis properties are established on (Cb(X, E), βi), where βi denotes one of the strict topologies β0, β or β1, when E is a Schur space; the same properties are established on (Cb(X, E), β0), when E is an AM-space or an AL-space.

The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between a certain isomorphism of some rings of functions on Riemann surfaces and a quasi-conformal mapping.It is well known that two compact Hausdorff spaces are topologically equivalent if and only if their rings of continuous functions are isomorphic. We shall establish an analougous result concerning a function ring on a Riemann surface and the quasi-conformal equivalence.

A problem which has generated considerable interest during the past couple of decades is that of characterizing abstractly systems of realvalued continuous functions with various algebraic or topological-algebraic structures. With few exceptions known characterizations are of systems of bounded continuous functions on compact or locally compact spaces. Only recently have characterizations been given of the systems C(X) of all realvalued continuous functions on an arbitrary completely regular space X (1). One of the main objects of this paper is to provide, by using certain special techniques, a characterization of C(X) for a particular class of (not necessarily compact) completely regular spaces.

The Koopman linearization of measure-preserving systems or topological dynamical systems on compact spaces has proven to be extremely useful. In this article, we look at dynamics given by continuous semiflows on completely regular spaces, which arise naturally from solutions of PDEs. We introduce Koopman semigroups for these semiflows on spaces of bounded continuous functions. As a first step we study their continuity properties as well as their infinitesimal generators. We then characterize them algebraically (via derivations) and lattice theoretically (via Kato’s equality). Finally, we demonstrate—using the example of attractors—how this Koopman approach can be used to examine properties of dynamical systems. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Semigroup applications everywhere’.
