AbstractLet f be a Hecke cusp form of weight k for the full modular group, and let {\{\lambda_{f}(n)\}_{n\geq 1}} be the sequence of its normalized Fourier coefficients. Motivated by the problem of the first sign change of {\lambda_{f}(n)}, we investigate the range of x (in terms of k) for which there are cancellations in the sum {S_{f}(x)=\sum_{n\leq x}\lambda_{f}(n)}. We first show that {S_{f}(x)=o(x\log x)} implies that {\lambda_{f}(n)<0} for some {n\leq x}. We also prove that {S_{f}(x)=o(x\log x)} in the range {\log x/\log\log k\to\infty} assuming the Riemann hypothesis for {L(s,f)}, and furthermore that this range is best possible unconditionally. More precisely, we establish the existence of many Hecke cusp forms f of large weight k, for which {S_{f}(x)\gg_{A}x\log x}, when {x=(\log k)^{A}}. Our results are {\mathrm{GL}_{2}} analogues of work of Granville and Soundararajan for character sums, and could also be generalized to other families of automorphic forms.

In this paper, we use the elementary methods and properties of classical Gauss sums to study the calculation problems of some mean values of character sums of special polynomials, and obtained several interesting calculation formulae for them. As an application, we give a criterion for determining that 2 is the cubic residue for any odd prime p.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to prove inequalities towards instances of the Bloch–Kato conjecture for Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight two, when the order of vanishing of the L-function at the central point is zero or one. We achieve this implementing an inductive Euler system argument which relies on explicit reciprocity laws for cohomology classes constructed using congruences of automorphic forms and special points on several Shimura curves.

AbstractIn a recent paper devoted to fault analysis of elliptic curve-based signature schemes, Takahashi et al. (TCHES 2018) described several attacks, one of which assumed an equidistribution property that can be informally stated as follows: given an elliptic curve E over 𝔽q in Weierstrass form and a large subgroup H ⊂ E(𝔽q) generated by G(xG, yG), the points in E(𝔽q) whose x-coordinates are obtained from xG by randomly flipping a fixed, sufficiently long substring of bits (and rejecting cases when the resulting value does not correspond to a point in E(𝔽q)) are close to uniformly distributed among the cosets modulo H. The goal of this note is to formally state, prove and quantify (a variant of) that property, and in particular establish sufficient bounds on the size of the subgroup and on the length of the substring of bits for it to hold. The proof relies on bounds for character sums on elliptic curves established by Kohel and Shparlinski (ANTS–IV).

AbstractLetGbe the simple algebraic group Sp(2,2), to be defined over ℚ. It is a non-quasi-split, ℚ-rank-two inner form of the split symplectic group Sp8of rank four. The cohomology of the space of automorphic forms onGhas a natural subspace, which is spanned by classes represented by residues and derivatives of cuspidal Eisenstein series. It is called Eisenstein cohomology. In this paper we give a detailed description of the Eisenstein cohomologyHqEis(G,E) ofGin the case of regular coefficientsE. It is spanned only by holomorphic Eisenstein series. For non-regular coefficientsEwe really have to detect the poles of our Eisenstein series. SinceGis not quasi-split, we are out of the scope of the so-called ‘Langlands–Shahidi method’ (cf. F. Shahidi,On certainL-functions, Amer. J. Math.103(1981), 297–355; F. Shahidi,On the Ramanujan conjecture and finiteness of poles for certainL-functions, Ann. of Math. (2)127(1988), 547–584). We apply recent results of Grbac in order to find the double poles of Eisenstein series attached to the minimal parabolicP0ofG. Having collected this information, we determine the square-integrable Eisenstein cohomology supported byP0with respect to arbitrary coefficients and prove a vanishing result. This will exemplify a general theorem we prove in this paper on the distribution of maximally residual Eisenstein cohomology classes.
