Phylogenetic analysis of partial rDNA sequences suggests that Ophiostoma should remain the sole genus of the Ophiostomataceae, and this should be the sole family within the Ophiostomatales, whereas Ceratocystis s.s. would be best disposed within the Microascales. Although morphological criteria suggest that the genus Ophiostoma is heterogeneous, analysis of partial small subunit rDNA sequence data shows that Ophiostoma (excluding O. roraimense) represents a monophyletic taxon. Analysis of a partial large subunit rDNA data set, which included sequences from 55 species assignable to Ophiostoma, failed to support the strict subdivision of the genus based on either ascospore characters or the nature of the anamorph. © 2018 Phycological Society of America Lake Baikal, the oldest lake in the world, is home to spectacular biodiversity and extraordinary levels of endemism. While many of the animal species flocks from Lake Baikal are famous examples of evolutionary radiations, the lake also includes a wide diversity of endemic algae that are not well investigated with regards to molecular-biological taxonomy and phylogeny. The endemic taxa of the green algal order Cladophorales show a range of divergent morphologies that led to their classification in four genera in two families. We sequenced partial large- and small-subunit rDNA as well as the internal transcribed spacer region of 14 of the 16 described endemic taxa to clarify their phylogenetic relationships. One endemic morphospecies, Cladophora kusnetzowii, was shown to be conspecific with the widespread Aegagropila linnaei. All other endemic morphospecies formed a monophyletic group nested within the genus Rhizoclonium (Cladophoraceae), a very surprising result, in stark contrast to their morphological affinities. The Baikal clade represents a species flock of closely related taxa with very low genetic differentiation. Some of the morphospecies were congruent with lineages recovered in the phylogenies, but due to the low phylogenetic signal in the rDNA sequences the relationships within the Baikal clade were not all well resolved. The Baikal clade appears to represent a recent radiation, based on the low molecular divergence within the group, and it is hypothesized that the large morphological variation results from diversification in sympatry from a common ancestor in Lake Baikal.

SUMMARYTwo morphologically novel Kudoa species are characterized from brain tissue of fish, Kudoa chaetodoni n. sp. from Chaetodon unimaculatus (Chaetodontidae) and Kudoa lethrini n. sp. from Gymnocranius audleyi and Lethrinus harak (Lethrinidae). Additionally we characterized a 5-spore valve (SV) Kudoa species from the brain of Sillago ciliata (Sillaginidae). Intriguingly, its 18S rDNA sequence was identical to that of the 7 SV Kudoa yasunagai extracted from the brain of a paralichthyid halibut in Japan. These 2 species may either prove to be con-specific, even though morphology and distribution differ, or demonstrate the limit of specific resolution in the small subunit rDNA gene region. Small subunit rDNA sequences from these new species were used in molecular phylogenetic analyses of kudoids to examine congruence of phylogeny with tissue tropism, geographical distribution, and host specificity. There was significant correlation between tissue tropism in the form of well-supported brain and heart-infecting clades. Host specificity and geographical distribution showed some correlations with genotype.

Nuclear small-subunit ribosomal DNA sequences were determined for 65 members of the Gigartinales and related orders. With representatives of 15 families of the Gigartinales sensu Kraft and Robins included for the first time, our alignment now includes members of all but two of the ca. 40 families. Our data continue to support ordinal status for the Plocamiales, to which we provisionally transfer the Pseudoanemoniaceae and Sarcodiaceae. The Halymeniales is retained at the ordinal level and consists of the Halymeniaceae (including the Corynomorphaceae), Sebdeniaceae, and Tsengiaceae. In the Halymeniaceae, Grateloupia intestinalis is only distantly related to the type species, Grateloupia filicina, but is closely affiliated with the genus Polyopes. The Nemastomatales is composed of the Nemastomataceae and Schizymeniaceae. The Acrosymphytaceae (now including Schimmelmannia, formerly of the Gloiosiphoniaceae) and the Calosipho niaceae (represented by Schmitzia) have unresolved affinities and are considered as incertae sedis among lineage 4 orders. We consider the Gigartinales sensu stricto to include 29 families, although many contain only one or a few genera and mergers will probably result following further investigation. Although the small-subunit ribosomal DNA was generally too conservative to resolve family relationships within the Gigartinales sensu stricto, a few key conclusions are supported. The Hypneaceae, questionably distinct from the Cystocloniaceae on anatomical grounds, is now subsumed into the latter family. As recently suggested, the Wurdemanniaceae should be incorporated into the Solieriaceae, but the latter should not be merged with the Areschougiaceae. The Corynocystaceae Kraft, fam. nov., is described and added to the Gigartinales sensu stricto.Key words: Corynocystaceae, Cryptonemiales, Florideophyceae, Gigartinales, Rhodymeniales, systematics.
