Background: This study intended to determine the colour distribution of the maxillary, central, lateral and canine teeth and to investigate the effect of age and gender on this colour distribution. Materials and methods : The colour measurements of the maxillary right central, lateral and canine teeth were carried out by the Vita Easyshade V (Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Sackingen, Germany) spectrophotometer on a total of 202 voluntarily patients including 89 (men) and 113 (women). The age distribution in the study was between 15 and 70 (the average was 31). Grey background colour was used in order to prevent the reflection of the background while performing the colour measurement with the Vita EasyShade V (Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Sackingen, Germay). Results: When comparing the L*, a* and b* values of the teeth with the gender; statistically significant difference was not fount between the gender and the L* and b* values (P>0,05) while statistically significant difference was observed between the gender and the a* value (P<0,05). Conclusions: The tooth colour distribution according to the Vitapan Classical; in the central and lateral teeth it was maximum A2, while it was found to be B3 in the canine teeth. The tooth colour distribution according to the VITA Toothguide 3D-MASTER colour scale; in the central teeth the 2M2 colour was measured most often, in the lateral teeth the 3M2 colour was detected the most often while in the canine teeth the 2M3 colour was measured the most often.

Nowadays, whitening of stained teeth has become the most popular topic in aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry. Because of the side effects of materials that were used for bleaching, in this study the effects of some plants which were used in Anatolian folk medicine on the treatment of tooth staining were examined. In this study, upper central incisors which were extracted for periodontal reasons were used. The colour values of numbered teeth were obtained and the teeth were immersed into three different essential oils of medicinal plants (Mentha piperita, Ocimum basilicum, Rosmarinus officinalis, Salvia officinalis) for different time periods (1 day, 1 week, 1 month). At the end of the immersion periods, colour measurements of all samples were made and the colour changes were analysed. Obtained data were statistically analysed by using ANOVA and Duncan test. As a result of the variance analysis, plant species and the duration of immersion was found to be statistically significant. Within the limits of this study, we can indicate that tested medicinal plants has a whitening effect by resulting significant change in tooth colour.

Colour is one of the most important appearance attributes in a variety of fields including both science and industry. The focus of this work is on cosmetics field and specifically on the performance of the human visual system on the selection of foundation makeup colour that best matches with the human skin colour. In many cases, colour evaluations tend to be subjective and vary from person to person thereby producing challenging problems to quantify colour for objective evaluations and measurements. Although many researches have been done on colour quantification in last few decades, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate objectively a consumer's visual system in skin colour matching through a psychophysical experiment under different illuminations exploiting spectral measurements. In this paper, the experiment setup is discussed and the results from the experiment are presented. The correlation between observers' skin colour evaluations by using PANTONE Skin Tone Guide samples and spectroradiometer is assessed. Moreover, inter and intra observer variability are considered and commented. The results reveal differences between nine ethnic groups, between two genders, and between the measurements under two illuminants (i.e.D65 and F (fluorescent)). The results further show that skin colour assessment was done better under D65 than under F illuminant. The human visual system was three times worse than instrument in colour matching in terms of colour difference between skin and PANTONE Skin Tone Guide samples. The observers tend to choose lighter, less reddish, and consequently paler colours as the best match to their skin colour. These results have practical applications. They can be used to design, for example, an application for foundation colour selection based on correlation between colour measurements and human visual system based subjective evaluations.

Some chromogenes derivatives of 4,4-diamino-stilbene-2,2-disulphonic acid were applied to cotton and wool and colour measurements in the CIELAB system were made. Colour differences were evaluated and some relationships between structure and colour were made. The effect on colour fastness caused by incorporating of different groups in the structure has been also investigated.

Successful results of textile materials finishing process in order to gain desired properties to the fabric according to customers’ demands mainly depend on properly-carried pre-treatment stages. The present study covers twill weave cotton/polyester fabric’s modification in alkaline medium at different temperatures and treatment durations through exhaustion (hot and cold treatment) and pad-steam process. An influence of the reduction agent addition was ascertained. Weight loss, water absorbency, vertical wicking, dye uptake, colour measurements, surface morphology and psysicomechanical characteristics were determined. Samples and recommendations of optimal alkaline treatment technologies are developed.

Introduction Studies on the ageing of bruises have been reported on Caucasians or individuals of fair ethnicity. This study focuses on bruise changes in dark-skinned individuals using tristimulus colorimetry for forensic analysis in such individuals. Methods Eighteen subjects of South Indian or Sri-Lankan ethnicity were recruited. Subjects were bruised using a vacuum pump and then daily colour measurements were taken of the bruise using a tristimulus colorimeter. The L* a* b* readings were recorded of a control area and of the bruise until it disappeared. Two Caucasians were used for comparison. Results This study showed that, using colorimetry, bruises on dark-skinned individuals can be measured and analysed even if the bruises are unclear visually. As the bruise is beneath the skin, the colour difference Δ L*, Δ a* and Δ b* were calculated. All values showed a trend, indicating that the L* a* b* measuring technique is a reliable method to analyse bruises on dark-skinned individuals. Comparisons of Asian subjects and Caucasian subjects were performed. The largest difference was seen in the b* value. Statistical analysis showed that Δ L* colour difference was the most consistent (95% CI −4.05 to −2.49) showing a significant difference between days 1–4 and 5–8. Conclusion Objective assessment of bruises on dark-skinned individuals using the L* a* b* method of measuring gave reproducible results. Furthermore, the study showed that the yellowing of a bruise cannot be seen or measured with a tristimulus colorimeter on dark-skinned individuals due to the pigmentation of the skin. With further studies and more subjects, the age of bruises could potentially be assessed for use in forensic analysis.

ABSTRACT Based on the colour measurements from a multiband, multicomponent 2D decompositions of S0 and spiral galaxies using SDSS images, we found that bars are bluer in S0 galaxies compared to the spiral galaxies. Most of the S0s in our sample have stellar masses ∼L* galaxies. The environment might have played an important role as most of the S0s with bluer bars are in the intermediate-density environment. The possibility of minor mergers and tidal interactions that occurs frequently in the intermediate-density environment might have caused either a bar to form and/or induce star formation in the barred region of S0 galaxies. The underlying discs show the usual behaviour being redder in S0s compared to spiral galaxies while the bulges are red and old for both S0 and spiral galaxies. The finding of bluer bars in S0 galaxies is a puzzling issue and poses an interesting question at numerical and theoretical studies most of which shows that the bars are long-lived structures with old stellar populations.
