In the actual context, eco-design that focuses on the integration of environmental considerations into product development becomes a major stake for many companies. In order to make things happen, eco-design tools have to be made available for the product designers and for the working situations in product development processes. The research in the field proposes a lot of tools without dealing with their proper integration into a given design process. To succeed in requires evaluating their contribution to the eco-design process performance. Therefore, the objective of the paper is to propose a performance evaluation models. It is based on the analysis of general studies on design performance and the adaptation of the GAMETH® framework. The performance model proposed consists in evaluating the knowledge used and produced for each activity of a given design process, according to seven criteria related to time, cost, quality and contribution to the design objectives. A study case illustrates how the propositions made here can be applied.

The present paper describes 1) the operation of a software tool for interface prototyping–RAPID–that is designed for software designers and human engineering specialists to use in support of design iteration and experimentation and 2) an application of this prototyping tool in the development of consumer products. RAPID simulates the appearance and function of small control panels including commonly-used displays and controls using the Smalltalk-80TM computing environment. The experience of using the design tool in a product development effort has provided a means of evaluating the success of this approach for supporting the product development cycle and improving the quality of the human-machine interface.

AbstractVarious tools for participatory design approach have been developed to support users to engage design process. Doll scenario is proposed as a generative tool for letting participants make and enact scenarios. However, suitable context to practice doll scenario is unclear in comparison with other tools using scenario. Therefore, our overall objective is to increase understanding of characteristics of making scenario in two different ways of expression; with doll and storyboard. We developed a doll scenario method, doll staging. The tool was evaluated in comparison to storyboard at a workshop which is a part of a new product development project in a corporate. The workshop was evaluated by semi-structured interviews with the participants and observations of the workshop and design outcome. The result suggests that doll staging allows participants to think from users’ perspective in developing new idea. These findings provides new direction to choose scenario based design tools according to objective or context of design project. We also discuss potentials and research directions to use tools for developing scenario in corporate contexts.

The widespread availability of affordable high-performance personal computers and commercial software has prompted the integration of structural analyses with numerical optimization, reducing the need for design iterations by human designers. Despite its acceptance as a design tool, however, structural optimization seems yet to gain mainstream popularity in industry. To remedy this situation, this paper reviews past literatures on structural optimization with emphasis on their relation to mechanical product development, and discusses open research issues that would further enhance the industry acceptance of structural optimization. The past literatures are categorized based on their major research focuses: geometry parameterization, approximation methods, optimization algorithms, and the integration with nonstructural issues. Open problems in each category and anticipated future trends briefly are discussed.
