In this paper, the author presents a theoretical framework that establishes an indirect link between IT capabilities and firm innovation by characterizing the mediating role of knowledge assets: knowledge networks and knowledge capabilities. Firm innovation itself is characterized as innovation development and innovation commercialization. The search on literature of IT capability and innovation revealed a very lukewarm recognition towards firm level variables in knowledge networks, knowledge capabilities, and distinction between innovation development and commercialization. Backed up by detailed reviews of literature on innovation, strategy, and entrepreneurship, the author posits propositions linking the aforementioned constructs, and proposes a framework for future research linking IT Capability with Firm Innovation.

We studied the formation of leaders' habitual behaviors and the impact of leaders' existing and potential capabilities on ambidextrous (i.e., exploitative and exploratory) innovation activities. Leadership habitual domain (LHD) theory was applied from an endogenous perspective to analyze the impact mechanism of LHD on ambidextrous innovation via the mediating role of dynamic capabilities. We used structural equation modeling to test data collected from 205 team leaders in East China. Results showed that LHD was positively associated with both exploitative and exploratory innovation, and that dynamic capabilities mediated these relationships. Thus, team leaders should renew, reconfigure, and expand their LHD by sensing and seizing opportunities when implementing ambidextrous innovation.

The purpose of the study is to contribute to the existing literature by reviewing empirical studies conducted in the restaurant industry on innovation to develop a dynamic capabilities-based research model for independent restaurants which can be tested by future scholars in the restaurants industry. The review covered innovation models that have been used and tested in restaurants; types of innovation; dynamic capabilities as an antecedent for innovation; the mediating role of human capital between dynamic capabilities and innovation; and the relationship between innovation and performance. The results of the study revealed that innovation activities described in the literature can be categorised into the dynamic capabilities components of sensing, learning, integrating, and co-ordinating capabilities thus supporting the proposed dynamic capabilities research model. The model, therefore, provides a comprehensive framework for investigating innovation activities in independent restaurants.

AbstractIn this study, we use unique purpose-built survey data to show that small food firms are more innovative when externally engaged. To capture this, we apply a broad classification of innovative activities, including new products, processes, markets, organization, and distribution channels, and examine them against types of external interactions. The analysis, an ordered logit estimation, controls for heterogeneity across firms as well as geographic conditions. The results demonstrate a positive relationship between external interaction and firm innovation, though there are differences across types of external engagement and innovation activities. Product innovation benefits from knowledge from extra-regional firms, while several of the other forms of innovation show a positive relationship with support from regional and municipality boards. Additionally, firm collaboration regarding transports and sales enhances most types of innovation, but there are few relationships of benefit with research-intensive organizations. We conclude that, to be effective, innovation strategies of both the firms themselves and policymakers need to consider local context, access to intra- and extra-regional knowledge sources, and what types of innovation activities the firms are engaged in.
