We analyse the transient behaviour of a fluid queue driven by a birth and death process (BDP) whose birth and death rates are suggested by a chain sequence. For the BDP suggested by a chain sequence, the stationary probabilities do not exist and hence the stationary buffer content distribution for fluid queues driven by such BDP does not exist. However, their transient distribution is obtained in a simple closed form by two different approaches: the first is the continued fraction approach and the second is an approach in terms of recurrence relation by an analysis similar to that of Sericola (1998). The probability for the buffer content to be empty at an arbitrary time is also studied. The variations in this performance measure are revealed in the form of graphs. Numerical illustrations are included.

Fluid queue driven by a birth and death process (BDP) with only one negative effective input rate has been considered in the literature. As an alternative, here we consider a fluid queue in which the input is characterized by a BDP with alternating positive and negative flow rates on a finite state space. Also, the BDP has two alternating arrival rates and two alternating service rates. Explicit expression for the distribution function of the buffer occupancy is obtained. The case where the state space is infinite is also discussed. Graphs are presented to visualize the buffer content distribution.

The Laplace transform of the extinction time is determined for a general birth and death process with arbitrary catastrophe rate and catastrophe size distribution. It is assumed only that the birth rates satisfyλ0= 0,λj> 0 for eachj> 0, and. Necessary and sufficient conditions for certain extinction of the population are derived. The results are applied to the linear birth and death process (λj=jλ, µj=jμ) with catastrophes of several different types.

The purpose of this note is two-fold. First, to introduce the mathematical reader to a group of problems in the study of language change which has received little attention from mathematicians and probabilists. Secondly, to introduce a birth and death process, arising naturally out of this group of problems, which has received little attention in the literature. This process can be solved using the standard methods and the solution is exhibited here.

Abstract. A cross-regional multi-site inventory system with independent Poisson demand and continuous review (S-1,S) policy, in which there is bidirectional transshipment between the locations at the same area, and unidirectional transshipment between the locations at the different area. According to the M/G/S/S queue theory, birth and death process model and approximate calculation policy, we established inventory models respectively for the loss sales case and backorder case, and designed corresponding procedures to solve them. Finally, we verify the effectiveness of proposed models and methods by means of a lot of contrast experiments.

This paper deals with the stationary analysis of a fluid queue driven by anM/M/1queueing model subject to Bernoulli-Schedule-Controlled Vacation and Vacation Interruption. The model under consideration can be viewed as a quasi-birth and death process. The governing system of differential difference equations is solved using matrix-geometric method in the Laplacian domain. The resulting solutions are then inverted to obtain an explicit expression for the joint steady state probabilities of the content of the buffer and the state of the background queueing model. Numerical illustrations are added to depict the convergence of the stationary buffer content distribution to one subject to suitable stability conditions.
