The field of tracking tourists’ mobility is a rapidly evolving space. In the eighteen months that it has taken to write this book, many innovations, along with world events such as COVID-19 have emerged, which have required updates to be made to this manuscript. There is no reason to believe that these changes will not continue to be necessary, as technological innovations are likely to occur at a rapid pace and will, no doubt, be utilised by those involved in tourism research. The purpose of this chapter is to attempt to investigate the future of the adaptations that are likely to occur with regards to tourist tracking technology and methods. A near-future gaze is taken as technology and world events are evolving so quickly that it is difficult to predict a future beyond the short term. Techniques such as physiological tracking, emergency management, indoor positioning, machine learning and artificial intelligence are assessed along with the future of ethical research conduct. A summary is also made where the pros and cons of each research method is assessed and finally, future research needs are highlighted.

AbstractRecent world events have forced Australia to re-examine its role on the world stage and its susceptibility to terrorist attacks. The authors examine the brief historical exposure of Australia to the phenomenon of terrorism, and review the geopolitical climate and features that may render it more susceptible to attack in the future. Australia's emergency management structure is outlined, and its current state of medical preparedness for a terrorist incident is critically reviewed.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant economic and social impacts worldwide and revealed the importance and urgency of urban resilience enhancement. To learn the lessons from this pandemic, this study undertook a case study in Wuhan City, which was the first city in China where the outbreak was declared, and analyzed the process of its response to the pandemic. Based on the theory of emergency management, this study identified four stages of the emergency management process and conducted an in-depth analysis of the experience gained at each stage from the perspective of urban resilience. Then, this study evaluated the level of urban resilience of Wuhan City, and put forward suggestions for enhancement of the emergency system of China. The findings provided important revelation for other cities to cope with major disasters in the future.

The discipline of emergency management (EM) is at a critical crossroads. Emergency managers around the world are faced with new threats, new responsibilities, and new opportunities. AbstractSince the second half of the latest century the disaster landscape has experienced important changes. Disasters are not only increasing in quantity, they are also qualitatively different and seem to distress humanity to a considerably higher degree than in the past. This evolution does not only deeply affect modern societies; it might also have a disruptive impact on the intervening units of emergency management organizations. Recent disaster research mainly focuses on mitigation efforts, risk reduction and resilient societies. Though, despite good mitigation efforts and up-to-date preparation initiatives, still millions of people are affected and thousands killed annually by some kind of disaster. As a consequence, disaster response remains a vital aspect of disaster management and will even become more important in the future taking into consideration the changing disaster landscape. On that account, our study aims to remodel the response phase of the disaster management life cycle, focusing on a new and fresh approach. We consider the response phase as an unfolding global process and its ensuing sub-processes rather than just an enumeration of potential activities.
