Histological analysis was performed on the liver of 27 cats of different breeds, age and sex, autopsied at the Department of Pathological Morphology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Belgrade, and findings showed lymphoplasmocytic cholangiohepatitis, different degrees of fibrosis, passive hyperemia, fatty changes, cholestase, and neoplasms. The mentioned entities occurred very rarely as individual morphological manifestations, because the liver has different functions so that one morphological change often causes others to follow. Thus, for example, fibrosis was often followed by intrahepatic cholestase. Histopathological evaluation of liver disease is important not only in the autopsied samples, but also in diagnostics of liver diseases, in samples obtained by biopsy, which is important for making a precise diagnosis. The interpretation of the established histological changes in the liver requires close cooperation between clinicians and pathologists, because the final diagnosis is made on the grounds of morphological, biochemical and clinical findings.

A prerequisite of current therapy in liver disease is precise diagnosis. The rapid increase in the number of tests available—immunological, virological, histological and radiological—testifies to this, and reflects the inadequacy of the ‘standard’ liver function tests (LFTs). The LFTs are, however, in contrast to these more sophisticated tests, observer independent and despite their lack of specificity, several characteristic patterns of abnormality can be recognised which direct the physician to the most appropriate definitive investigation. The cheapness and non-invasive nature of the LFTs makes them particularly appropriate for monitoring the course of liver diseases once the diagnosis has been established and this, together with screening for hepatotoxicity of newly developed drugs, is now their main role. A second generation of liver function tests based on the capacity of the liver to eliminate various test compounds may come closer to offering a true estimate of liver function. More accurate methods of measuring the various bilirubin fractions, particularly bilirubin conjugates may also become available in the near future and provide more sensitive tests of liver dysfunction.

The role of miR-21 in the pathogenesis of various liver diseases, together with the possibility of detecting microRNA in the circulation, makes miR-21 a potential biomarker for noninvasive detection. In this review, we summarize the potential utility of extracellular miR-21 in the clinical management of hepatic disease patients and compared it with the current clinical practice. MiR-21 shows screening and prognostic value for liver cancer. In liver cirrhosis, miR-21 may serve as a biomarker for the differentiating diagnosis and prognosis. MiR-21 is also a potential biomarker for the severity of hepatitis. We elucidate the disease condition under which miR-21 testing can reach the expected performance. Though miR-21 is a key regulator of liver diseases, microRNAs coordinate with each other in the complex regulatory network. As a result, the performance of miR-21 is better when combined with other microRNAs or classical biomarkers under certain clinical circumstances.

Dementia is a condition caused by and associated with separate physical changes in the brain. The signs and symptoms of dementia are very similar across the diverse types, and it is difficult to diagnose the category by behavioral symptoms alone. Diagnostic criteria have relied on a constellation of signs and symptoms, but it is critical to understand the neuroanatomical differences among the dementias for a more precise diagnosis and subsequent management. With this regard, this review aims to explore the neuroanatomical aspects of dementia to better understand the nature of distinctive subtypes, signs, and symptoms. This is a review of English language literature published from 1996 to the present day of peer-reviewed academic and medical journal articles that report on older people with dementia. This review examines typical neuroanatomical aspects of dementia and reinforces the importance of a thorough understanding of the neuroanatomical characteristics of the different types of dementia and the differential diagnosis of them.
