The paper aims to show how to engage students attending an online language course in various activities which by stimulating reflection enhance the learning process and result in better learning outcomes. By blending cognitivist, constructivist, constructionist and behavioural ideas, course developers and tutors can produce materials and use methods which satisfy the varied needs of adults who want to improve their writing skills. Such a blend leads to a unique design, which can be achieved by tools available in a virtual learning environment. Course participants will be more adequately prepared for writing genuine texts in the future through use of such activities as working with authentic resources integrated with different tasks and assignments to stimulate reflection; studying under the supervision and guidance of the tutor; participating in collaborative projects to promote learner autonomy; developing new knowledge through meaning-making discussions; doing peer review as well as summative, formative assessment, and self-assessment. Experience of these ways of working will help the participants to eventually become self-regulated, lifelong learners.

One of topicalities in the field of education in the 21st century is a necessity to share responsibility. Namely, students should learn to be more responsible for how and what they learn, whereas teachers should learn to share the ownership of the learning process with students, letting them be more involved in it as decision-makers. One way how teachers can encourage students become more conscious of the learning process is to engage them in self-assessment of their learning and learning outcomes. One of self-assessment tools in language education is the European Language Portfolio (the ELP). Apart from different ELPs for adults, there is a portfolio for students in Latvia: My Language Portfolio – The European Language Portfolio for young learners (age 7–12) in the paperback and digital versions. In the present study, the researchers explore how self-assessment can be incorporated in the English language lessons by offering self-assessment activities and the ELP to Grade 6 students to work on their reading skills. Reading skills make the basis for every person’s literacy as reading does not only concern reading itself, it is also about being able to master general knowledge of any other school subject and the world knowledge in general. Thus, the aim of the research is to find out how self-assessment can be used to improve reading skills in English in Grade 6. A case study was carried out for one month in one primary school in Riga, the research sample being two separate groups of Grade 6 students, in total – 26. The researchers analysed and interpreted data collected from assessment and self-assessment of reading activities, questionnaires filled out by students. The main findings of the research show that self-assessment can successfully be incorporated in lessons of English of Grade 6 students as it increases students’ motivation to learn and their reading skills improve. That could be based on the fact that self-assessment allows students to take more ownership of their learning process and learning outcomes, that way making students become more responsible. However, overall progress is not immense and for students who are more competent in English, improvement of their reading skills can barely be traced. It has to be highlighted that students, whose confidence in their English reading skills is lower, benefit from self-assessment more. It could be explained by students’ conscious work on particular problems with reading in English they discover while completing self-assessment activities.

The article reveals the concept of individualization and differentiation of curriculum content in a real and virtual learning environment. It examines how the virtual learning environment (EDUKA class) features the ability to personalize and differentiate tasks, use digital textbooks and virtual material, provide and receive feedback, monitor progress and learning outcomes, and help to individualize and differentiate the content of elementary education at school. In order to evaluate the use of the core functions of the virtual teaching environment “EDUKA class” – working with groups, tasks and lesson material, feedback and learning outcomes and tracking progress - to differentiate and personalize the content of primary education, a quantitative survey was conducted - a written survey of respondents. It took place in 2017 from June to August, 109 Lithuanian primary school teachers were actively interviewing the virtual learning environment “EDUKA class” in the learning process. Data received by respondents in response to closed questions were analyzed by the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 17.0 program. Descriptive statistics used for quantitative survey processing. The qualitative analysis (i. e. content analysis) was used to analyze the answers to open questions in the questionnaire. The results of the research showed that in the virtual teaching environment “EDUKA class”, the teacher quickly and comfortably divides students into homogeneous groups according to their talents, progress, inclinations, interests. Based on the individual differences of pupils, the teacher creates open-ended tasks and closed-ended tests in accordance with the complexity of the group’s students. Conducts teaching materials (files, links) created and used in the educational process. Environment The “EDUKA class” facilitates teacher work by differentiating learning content, monitoring student learning outcomes and progress by providing feedback to students and their parents.

This study investigates teachers’ competencies in the implementation of facilities, principles, educators’ roles, and interactions in the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Using explanatory sequential mixed method, it aims to examine whether all those competencies such as learning system tools and resources, technology quality, and workload management are considered throughout the learning process. In total, 102 students from the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers’ Training at Antasari State Islamic University were involved in the survey. Fourteen of them, as well as three lecturers, were then interviewed. The results indicate that despite students’ limited access to the internet, lecturers attempt to provide all students’ facilities. However, in some departments, various learning activities, monitoring, and feedback still need to be improved. The lecturers generally execute the principle of the virtual learning environment. The students mostly believe that lecturers are aware of their roles, and manage their interactions well. In conclusion, the study suggests teachers’ competencies in the virtual learning environment and calls for further studies in this subject.

This paper examines the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in relation to its implication for academic libraries in the 21st century. It sheds light on how technological development has had major impacts in the academic library, with regards to how information is being constructed, transmitted and accessed by library users. In the course of this discourse it was deduced that students constitute a significant percentage of the academic library users. The technological development in the academic sphere has enabled ubiquitous interactions between students and teachers, in which students are enabled to learn and communicate with their teachers from remote locations, thus inducing the notion of VLE. The VLE is regarded as technological-based environment where learners are enabled to access learning outside the classroom. With the aid of VLE students are granted ownership of their learning process, thus ensuring positive learning outcomes. Finally, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was employed to serve as the theoretical basis of this discourse.
