The essay is an analysis of three interpretations of Pierre Bonnard’s paintings offered by Jean Clair, John Elderfield, and Yves-Alain Bois. Their approaches are crucial in the context of the revaluation Bonnard’s works and his place in the history of modern painting, which has been continuing since the 1980s. Today’s scholars have been interested mostly in his late works from 1920-1947. At that time the artist created a multidimensional pictorial synthesis which addressed the most advanced dilemmas which appeared in the first half of the 20th century. The critical opinions analyzed in the essay, referring to physiology and the psychology of perception, the cognitive conditions of visual perception, and specific philosophical traditions, stem from individual visual experience and demonstrate significant tensions. Taking the painting as a starting point triggers differences in interpretation not just at the level of theoretical discourse, but in respect to visualization itself. Bonnard’s works significantly program the process of visual perception – grasping the changing rhythm of relation between the center and periphery and moving toward fixations scattered in the visual field. The specific composition of paintings makes the spectator deconcentrate; it can be grasped in an act of perception which extends in time. Such “delay” of perception means that Bonnard’s paintings are a challenge to the gestalt psychology which prevails in the analytical practice of art history. The unique quality of Bonnard’s works, based on the coexistence of the rhythms of organization and disorder, shows no superior coherence of the gestalt. They establish an “inconclusive” relation between the part and the whole, which results in continuing deference and delay of the integration of motifs and elements of the pictorial field. The discussed episode in Bonnard’s art’s reception confirms a belief that “he is not a painter for those in a hurry. The phenomenon of the perceptive delay seems to be significantly connected with the delay in discovering such qualities by art historians.

By taking as a starting point “The Clit List,” a pornographic database that includes porn material addressed to individuals who have experienced sexual harassment(s) and/or assault(s), this essay brings forward the following question: can pornography take the form of a healing process for individuals with a history of sexual violence? In order to provide an answer, alternative uses and aspects of pornography will be explored, with a particular focus on queer, feminist, and ethical porn. Following the contemporary history of pornography, I engage with both Queer Theory by discussing queer feminist approaches to porn, but also Affect Theory by sharing queer feminist approaches to trauma and the potential healing that an (erotic) film can induce in the spectator. More than simply seeking for alternative aspects of porn, this essay accounts for the (re)introduction of pornography as a productive media with a sexual healing possibility.

The purpose of the study is to prove the innovative approaches of F. Schubert in vocal works on the example of his later opuses – the vocal cycle „Winterreiseˮ, op. 90 („Winter Roadˮ) and the song collection „Der Schwanengesangˮ („Swan Songˮ). The methods of this proposed scientific article are based on the research approaches (historical, compare, analytical), which allow to us to follow the path of dramatization of the song in the late works of F. Schubert, as well as to determine the conformity of the vocal intonation to the poetic text. The material of scientific intelligence there are ten separate songs, namely, five songs from the vocal cycle „Winter Pathˮ and five songs on the lyrics by G. Heine from the collection „Swan Songˮ. In our opinion, they are not only indicative, but also similar in form, methods and content. The scientificnovelty of this research is to in the treatment to the issues of determining the correspondence of vocal intonation to a poetic text. Conclusions. Lyrics by Wilhelm Muller and Heinrich Heine are the peak of Schubertʼs vocal lyrics, the starting point for the further development of the song (romance) genre. Simplicity and the associated „sociability” of song intonation, on the one hand, naturally continue the traditions of the Austro-German song Lied. However, while the melody of Schubert reveals time fundamentally new qualities caused by the composerʼs innovative attitude to its formation. The reason for this is a great attention to the verbal text. The close interaction of poetic words and music, especially in the late works of the composer romantic, gives rise to a fundamentally new type of vocal intonation, a new level of voice and accompaniment and, as a final result, the emergence of a new quality of the chamber-vocal work – „poems with music”, thereby pushing on the further path of development of chamber vocal genres.

Walter Pater was a man of letters and art critic associated with the Art for Art’s Sake movement. Pater was a notably quiet Oxford don. However, in 1873 he published Studies in the History of the Renaissance, the conclusion of which scandalized his peers at Oxford for its perceived hedonism. Pater dedicated a chapter of the book to the German art historian Johann Winckelmann, who identified the underlying paganism in all religions borne out in Renaissance art. Winckelmann’s appreciation of male beauty and his assembly of youthful followers served as a model for Pater’s own circle of acolytes at Brasenose College. Pater’s Renaissance influenced a generation of aesthetes, including Oscar Wilde, who were inspired by art and criticism free from moral constraint. Pater advises readers to cultivate their awareness of worldly phenomena because experience itself is a desirable human end in a world of constant flux. Pater emphasizes the importance of experience in Miscellaneous Studies where he depicts man as tabula rasa, molded individually by happenstance. Marius the Epicurean details Pater’s theory of aesthetic experience. Art, by means of its strangeness, allows the spectator to capture an impression (a mixture of subjective response and objective quality) of reality that transcends the ravages of time and finite existence.

The essay is a response to a biographical dominant of the critical discourse on the works of Alina Szapocznikow. It seems to miss an aspect of her sculpture which isthe most important from the point of view of art history – that of the impact of thespecific works on the spectator. Such an objective of art history has been formulated by Michael Brötje, the founder of the existential-hermeneutic study of art. That radical theory, based on the dismissal of the discourses which are external to the artistic object, instead turning the critic’s attention to the medium as the meaningful foundation of the work, is adequate to a perspective adopted in the present essay. It has been modified to fit sculpture since Brötje himself applied it mainly to painting. The essay includes analyses of her three works: “Stopy (Fetysz V),” “Maria Magdalena,” and “Dwuczęściowa.” In each case, the existential-hermeneutic method has been applied; focusing mainly on the impact of the medium, as well as the term “creation-analogy” has been used, also originally introduced by Brötje. That term makes it possible to express nonreflective qualities which constitute the meanings of the works in question. The descriptions present evidence that such qualities are inseparably connected to the substance of sculpture and stem from its structural order. The analysis of “Stopy (Fetysz V)” introduces the term “creation-analogy,” demonstrating that a description which reveals the artifact’s impact does not have tobe related to meanings implemented by external discourses. Autonomous reflectionon the work’s medium points at a visual analogy to the key stages of the history of salvation described in the Bible. A biblical parable, so distant from the usual contexts which have determined the perception of the work, coherently grasps each of the sculpture’s elements. Another analysis proves that the content can be intentionally grafted on the medium. In “Maria Magdalena,” Szapocznikow presented in a concise way the life of the title figure, including the stages of her advancement to sainthood shown in the Scripture. That allowed the critic to show a possible connection of the artist’s intention with a visual analogue. The description offered stresses also the formal complexity of the sculpture, which makes it difficult to follow the perceptual logic of the work. That contributes to a network of meanings, graspable only through non-rational contemplation. The last analysis demonstrates that Szapocznikow’s works can also generate parables which are not related to religion. “Dwuczęściowa” turns out to express the artist’s opinion on the influence of technology on human life. Still, the sculpture reveals also meanings far from those opinions, activating the archetype of “Mother-Earth.” That analogy, unrelated to biblical topics, is quite general, yet intelligible to all spectators who enjoy contemplation. The conclusion is that the results presented must be systematized to become a starting point for a future theory of systematic analysis of sculpture in terms of existential-hermeneutic study of art.

The theories of the French intellectual Georges Bataille have had a significant influence on much recent arts practice and criticism. Bataille’s later work (c.1937–1962), however, is often overlooked in cultural practice and theory. In this later period his thought becomes richer; no less transgressive, no less excessive, and indubitably more philosophical. This thesis will argue the importance of using the chronological range of Bataille’s writing. In particular, it will redress the critical neglect in art history of his later work. The selective use of Bataille’s early work, especially the informe, in the American art history of Rosalind Krauss will be critiqued. The thesis will deploy concepts developed extensively in two late works, Inner Experience and The Accursed Share, to discuss the practice of two visual artists that do not figure in the type of methodology that Krauss adopts; the Anglo-Irish painter Francis Bacon and the Swiss installation artist Thomas Hirschhorn. Inner Experience, a work revolving around the theme of ‘limit-experience’, will be the catalyst in an analysis of the works of Francis Bacon. This thesis will demonstrate that although Bacon was an avowed atheist, he ventures to capture a sacred and impossible moment in his painting that parallels the “movement of contestation” in “inner experience.” The conception of economy developed in The Accursed Share derives from the germ of Bataille’s economic theory, first outlined in the 1933 essay “The Notion of Expenditure.” Thomas Hirschhorn’s practice and his desire to “work politically” will be examined from the perspective of Bataillean expenditure and the notion of general economy.

The purpose of the article is to reveal the artistic and stylistic features of men's costumes in R. Balayan film "Flights in Dreams and Reality" (Polyoty vo sne i nayavu) as significant for Ukrainian cinema and design of the 1970s-1980s. The proposed research contributes to the history of costume in cinema, considering it as an object of design in the context of the 1970s-1980s fashion, world and domestic cultural paradigm. Methodology. Work on the chosen topic involves the following theoretical methods: an analytical research method for generalization and delineation of issues; comparative analysis to identify the features of men's costume in cinema in the context of domestic and world cultural heritage; the art history method will serve to understand the contribution of the visual series in the film to modern design and culture in general. The scientific novelty of the study is to explain the correlation of men's costume in cinema and the fashion mainstream of the late 1970s - early 1980s on the example of the film "Flights in Dreams and Reality". It should be noted that previously the analysis of R. Balayan's work was primarily directed to find the origins of visual imagery and its semantic content; the place and role of costumes in his films, the socio-cultural context in which they were created were not previously considered in detail. Despite the numerous bibliography of materials devoted to the work of R. Balayan and especially "Flights…" (Может нужно было полное название "Flights in Dreams and Reality") which covered the most various artistic aspects, still such as an important component of R. Balayan's films as the costume has been practically ignored. Conclusions. Understanding of the role of costumes in domestic cinema on the example of the film "Flights in Dreams and Reality", which reflects not only the visual part of the film but also the cultural and artistic context of the film, gives a new starting point for studying the history of men's costume and its contribution to modern fashion. The laconism and harmony of figurative solutions of the 1970s experience their last years of popularity in the early 1980s, right before their disappearance, giving us an example of the perfect combination of simple form and deep filling, which can serve as an example to follow in modern men's clothing design.

Sabres in the context of research on historical weapons – a contribution to the history of Polish hoplology This article is an attempt to provide a comprehensive view on the history of hoplology in relation to the most popular type of weapon used in the old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the sabre. The research history addresses the issue of modern weapons, which is motivated by the emergence of various types of sabre at that time. Research on old weapons, inspired primarily by collectors, museologists and members of academia, traditionally uses a range of methods developed by history, art history, archaeology and art restoration. Such research can also enter the field of sociology and cultural studies, provided that we take into account the fact that weapons, sabres in particular, symbolized social standing. The variety of issues, which are generally confined to the above mentioned concepts, also translates into the historiographic sphere. Because of that, it may be surprising that Polish literature on historical weapons only dates back to the second half of the 19th century. However, collectors had shown interest in military items much earlier. The first part of the article presents the most important private collections of weapons from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, with particular focus on the almost entirely preserved collection of Izabela Czartoryska, who founded the first museum in Poland. This layout is the starting point for presenting academic interest in military items, divided into the pre- and post-war periods.

This article collects the educational path derived from the significant changes that have taken place throughout the recent history of education in Spain and, specifically, in relation to people with disabilities. As a starting point, an analysis is carried out of the transformations that have occurred in the discourse on the education of people with lower functional performance, until a historical approach is reached by virtue of which the different stages and binding educational regulations are revealed (with national and international character), highlighting‒exclusively–those that have a direct impact on the quality of life of people in a situation of disabilities. As can be imagined, the history of education in Spain has evolved as policies have changed their purposes around the diversity of students and their universality in the classroom. In this sense, the need to make visible this new paradigm of human rights derived from the International Convention on the Rights of Persons in a situation of Disabilities (UN, 2006) and, in contrast, the continuity of a national corpus juris that reveals the ineffectiveness of the State and other institutions to extinguish situations of discrimination on the grounds of low functional performance.
