<em>Pelargonium graveolens</em> L’Hér. is an important aromatic and medicinal plant, which is famous for its essential oils (EOS).The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of UV-B on growth factors, essential oils components, antioxidant activity of essential oils and antioxidant enzymes activity, carbohydrate content, leaf pigments and total protein. Cuttings from potted plants were exposed to 0, 0.12, 0.26, and 0.38 W m-2 of UV-B radiation. The antioxidant enzyme activity, carbohydrate content and protein and pigments contents were measured by spectrophotometric methods. The composition of EOS was analyzed by GC-MS. The antioxidant activity of the EOS was analyzed by free radical scavenging activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Results demonstrated that the leaves’ fresh and dry mass, plant height, number of leaves, and the content of chlorophyll, protein and total carbohydrates were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased, when plants were subjected to increased intensity of UV radiation. In contrast, the content of carotenoids and antioxidant enzymes activities increased. The chemical composition of EOS indicated that the main components in all treated plants were citronellol, geraniol, and citronellyl formate. The antioxidant activity of the essential oils increased with increasing UV-B radiation. The maximum and minimum IC50 values of essential oils were obtained in control plants and plants under 0.38 W m-2 UV-B radiation, respectively.

Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) has been widely known to delay the postharvest fruit senescence; nevertheless, its effect on antioxidant activity and cell wall metabolism of wolfberry fruit is largely unknown. The present study investigated the impact of elevated CO2 on the quality attributes and cell wall degradation of wolfberry fruit during storage. The results showed that 10% CO2 better maintained the physiological quality and conferred the reduction in weight loss, decay index, and color change. Higher 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, total phenol and flavonoid content, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity of wolfberry were detected at elevated CO2 concentrations. Elevated CO2 atmosphere contributed to the maintenance of the cell integrity, the decrease of cell wall degradation (polygalacturonase, pectate lyase, cellulase, and β-glucosidase), and the increase of cellulose and proto pectin content. Overall, we revealed the potential mechanism of elevated CO2 on the antioxidant activity enhancement and cell wall homeostasis of fresh berry fruit.

This study aimed to compare the chemical composition, the antioxidant activity and the antibacterial activity of essential oils (EOs) of Juniperus phoenicea, Juniperus thurifera and Juniperus oxycedrus, obtained from Ait Bouguemez region (Province of Azilal, Morocco). The analysis by GC/MS of essential oils led to identify 37, 54 and 38 components for J. phoenicea, J. thurifera, and J. oxycedrus, respectively. Monoterpenic fraction was found predominant in essential oils of the three samples. The DPPH free radical scavenging activity showed that essential oil of J. thurifera has the strongest antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 12.07 μg/mL. The antibacterial activity showed that S. aureus was more sensitive than P. aeruginosa and E. coli for the three EOs tested.

Cymbopogon species from the Poaceae family are widely distributed in the Himalayan region of India and commonly used as flavors, fragrances, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. It is known to contain compound citral, which give the lemon scent to many of the plants of the cymbopogon genera. The essential oil of  Cymbopogon flexuosus has high polyphenolic content which is responsible for antioxidant properties.  Beside citral is also used for the synthesis of vitamin B and Ionones. The bioactive potential of Lemongrass and constituent are rapidly increasing which is reflected from growing number of reports being published.  The present study was to know the chemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of essential oil of C. flexuosus from Uttarakhand. The essential oils of Cymbopogon collected in the region of Uttarakhand were obtained by hydrodistillation of the leaves and analyzed for chemical composition by GC/MS. The antioxidant activity of essential oils at different concentrations was determined against DPPH radical activity and vitamin C as the standard antioxidant compound.  The IC50    value and percentage of DPPH inhibition were recorded.  Twenty-five compounds were identified in essential oil extracted from leaves representing 93.15% of the oil composition. The yield of essential oil of Cymbopogon was 0.6 + 0.1 %and the major compound in the essential oil was citral (a racemic mixture of two isoforms geranial and nearl) followed by heptenone(1.98%) , linalool(1.65%), geraniol (1.47%), ?-caryophyllene (1.14% ) , limonene (0.92%),  nearl acetate (0.82%), citronellal(0.44 %) and citronellol (0.22%). Radical scavenging capacity (Inhibition, %) of the C. flexuosus essential oil was high (78.19+1.11) at the concentration level of 150 ?g/ml and  IC50 value of the essential oil was 43.67?g/ml.  The data of this study encourages to consider the essential oil of C. flexuosus  as a source of bioactive compounds which may add great industrial value to this crop.

This work presents the first phytochemical investigation of Geranium kikianum Kit Tan & G. Vold (Geraniaceae), a species endemic to the southern Peloponnese, Greece. The essential oil from aerial parts of the plant was isolated by hydrodistillation and its chemical composition characterized by GC-MS. A total of 26 compounds were identified, constituting 98.3% of the oil composition. Oxygenated sesquiterpenes were the main group of constituents (75.4%). The major component of the oil was the sesquiterpene ketone germacrone (45.6%). Eleven alcohols represented the most diverse chemical class in the volatile oil (36.3%), and phytol was the most abundant acyclic diterpene alcohol (11.4%). The volatile compounds and residual water remaining after hydrodistillation were screened for their radical-scavenging activity by the DPPH method. IC 50 values ranged from 0.2±0.03 mg/mL for the undiluted decoction to 69.7±0.5 mg/mL for the essential oil. The significant antioxidant activity of the residual water, comparable with that of the widespread synthetic antioxidant BHT (0.2±0.01 mg/mL), and almost tenfold higher than thymol (1.90 ± 0.04 mg/mL), correlates with a high content of total phenolic compounds (100.2±1.7 mg GAE/g), and flavonoids (11.9±1.2 mg GAE/g).

Aims: To study the chemical composition of volatile oil samples from different place in Egypt (Mansoura, Gamsa and Assuit) and study their antioxidant activity determined by DPPH assay. Study Design: Hydro distillation of volatile oil samples and their GC/MS analysis and determination of their antioxidant activity by DPPH assay. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of pharmacy, Mansoura university, Egypt, between June 2015 and November 2017.   Methodology: The essential oil was isolated by hydro-distillation for 5 h using a Clevenger-type all-glass apparatus according to the standard procedure of the European pharmacopeia and volatile oils analysis was performed by GC and GC-MS. GC analysis was carried out using Focus-DSQ-ӀI GC/MS instrument (Thermo Scientific, MA, USA) equipped with TR-5 fused silica column (30 m × 0.25 mm, film thickness 0.25 µm). Results: The yield of the essential oils of three rosemary plants growing in Mansoura (RM), Gamsa (RG) and Assiut (RA) were 0.20% v/w, 0.32% v/w and 0.24% v/w, respectively. Their chemical composition was analyzed by GC/MS, RM and RG were found to be α-pinene dominated chemotypes, 32.4% and 29.6%, respectively, meanwhile RA was camphor dominated chemotype (17.2%). Furthermore, their antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH assay. Their IC50 values of essential oils of RM, RG and RA were 8.66 ± 0.7, 8.18 ± 0.5 and 9.74 ± 0.2, respectively. Conclusion: The GC/MS spectral data revealed the considerable difference between the chemical composition of essential oil constituents of RM, RG and RA which lead to different chemotypes. The present results also demonstrate that REO obtained from different areas in Egypt exhibited free radical scavenging activity determined by DPPH assay due to the synergistic effect between their constituents.

The aim of the present study is to characterize chemical compositions and antioxidant, anticholinesterase and anti-tyrosinase activities of Ferula elaeochytris and Sideritis stricta essential oils. The hydrodistilled essential oils were analyzed by GC/FID and GC/MS. A total of thirty-three and twenty-seven compounds representing 99.6 % and 99.4 % were identified in F. elaeochytris and S. stricta, respectively. The main compounds of essential oil of F. elaeochytris were β-cubebene (21.3 %), caryophyllene oxide (17.5 %) and β-caryophyllene (14.9 %), while the major compounds of S. stricta essential oil were δ-cadinene (18.3 %), cubenol (17.6 %) and β-caryophyllene (14.4 %). The antioxidant activity was tested by β-carotene-linoleic acid, DPPH free radical scavenging, ABTS cation radical scavenging, CUPRAC and metal chelating assays. The essential oil of F. elaeochytris showed the highest antioxidant activity in all assays. Also, the anticholinesterase and anti-tyrosinase activities of essential oils were performed against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and tyrosinase enzymes. F. elaeochytris essential oil indicated the highest anticholinesterase and anti-tyrosinase activities as well. This is the first report describing antioxidant, anticholinesterase and anti-tyrosinase activities of essential oils of F. elaeochytris and S. stricta.

This research was undertaken to investigate the effect of gamma rays at dose rates of 5.0, 10.0 and 15.0 kGy on the chemical composition of essential oils, total antioxidants, total flavonoids and total phenols, as well as the antioxidant activity and the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and the free radical-scavenging activity (DPPH) of thyme. Radiation processing increased the total phenols, total flavonoids and total antioxidants of thyme, and moderate changes were detected at doses of 5 and 10 kGy for the essential oils. Thymol was sensitive to irradiation, especially at 15.0 kGy doses. In addition, the evaluation of antioxidant activity using DPPH radical-scavenging activity indicated some decreases of antioxidant activity in irradiated samples, while thyme exposed to doses of 10 and 15 kGy exhibited a significant increase in TBA values. The irradiation process can facilitate the utilisation of thyme as a preservative ingredient in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

The influence of harvest period and drying method of Salvia officinalis L. leaves on the content of essential oils, polyphenols and antioxidant properties was investigated. Sage leaves were collected twice during plant blossoming (in June and July) and dried traditionally in natural conditions and at 35 °C. Antioxidant activity was assayed in methanol-acetone extracts and infusions of dried leaves with the use of free radical scavenging activity (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) technique. Total phenolic content in extracts as well as in infusions was determined by the means of Folin–Ciocalteu method. Based on the LC/MS analysis, the polyphenol compounds present in both extracts and in infusions were identified. The extracts contained more polyphenols and were characterized by higher antioxidant activity than infusions. In the extracts significant amount of ferulic acid was found, which was influenced both by the harvest period and drying method. The amount of ferulic acid found in extracts obtained from the June leaves dried traditionally was three times lower (6.185 μg/g DW) than in extracts from July leaves dried in the same conditions. Harvest period had a significant effect on the essential oils’ content, leaves collected in July contained 15% more oils than those collected in June.

Leaves of Lippia thymoides (Verbenaceae) were dried in an oven at 40, 50 and 60 °C and the kinetic of drying and the influence of the drying process on the chemical composition, yield, and DPPH radical scavenging activity of the obtained essential oils were evaluated. The composition of the essential oils was determined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection analyses. The influence of drying on the chemical composition of the essential oils of L. thymoides was evaluated by multivariate analysis, and their antioxidant activity was investigated via the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The Midilli model was the most appropriate to describe the behavior of drying kinetic data of L. thymoides leaves. Thymol was the major compound for all analyzed conditions; the maximum content was obtained from fresh leaves (62.78 ± 0.63%). The essential oils showed DPPH radical scavenging activity with an average of 73.10 ± 12.08%, and the fresh leaves showed higher inhibition (89.97 ± 0.31%). This is the first study to evaluate the influence of drying on the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of L. thymoides essential oils rich in thymol.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential use of the essential oil of Kitaibelia vitifolia Willd. in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of essential oil of K. vitifolia isolated by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus were assessed. GC/FID and GC/MS analyses were used to determine the major components of the essential oil as sclareoloxide ( cis A/B) 17.9%, sclaral 10.9%, labda-7,13,14-triene 10.6% and sclareol 9.5%. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was evaluated against the bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 13883, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Proteus vulgaris ATCC 13315, P. mirabilis ATCC 14153, and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633; and fungal strains: Candida albicans ATCC 10231 and Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404. Antimicrobial activity was tested using a broth dilution procedure for determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The essential oil of K. vitifolia showed strong antimicrobial activity. Antioxidant activities of the essential oils were evaluated using the DPPH and hydroxy radical scavenging, lipid peroxidation and metal chelating assays. The results for antioxidant activity were compared with control antioxidants, ascorbic acid, gallic acid, α-tocopherol and BHT. Results showed that the essential oil possesses antioxidant activity, with total antioxidant capacity of 95.4±0.7 μg AA/g and IC50 values of 5.45±1.45 μg/mL for DPPH free radical scavenging activity, 26.5±1.6 μg/mL for inhibitory activity against lipid peroxidation, 79.4±0.4 μg/mL for hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, and 39.9±0.7 μg/mL for metal chelating activity.
