In their version of modernization theory, R. Inglehart and K. Welzel suggest that younger cohorts socialized under conditions of existential security are the main drivers of post-materialist values and modernization process. In this paper, we test this thesis based on five waves of the World Values Survey fielded in Russia and covering the period from 1990 to 2017. We use age-period-cohort analysis, which disentangles the effects of age, time period and cohorts. We implement a method of measuring emancipative values proposed by K. Welzel. His emancipative values consist of four different indices: «autonomy», «equality», «choice», and «voice». The results show that younger cohorts in Russia do have a higher level of emancipative values as suggested by the theory. The basis for the transformation of values is three indices out of four: «autonomy», «choice», and «voice». «Equality» is the only index that showed neither age nor cohort differences. After 20 years of innovation, the economy of Vietnam has achieved high growths with lots of advantages for the country’s industrialization and modernization process. The country has gradually reduced poverty, created more jobs, improved people's life standards and narrowed down the economic gap between its own and that of other countries in the world. However, economy growths have at the same time caused big pressure on the quality of the environment, especially in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. The environmental problems such as water pollution, air and solid waste are becoming more and more serious. This paper presents discussions on the following issues in the case of Hanoi: (1) an analysis of the economy development from 2008 up to present; (2) the influences of industrialization- modernization-urbanization process on environmental quality; (3) an analysis of the environmental pollution; and (4) a proposal of the possible measures to protect living environment towards a sustainable development.

The most preferred method for preserving food or related products for a long time period is drying. In various countries of the world, the utilization of solar thermal systems in the field of agricultural for conserving fruits, vegetables, coffee and other related crops has revealed to be economical, practical, and environmental friendly. Solar heating systems to dry food and other crops can improve the quality of the product, while reducing wasted produce. This paper deals with development of solar cum eclectically operated food dryer. The fabrication of hybrid dryer is carried out which will be used for the drying process. The amounts of solar radiations are collected through transparent sheet or glass and they are entered in to dryer. Then, amount of heat will get generated in dryer and it will be circulated through fan in dryer itself which will be suitable for drying purpose. The experimentation is also carried out on two foods related to drying process at normal temperature and using this dryer obtained temperature. After experimentation it has been observed that there is difference in temperature at outside the dryer and inside the dryer. The temperature generated inside the dryer is sufficient for drying purpose. So, the developed food dryer can be used for drying the foods as per requirement.

AbstractThe Internet has played important roles in driving political changes around the world. Why does it help to topple political regimes in some places but improve the quality of governance in others? We found Internet usage in general leads to citizens’ distrust in political institutions. Different political environments, however, can condition such trust-eroding impacts of the Internet in significantly different ways. A democracy enables citizens to connect their online behaviors and offline expression and organization, releasing political discontent while facilitating state–society communication. On the contrary, by restricting various forms of off-line expression, authoritarian regimes drive Internet-active citizens' discontent and distrust to higher levels. We use the World Values Survey data to establish these different mechanisms across democracies and authoritarian systems. Entropy balancing shows our findings to be highly robust.

The subject of discussion are the attitudes of citizens towards the qualities that children should be encouraged to learn in the family, based on the data collected in the fourth wave of the World Values Survey (1999-2004). The aims of this paper are: to determine the hierarchy structure of citizens? values regarding the qualities that children should be encouraged to learn as part of their family upbringing; to determine whether the priority is given to the development of autonomous or conformist personality, as well as the correlates of each of these two orientations; to determine what the position of Serbian public opinion is in comparison to the European countries encompassed by the World Values Survey. The analysis comprises representative samples from 33 European countries, in total 48,220 respondents. The research in Serbia comprised 1200 citizens aged 18 and above. It was shown that Serbian public opinion gives priority to the development of the qualities of an autonomous personality over conformist. Regarding the values and goals of upbringing, Serbia is at the level of average of the European countries as a whole. The younger and more educated respondents give priority to the development of autonomous qualities, as well as those who acquired post-materialist values. Progressive goals of upbringing which are supported by the public can be accomplished with significant changes in the direction of increase of social standard, quality of education and competence of all those people who participate in the upbringing of the young.

This paper contemplates the state of drift in the public’s feeling and trust in the civil services that have authority over them using the World Values Survey data from 1981 to 2013. This study will show that the trust in the civil service as an institution has changed over time and over geographic region. Citizens trust civil servants when the feel they get a good return on the payment that they invest in government through the tax structure and compliance. While contributions per person vary, the outcomes can still be measured and experienced. News of corruption and hypocrisy creates a perception of inferior performance. The purpose of the civil service is to preserve the quality of life of citizens. This is carried out through processes that achieve outcomes from administrative agencies that help citizens to follow rules, cooperate in the provision of the collective good, and respond appropriately in emergencies. By leveraging the World Values Survey data, the study shows trends in trust in civil services across generations and geographies.

This paper discusses some of the factors associated with life satisfaction in Brazil using four waves of the World Values Survey (1991 to 2014). Some results already described in the literature were confirmed, as we found that individuals who were married, employed, more religious, in better health, with greater freedom/control over their lives and who had a better financial situation were more satisfied with life, regardless of the time period. The variables for age and cohort showed non-significant associations with life satisfaction when aspects that theoretically correlated with life satisfaction were controlled in the analysis. When the different cohorts were analyzed separately, the results suggest that life satisfaction might be related to the conjectural and historical factors represented by period effects.

The papaer presents a review of some publications on the history of the development, formation, functions and capabilities of scientometrics, as well as the state of Russian science and its role on the international arena. The thoughts regarding the role of scientometrics in modern scientific research are stated. To date, scientometrics provides a number of possibilities. First of all, it is a system for monitoring publication activity of scientists around the world. Obviously, the main goal is structuring scientific publications with the following improvement of scientific activity. Howewer, are modern scientometric indicators objective in relation not only to the number, but also to the quality of scientific publications? Is the notorious Hirsch index an ideal parameter for evaluating the performance of researchers? Are there any prospects for scientometrics in the modern scientific world, or is a worthy alternative to currently used methods for assessing scientific activity required? These and many other questions are raised by the authors in this article.

In this paper we attempt to classify Russian journals in economics and related disciplines for their scientific significance. We show that currently used criteria, such as a journal’s presence in the Higher Attestation Committee’s list of journals and the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) impact factor, are not very useful for assessing the academic quality of journals. Based on detailed data, including complete reference lists for 2010—2011, we find significant differentiation of Russian journals, including among those located at the top of the RSCI list. We identify two groups of Russian journals, tentatively called category A and B journals, that can be regarded as the most important from the viewpoint of their contribution to the economic science.
