The late Pleistocene deposits of south-central British Columbia record two major glacial and two major nonglacial periods of deposition. The oldest recognized Pleistocene deposits, called Westwold Sediments, were deposited during a nonglacial interval more than 60 000 years ago. Little information is available on the climate of this period, but permafrost may have been present at one time during final stages of deposition of Westwold Sediments. The latter part of this nonglacial period is probably correlative with the early Wisconsin Substage of the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Valley area. However, deposition of the Westwold Sediments may have begun during the Sangamon Interglacial.Okanagan Centre Drift is the name applied to sediments deposited during the glaciation that followed deposition of Westwold Sediments. Okanagan Centre Drift is known to be older than 43 800 years BP and probably is older than 51 000. It is considered to correlate with an early Wisconsin glacial period.Bessette Sediments were deposited during the last major nonglacial period, which in south-central British Columbia persisted from at least 43 800 years BP (possibly more than 51 000) to about 19 000 years BP. This episode corresponds to Olympia Interglaciation of the Pacific Coast region and the mid-Wisconsin Substage of the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Valley area. During parts of Olympia Interglaciation the climate was probably as warm as the present-day climate in the interior of British Columbia. Information from coastal regions indicates that there may have been periods of cooler and moister climate.Kamloops Lake Drift was deposited during the last major glaciation of south-central British Columbia. Ice occupied lowland areas from approximately 19 000 to 10 000 years BP. This period corresponds approximately to the Fraser Glaciation of the Pacific Coast region and the late Wisconsin Substage of central and eastern parts of North America.

Automated Least-Cost Pipeline Route Development in Niger Using Remotely-Sensed Imagery and GIS

An important part of successful pipeline route selection includes the identification of geologic hazards and man-made (anthropogenic) features along any proposed route. Fugro William Lettis & Associates, Inc. (Fugro WLA) was contracted to provide a preferred crude oil transmission pipeline route between the Agadem oil field and the Zinder refinery in south-central Niger. The development of the 460-km long, 500-meter wide corridor involved the use of new geologic mapping and a digital elevation model (DEM) derived from Satellite Pour l’Observation de la Terre (SPOT) remotely-sensed imagery and SPOT High Resolution Stereo (HRS), respectively. The base geologic, anthropogenic and DEM data were provided by Fugro NPA Ltd. (Fugro NPA) and augmented with additional mapping by Fugro WLA. The area of the proposed pipeline route covers varying geologic conditions such as active and relict sand dunes, bedrock outcrops and escarpments, wadis and areas of recent erosion. Anthropogenic features included reservoirs, roads, towns and settlements, agricultural areas and oases. Our study found significant height differences between the dunes and evidence for varying dune activity. Selection of the optimal pipeline route required minimization of total elevation change and exposure to geologic hazards and existing anthropogenic development while obtaining the safest, most direct and economic route between the oil field and refinery. Using a geographic information system (GIS) the digitally-mapped geologic and anthropogenic features and elevation-derived parameters were assigned a relative risk ranking surface. Next, a cumulative cost distance surface and a cost path surface were created between the oil field and the refinery. Lastly, using GIS we developed a least-cost pipeline route option from the cost path surface.

Abstract Background: Kaliondeonde is an AIDS-like immunosuppressive illness of unknown etiology common in Zambia and Malawi. It has similar, but not identical, symptoms to HIV/AIDS, and appears to have been in south central Africa longer. It is often viewed by both the public and academics as being the same as HIV/AIDS. Method: Research was conducted in Zambia among seven kaliondeonde patients to determine the perceptions of the sickness, and the symptoms of the disease, in comparison with HIV/AIDS. A subset of four of the patients were examined by both a traditional healer and a physician, and tested for HIV. Results: Two of the four kaliondeonde patients were found to be HIV negative, suggesting the possibility that kaliondeonde is different from HIV/AIDS. Conclusions: If future research confirms that many kaliondeonde patients are in fact HIV-negative, it will become vitally urgent to clarify the distinctiveness of the two illnesses and alter perceptions and knowledge of kaliondeonde prevention, epidemiology, etiology, and clinical practices.

Formal articulation test responses are often used by the busy clinician as a basis for planning intervention goals. This article describes a 6-step procedure for using efficiently the single-word responses elicited with an articulation test. This procedure involves the assessment of all consonants within a word rather than only test-target consonants. Responses are organized within a Model and Replica chart to yield information about an individual's (a) articulation ability, (b) frequency of target attainment, substitutions, and deletions, (c) variability in production, and (d) phonological processes. This procedure is recommended as a preliminary assessment measure. It is advised that more detailed analysis of continuous speech be undertaken in conjunction with early treatment sessions.
