This book examines the politics of the United States' westward expansion, showing how the government's regulation of population movements on the frontier, both settlement and removal, advanced national aspirations for empire and promoted the formation of a white settler nation. The book details how a government that struggled to exercise plenary power used federal land policies to assert authority over the direction of expansion by engineering the pace and patterns of settlement and to control the movement of populations. At times, the government mobilized populations for compact settlement in strategically important areas of the frontier; at other times, policies were designed to actively restrain settler populations in order to prevent violence, international conflict, and breakaway states. The book examines how these settlement patterns helped construct a dominant racial vision for America by incentivizing and directing the movement of white European settlers onto indigenous and diversely populated lands. The book pays close attention to the failures as well, from the lack of further expansion into Latin America to the defeat of the black colonization movement. It reveals the lasting and profound significance government settlement policies had for the nation, both for establishing America as dominantly white and for restricting broader aspirations for empire in lands that could not be so racially engineered.

One of the most important state tasks in the management system of the mineral resource complex, both at the national and regional levels, is to ensure the reproduction of mineral resources. The solution of this problem can be modeled using the theory of control of active systems, which, of course, can be attributed to the mineral resource complex. When modeling the management system of the mineral resource complex of the region, it is necessary to take into account the impact of risks on the feasibility of a mining project, as elements of the external environment. In this paper, the authors have modeled the management system of the mineral resource complex of the region, taking into account the risks of mining projects.

This study investigates the impact of fuel price adjusment on changes in fuel consumption and inflation in Indonesia. This study uses secondary data obtained from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Trade, Bank Indonesia, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), and PT Pertamina (Persero) from 2006 to 2016 and analyzed by using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method. Research showed, if the government increases Premium Gasoline's price by 10%, in average its consumption would decrease around 2,99 %. However, if the Pertamax Gasoline's price increases, the consumption of Premium Gasoline would also increase due to substitution effect. Every 10% increase in Subsidized Diesel's price, in average its consumption would decrease around 4,80 % and vice versa. However, if the Pertamina dex's price increases, the consumption of Subsidized Diesel would also increase due to substitution effect. Moreover, IDR1.000/L increase in Premium Gasoline's Price would contribute 1,10 % to the inflation rate. On the other hand, increase in Subsidized Diesel's price does not contribute to the inflation rate.

Increasing the efficiency of developing deposits of solid minerals in the polar zone of the northeast of Russia is an objective necessity. Unlike traditional territories, the peculiarities of the region predetermine the use of new approaches and methods in studying the feasibility of developing various deposits, including the widely represented relatively small deposits. Compared to large ones, medium and small mining enterprises operating or created on their basis have fewer opportunities to protect their interests. Their design and actual technical and economic indicators are generally worse than those of more powerful economic entities. The decrease in the scale effect can be achieved in various ways. Reduction of risks in the implementation of investment projects is possible through more thorough study and subsequent additional training, as a rule, complex in structure and heterogeneous in quality deposits involved in operation. A set of basic and private principles of different levels and values has been formed, which should guide small and medium-sized enterprises in the planning, design and development of deposits in the polar zone of Russia. Its use in the preparation and decisionmaking allows at least partially to reduce the impact of complicating and costly production factors.

The results of studies of anthropogenic landscapes functioning with an assessment on the processes of natural self revegetation are summarized. The principles of accelerated restoration of the ecological and aesthetic value of disturbed landscapes at the permafrost zone are substantiated, based on the data obtained during studying the selfrevegetation processes on disturbed complexes. Development of placer and ore deposits of mineral resources is leading to deep transformation of landscape and to destruction of soil-vegetable complexes. The processes caused by mining-technical activity are leading to variable mechanisms of degradation of soil and vegetables often having complex impact. Results of study of sustainability of soil-vegetable complexes to the impact of mancaused activity have showed the dependence from the structure of the soil profile and it characteristic, from the character of genetic horizons, frozen status of the landscape elements, form the structure and biomass and productivity of vegetation cover.

In Ivory Coast, mining is one of the major sources of income for local people. Because of mining, jobs have been created thus increasing employment opportunities in rural regions. Moreover, this is a job that does not require a lot of skills, so a lot of people are able to join at the same time earning huge money within a short amount of time. Not only does this occupation attract adults, children are also interested in this activity. However, the negative social impacts caused by this activity remain indisputable. Chemical products used by miners and unsanitary conditions are harmful not only to miners themselves but also to innocent local people. There is a large destruction of lands, and also prostitution, which leads to the spreading of many contagious diseases. The paper mainly focuses on the impact of artisanal gold mining and its affects to local livelihoods and the environment in Ivory Coast. Some key recommendations for addressing artisanal mining activities in order to have good options for sustainable management of mineral resources in the country will be discussed.

The Bureau of Land Management, the land agency that administers much of the federal rangeland in the American West, has frequently been characterized as excessively responsive to the desires of ranchers, with resulting land deterioration and loss of resource values. Both the generally poor condition of the public domain, and the Bureau's attempt to maintain stocking levels while improving the range, support this characterization.Several policies and programmes over the last decade, however, suggest that the Bureau today is less strongly tied to the livestock industry, and certainly its lands are being increasingly coveted by groups other than grazers. This recent trend towards a more ‘multiple use’ agency has been strengthened by Congressional passage of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act in 1976. Whether or not diversification of land policies will continue into the future is, however, at present unclear.

Transport of large amounts of cargo, mining and exploiting natural mineral resources, carrying large number of passengers by sea are characterized by high risk, even if the latest technologies are employed. It is not a long time ago that thousands of people lost their lives in catastrophes of ships, off-shore oil rigs and other marine objects. It is estimated that around 80% of accidents at sea are caused by making wrong decisions by persons keeping watch on the bridge, especially during difficult navigational and weather conditions. Accidents can also be caused by lack of skills necessary for crews or absence of appropriate tools. Therefore, it is important that seafarers should be trained in accordance with the highest standards. The scope of crew research and training may include both static, dynamic and damage stability. This stand bad also enables the analysis of the influence of the free surface effect of the liquid occurring in the compartments or tanks after damage to the ship's hull and the analysis of the impact of cargo operation on the ship's initial stability. Experiences gained on the research stand lead to a better understanding of the phenomena occurring in the current operation of the ship and to improve the safety of swimming. The aim of this article is presentation selected scenarios for the model tests of vessels and to familiarize with the construction of selected types of ship models and the capabilities of stability test stands in the aspect of improving the safety at sea.
