Wildlife viewing within protected areas is an increasingly popular recreational activity. Management agencies are often tasked with providing these opportunities, yet quantitative analyses of factors influencing wildlife sightings are lacking. We analyzed locations of GPS-collared wolves and wolf sightings from 2945 trips in Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska, USA, to provide a mechanistic understanding of how viewing opportunities are influenced by attributes of wolves and physical, biological, and harvest characteristics. We found that the presence of masking vegetation, den site proximity to the road, pack size, and presence of a wolf harvest closure adjacent to the park affected wolf sightings, and the influence of den proximity on sightings depended on harvest management. Wolf sightings increased with den site proximity to the road in years with a harvest closure adjacent to the park but not in the absence of the closure. The effect of the harvest closure on sightings was similar in magnitude to an increase in pack size by two wolves or a more than a two-fold decrease in masking vegetation. These findings were consistent across a 10-fold change in spatial resolution. Quantitative analysis of the factors influencing wildlife sightings provides valuable insight for agencies tasked with managing viewing opportunities.

Risk to predators hunting dangerous prey is an emerging area of research and could account for possible persistent differences in gray wolf (Canis lupus) pack sizes. We documented significant differences in long-term wolf-pack-size averages and variation in the Superior National Forest (SNF), Denali National Park and Preserve, Yellowstone National Park, and Yukon, Canada (). The SNF differences could be related to the wolves’ risk when hunting primary prey, for those packs () hunting moose (Alces americanus) were significantly larger than those () hunting white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) (, ). Our data support the hypothesis that differential pack-size persistence may be perpetuated by differences in primary prey riskiness to wolves, and we highlight two important extensions of this idea: (1) the potential for wolves to provision and defend injured packmates from other wolves and (2) the importance of less-risky, buffer prey to pack-size persistence and year-to-year variation.

AbstractStudies of abundance and distribution of organisms are fundamental to ecology. The identity of host species is known to be one of the major factors influencing ectoparasitic flea abundance, but explanations are still needed regarding how host taxa influence abundance parameters of different flea species. This study was carried out at La Malinche National Park (LMNP), Tlaxcala, Mexico, where previously 11 flea species had been recorded on 8 host species. Our aims were to list micromammal flea species, to determine flea infection parameters [flea prevalence (FP) and flea mean abundance (FMA)] and to analyse the influence of host species on these parameters. A total of 16 species of fleas were identified from 1178 fleas collected from 14 species of 1274 micromammals captured with Sherman®traps from March 2014 to December 2015 in 18 sites at LMNP. Some host species influence FP and FMA, in particular,Microtus mexicanusandPeromyscus melanotisshowed particularly higher infection values than other host species.Plusaetis aztecusandPlusaetis sibynuswere identified as the most abundant flea species.

Increase of the road safety is the main goal in the sphere of transport management. Authors state that the decision-making process should be based on the analysis of statistical data on the violations, traffic reasons of accidents and problem areas. Official statistics of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate is used as an initial information. As a method to determine factors influencing the traffic safety, the so-called Haddon matrix was used. Efficiency of the proposed recommendations is analyzed from the viewpoint of their role in the process of ensuring safety and sustainability of the city transport system.

A cluster analysis of field observation data was performed using the Statistica 12 software, connections were established in the middle of the data set, and the obtained data were organized into certain structures. As a result of the clustering, groups of clusters that have the greatest impact on speed were identified. Determining the hierarchy of factors influencing the speed and safety of the transport process shall improve approaches for modeling traffic flow velocity dependences. The paper describes an analysis of road safety risk factors.Problem Statement. The need to modernize approaches for traffic flow prediction, traffic volume distribution on the road network, means and methods of traffic management, traffic management systems in connection with quantitative and qualitative changes in the transport sector of Ukraine.Purpose. Road safety risk factors validation and ranking.Materials and method. Mathematical modeling and cluster analysis using survey data.Results. The dependence of speed on road conditions was improved using mathematical modeling.Conclusions.
