Inconel-718 is a nickel based super alloy and is extensively in use for working at very high temperature (upto 2000 °C) such as aero engine gas path equipment, nuclear equipment etc. Drilling micro size hole in such material with laser beam has been a proven choice and laser drilling process produces geometrically and dimensionally improved hole. Hole geometrical features can be improved further if laser drilling system operated at optimal input parameter setting. This paper experimentally investigates the behavior of hole geometrical features hole circularity and hole taper in laser trepan drilling of Inconel -718 sheet. Optimal value of laser input parameters for improved hole circularity and reduced hole taper have been suggested with the help of computational intelligence technique particle swarm optimisation. The effect of each laser input parameter on hole quality characteristics are also discussed and demonstrated graphically. Finally the experimental validation of the predicted results has been carried out.

Laser drilling is a well-established manufacturing process utilised to produce holes in various aeroengine components. This research presents an experimental investigation on the effects of laser drilling process parameters on productivity (material removal rate), hole quality (hole taper) and drilling cost. Single-pulse drilling was employed to drill a thin-walled Inconel 718 superalloy plate of 1 mm thickness using pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The experiments were designed using Box-Behnken statistical approach to investigate the impacts of pulse energy, pulse duration, gas pressure and gas flow rate on the selected responses. Multi-objective optimisation was performed using response surface methodology (RSM) based grey rational analysis (GRA) to identify optimal drilling conditions aiming to maximise the MRR and minimise hole taper and drilling cost. The optimal combination of drilling parameters was found as pulse energy of 20 J, pulse duration of 6 ms, gas pressure of 100 psi and gas flow rate of 40 mm3/s. A detailed cost analysis identified labour cost, gas consumption and machine costs as the major cost elements of the laser drilling process.

AbstractSurface roughness and heat-affected zone (HAZ) are the important features which influence the performance of the laser-drilled products. Understanding the influence of laser process parameters on these responses and identifying the cutting conditions for simultaneous optimization of these responses are a primary requirement in order to improve the laser drilling performance. Nevertheless, no such contribution has been made in the literature during laser drilling of AISI 303 material. The aim of the present work is to optimize the surface roughness (Ra) and HAZ in fibre laser drilling of AISI 303 material using Taguchi-based grey relational analysis (GRA). From the GRA methodology, the recommended optimum combination of process parameters is flushing pressure at 30 Pa, laser power at 2000 W and pulse frequency at 1500 Hz for simultaneous optimization of Ra and HAZ, respectively. From analysis of variance, the pulse frequency is identified as the most influenced process parameters on laser drilling process performance.
