<p><strong>Background:</strong> Breast cancer is the first most common malignancy in Egyptian females. Oxidative stress is considered to be involved in the pathophysiology of all cancers, especially breast cancer<strong>. </strong>An inappropriately low rate of apoptosis can give rise to cancer.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Objectives:</strong> The purpose of this study was to asses, compare and correlate the circulatory levels of some oxidants (malondialdehyde "MDA" and nitric oxide "NO"), total antioxidant capacity "TAO") and soluble form of Fas "sFas" in some Egyptian females having breast cancer.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A cross sectional case/control study conducted on 50 Egyptian females recruited from outpatient clinics or inpatients department of the general surgery at Sohag university hospital, divided into 30 females with malignant breast lesion and 20 healthy females as a control group. Colorimetric assay of serum levels of NO, MDA and TAO, while, sFas was determined using ELISA method.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> There were significant high levels of NO, MDA, TAO and sFas in malignant group than in control group with p-value &lt; 0.0001, high positive correlation between NO, MDA, TAO and sFas in malignant group ( r= 0.958, 0.807, 0.748 respectively and P&lt; 0.0001 for all<strong>). </strong>There was high positive correlation between NO and TAO in malignant group (r = 0.78, P &lt; 0.0001).There was also<strong>, </strong>high positive correlation between MDA and TAO in malignant group (r = 0.81, P &lt; 0.0001).<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>These results support the oxidative stress hypothesis and resistance to apoptosis in development and progression of breast cancer.</p>

Background: Adapted physical activity (APA) aids breast cancer patients. It is necessary to use an adapted target heart rate (HR) when prescribing exercise intensity. Methods: In total, 138 patients previously included in two published randomized clinical trials underwent the CPET and 6MWT before and after adjuvant therapy. Of these patients, 85 had performed APA, and 53 had received only the usual therapy. HRs were recorded during the two tests. Results: Before starting chemotherapy, good agreement (intraclass correlation (ICC) 0.69; confidence interval at 95% IC0.95 (0.591–0.769); p < 0.001) and a moderate correlation were evident between the 6MWT-HR and ventilatory threshold HR of the CPET (r = 0.70; p < 0.001). Good agreement and a high positive correlation were noted only in the group who engaged in APA (ICC 0.77; IC0.95 (0.659–0.848); p < 0.001; r = 0.8; p < 0.01); moderate agreement and a moderate positive correlation were apparent in the control group (ICC 0.57; IC0.95 (0.329–0.74); p < 0.001; r = 0.6; p < 0.01). The correlations were independent of age and body mass index. Conclusions: The 6MWT-HR can be used to prescribe exercise intensity for breast cancer patients both before and after specific treatment with concomitant APA.

               Oxidative stress occurs as a result of disturbance in the balance between the production of reactive oxygen species (free radicals) and antioxidant defenses. Markers of oxidative stress were measured the markers of oxidative stress in breast cancer patients after diagnosis of breast cancer and compared these plasma blood levels controls This study was conducted to three markers of oxidative stress ;these are (SOD) enzyme ,malondialdehyde (MDA)and8-iso-prostaglandinF2α plasma of patients with breast cancer and compare with controls .In this study ;  the mean MDA (ng/ml) levels for the breast cancer patients and the controls were55.91±3.31 and40.61±3.76  respectively, while the SOD (pg/ml) levels were1530.37±80.4 and1851.4 9±93.65  respectively and the 8-iso-PGF2α (ng/ml ) levels were 40.16±3.31 and 30.16±2.34  difference of the mean were statistically significant (p value <0.05).

Objective: to determine the prevalence of explained and unexplained recurrent miscarriages (RM) and to find out if there is a significant relationship between recurrent miscarriages and consanguinity. Methods: A cross sectional in which the cases group included all women with RM attending the outpatient clinic at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital from July 2006 to April 2012 and the controls group included women with no history of RM after matching them with cases for age (case to control ratio was 1:1). The main outcome measures were the prevalence of consanguinity in women with or without recurrent miscarriages. Results: During study period a total of 290 women with RM were seen. Of which, 150 (51.7%) women had unexplained RM. Control group with no history of RM were 300 women. Consanguinity rate among cases (49.5%) %) was less than the controls (52.7 %%). Both first cousin and second cousin marriages were more common in the controls than the cases and it was not statistically significant (p value 0.476, chi squared test). Conclusion: In this study we found that more than half of RM cases were unexplained and there was no significant association between RM and consanguinity.

Abstract: Overtraining accelerates aging due to the excessive production of free radicals that can cause oxidative stress. Banana floret extract contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant capacity which can increase the body's defence to deal with the oxidative stress by increasing the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD). This study was aimed to prove that the banana (Musa x paradisiaca) floret extract could prevent the decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in overtraining-induced mice (Mus musculus) BALB/c liver. This was a true experimental study with the post-test only control group design. Subjects were 36 male mice (Mus musculus), BALB/c strain, 12 weeks old, weighing 20-22 g, which were divided into two groups with 18 mice each. The control group (P0) was treated with a placebo of 1 ml aquadest and overtrained for 14 days meanwhile the treatment group (P1) was treated with banana (Musa x paradisiaca) floret extract of 400 mg/kgBW/day and overtrained for 14 days. The results showed that after 14-day treatment, the mean SOD level in the liver tissue of the P0 group was 568.82±9.558 U/mg protein whereas in the P1 group was 588.37±10.629 U/mg protein (P < 0.01). The t-independent test showed a t value of -5.804 and a P value of 0.000 which indicated that after treatment, the levels of SOD in liver tissue of both groups were significantly different. Conclusion: Banana (Musa x paradisiaca) floret extract could prevent the decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in the liver tissue of overtraining-induced mice (Mus musculus) BALB/c.Keywords: banana floret, SOD, liver, overtrainingAbstrak: Aktivitas fisik berlebih mempercepat penuaan karena meningkatkan produksi radikal bebas yang dapat menyebabkan stres oksidatif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan bahwa pemberian ekstrak floret pisang raja (Musa x paradisiaca) dapat mencegah penurunan kadar SOD pada hati mencit (Mus musculus) BALB/c dengan aktivitas fisik berlebih. Jenis penelitian ialah eksperimental murni dengan post test only control group design. Subjek penelitian ialah 36 ekor mencit (Mus Musculus) BALB/c, jantan, berumur 12 minggu, berat badan 20-22 gr, yang dibagi menjadi dua kelompok masing-masing berjumlah 18 ekor mencit. Kelompok kontrol (P0) diberikan plasebo berupa aquadest sebanyak 1 ml dengan aktivitas fisik berlebih selama 14 hari, dan kelompok perlakuan (P1) diberikan ekstrak floret pisang raja (Musa x paradisiaca) dosis 400 mg/kgBB mencit per hari dicampur aquadest hingga 1 ml dengan aktivitas fisik berlebih selama 14 hari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan rerata kadar SOD jaringan hati pada kelompok kontrol (P0) sesudah perlakuan (post-test) ialah 568,82±9,558 U/mg protein, sedangkan pada kelompok perlakuan (P1) ialah 588,37± 10,629 U/mg protein. Analisis kemaknaan dengan T-Independent mendapatkan nilai t= -5,804 dan nilai P = 0,000 yang menunjukkan bahwa sesudah perlakuan (post-test), kadar SOD jaringan hati pada kedua kelompok berbeda sangat bermakna. Simpulan: Ekstrak floret pisang raja (Musa x paradisiaca) dapat mencegah penurunan kadar SOD pada hati mencit (Mus musculus) BALB/c dengan aktivitas fisik berlebih.Kata kunci: floret pisang raja, SOD, hati, aktivitas fisik berlebih

Background: Tamoxifen (TMX) has proven to be effective in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. However, long-term use of TMX is associated with hepatic steatosis, oxidative liver injury and hepatocarcinoma. Buchholzia coriacea seeds (BCS) have been widely applied in traditional medicine due to their nutritional and therapeutic potentials. This study investigates the protective effect of hydroethanolic extract of (defatted) B. coriacea seeds (HEBCS) against TMX–induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Methods: Thirty-six (36) male albino rats were divided into six groups (n = 6/group). Group I served as control. Group II received 50 mg/kg/day TMX orally (p.o.) (TMX) for 21 days, group III received TMX plus 125 mg/kg/d HEBCS p.o. (HEBCS 125) for 21 days, group IV received TMX plus 250 mg/kg/d HEBCS p.o. (HEBCS 250) for 21 days and rats in group V and VI received HEBCS 125 and HEBCS 250 respectively for 21 days. Results: Compared with the control, TMX caused a significant increase (p < 0.05) in serum hepatic function biomarkers: alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase by 57%, 60% and 68% respectively. TMX also caused a significant increase in hepatic triglycerides level by 166% when compared with control and a significant decrease in serum HDL-cholesterol level by 37%. Compared with control, hepatic marker of inflammation, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) increased significantly by 220%, coupled with significant increase in expression of interleukin 6 and cyclooxygenase 2. There was also significant increase in levels of Biomarkers of oxidative stress, nitric oxide, malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls in the TMX group by 89%, 175% and 114% respectively when compared with the control. Hepatic antioxidants, reduced glutathione (GSH) level and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) decreased significantly in the TMX group by 35%, 67%, 41%, 59% and 53% respectively when compared with the control. However, HEBCS at 250 mg/kg significantly protected against TMX–induced hepatotoxicity by decreasing hepatic triglyceride content, serum hepatic function biomarkers, hepatic inflammation and oxidative stress with significant improvement in hepatic antioxidant system. Histopathological findings show that HEBCS alleviate TMX–induced hepatocyte ballooning. Conclusions: Current data suggest that HEBCS protected against TMX–induced hepatotoxicity in rats. HEBCS may be useful in managing TMX–induced toxicities in breast cancer patients. It may also be helpful against other forms of liver injury involving steatosis, inflammation, free radicals, and oxidative damage.

Background: Oxidative stress induced cancer cell formation. Gene polymorphism plays roles in carcinogen metabolism, antioxidant and DNA repairing pathway was susceptibility to oxidative stress. This study aim to determine the association between CAT-21 A/T polymorphism with breast cancer susceptibility. Methods: Case control study was conducted on 65 breast cancer patient and 65 healthy control group. The whole blood samples were isolated from 65 breast cancer patients in Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan and 65 healthy control group. The CAT-21A/T polymorphism was analyzed by PCR-RFLP procedure. PCR-RFLP product was electrophoresed and visualized in agarose 4%. Results:The AA CAT-21 genotype were lower in breast cancer (BC) than healthy control (HC) group (31/47.7% vs 40/61.5%), in the contrary AT+TT genotype was greater in BC than HC group (34/52.3% vs 25/38.5%) with (p=0.159, OR=1.755, CI=0.874–3.525). A allele CAT-21 were found lower in BC than HC group (89/68.5% vs 105/80.8%) then T allele were greater in BC than HC group (41/31.5% vs 25/19.2%) with (p=0.033, OR=1.935;CI=1.022-3.428). Conclusions: There was significant difference in allele distribution of CAT-21 A/T between case and control group but no in genotype distribution. In this population study showed that allele of CAT -21 A/T polymorphism could represent as a risk factor to breast cancer. Bangladesh J Medicine July 2021; 32(2) : 79-84

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the impact of an information leaflet about the risk-benefit balance of breast cancer screening on women’s participation.Methods: This randomized controlled study was conducted within a population-based breast cancer screening program and included women from the catchment areas of two hospitals in Barcelona, Spain. We evaluated women aged 50-69 years invited to screening between September 2019 and January 2020. One hospital attended a population with a lower socioeconomic status than the other. The intervention group received an information leaflet on the benefits and harms of mammography screening. The control group received the usual invitation letter. We compared the participation rate between groups, stratified by hospital and by per-protocol and intention-to-treat analyses. Results: We included 11,119 women in the study: 5,416 in the intervention group and 5,703 in the control group. A total of 36.4% (1,964/5,393) of the women in the intervention group and 37.5% (2,135/5,694) of those in the control group attended screening, respectively. Overall, we found no differences in participation among groups (difference in participation -1.1%; 95% CI; -2.9% to 0.7%, p-value=0.240). In the hospital attending a population with a low socioeconomic status, attendance was lower in the intervention group (-1.4%, 95% CI: -5.7% to -0.03%, p-value=0.029). In the per-protocol analysis, participation was lower in the intervention group (-2.6%, 95% CI: -4.6% to -0.5%, p-value=0.015). Conclusions: Overall participation in our program was unaffected by a new information leaflet on the risk-benefit balance of breast cancer screening. However, participation was lower in certain populations with lower socioeconomic status.

Lead (Pb) is an abundant and one of the most lethal metals found in the earth’s crust. Its use by humans dates back to thousands of year. Even the low doses of lead are responsible for the production of reactive oxygen species which leads to oxidative load. This oxidative stress mitigates production of malondialdehyde (MDA) and down regulates antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD). Study Design: Quasi experimental Study. Place and duration of study: Department of Biochemistry, ANMCH, Islamabad, Pakistan in collaboration with NIH, Islamabad from November, 2018 to April, 2019. Methodology: A total of 40 BALB/c mice were divided into two groups of 20 mice each. Group  was given normal standard diet. Group  was given lead acetate in drinking water with normal diet without any supplementation. Levels of malondialdehyde were measured by using Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) was estimated by xanthine oxidase method at the end of study. Results: The results of our study showed increase in MDA and decrease in SOD in lead treated group when compared with the control group. Pearson correlation was applied to assess the degree of association between two parameters, it showed significant negative correlation with value of r = -0.96 and p-value of 0.001 Conclusion: It was concluded from our study that increase in MDA leads to decrease in SOD indicating strong negative correlation in lead poisoned mice. Previous studies have indicated that semen of heat-stressed bulls shows impaired mitochondrial activity and high levels of oxidative stress, which may cause structural damage to biomolecules, DNA, lipids, carbohydrates and proteins, as well as other cellular components (Nichi et al. 2006 Theriogenology 66, 822–828). Disruption of the sperm mitochondria could have a potential damaging effect not only on an individual sperm cell but also on the surrounding cells, especially regarding the sperm membrane, possibly due to the release of a high amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced in this environment (rich in electrons) that would then lead to oxidative stress. To test this hypothesis, semen samples of 11 Simmental bulls kept in tropical environments were collected during the summer months. Semen was evaluated as follows: the 3-3′ diaminobenzidine stain (DAB) as an index of mitochondrial activity, the hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOST) as an index of membrane integrity, measurement of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) as an index of lipid peroxidation, and measurement of the enzymatic antioxidants superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities. For correlation analysis, the Pearson test was used (variables were transformed when necessary), and for nonparametric variables, the Spearman rank test was used. A high positive correlation was found between sperm cells with highly active mitochondria (DAB class I) and the percentage of cells with intact membrane by HOST (r = 0.93; P < 0.05), and a negative correlation between the latter and the percentage of inactive mitochondria (r = –0.91; P < 0.05), indicating that the higher the percentage of cells showing impaired mitochondrial activity, the higher the percentage of cells with damaged membrane. There was also a positive correlation between TBARS and the percentage of cells with disrupted mitochondria (r = 0.86; P < 0.05), indicating that the higher the percentage of sperm with impaired mitochondrial activity, the higher the oxidative stress. No correlation existed between the enzymatic antioxidants and any of the variables studied. The results indicate that heat stress may lead to an increase in testicular ROS levels, overcoming the seminal antioxidant protection. This, in turn, may cause damage of the mitochondria and a subsequent release of more pro-oxidative substances, and an exponential increase of oxidative stress. Understanding these mechanisms may lead to more tailored antioxidant therapies in the future. The authors thank FAPESP for the scholarship and financial support.

Objective: Women with breast cancer suffer from considerable stress related to the diagnosis, surgery, and medical treatment. It is important to develop strategies to strengthen coping resources among these women. Research in art therapy has shown outcomes such as an increase in self-esteem and cohesion, significant improvement in global health, and a decrease in anxiety and depression. The aim of the present article was to describe the effects of an art therapy intervention program on coping resources in women with primary breast cancer.Method: In this article, we report some of the results from a study including 41 women, aged 37–69 years old, with nonmetastatic primary breast cancer, referred to the Department of Oncology at Umeå University Hospital in Sweden for postoperative radiotherapy. The women represented various socioeconomic backgrounds. They were randomized to a study group (n = 20) with individual art therapy for 1 h/week during postoperative radiotherapy or to a control group (n = 21). The article focuses on changes in coping resources, as measured by the Coping Resources Inventory (CRI) before and 2 and 6 months after the start of radiotherapy. The study protocol was approved by the Umeå University Ethical Committee at the Medical Faculty (archive number 99–386).Results: There was an overall increase in coping resources among women with breast cancer after taking part in the art therapy intervention. Significant differences were seen between the study and control groups in the social domain on the second and third occasions. Significant differences were also observed in the total score on the second occasion.Significance of results: This study shows that individual art therapy provided by a trained art therapist in a clinical setting can give beneficial support to women with primary breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy, as it can improve their coping resources.
