In this paper, the analysis of cracking due to tensile stress in a reinforced concrete pipe is presented. The tensile strength of concrete in case of the member of a high relative curvature is significantly different from the strength of uncurved elements. The current state of research indicates that only methods of nonlinear fracture mechanics lead to a satisfactory agreement between the results of calculations and experimental studies, and allow for compiling correctly the influence of basic parameters of stretched concrete and geometrical dimensions on the load capacity of crush pipes made from concrete. Obtaining consistent results of experimental and numerical research is still a very complicated issue. This paper presents the results of the experimental investigation performed on three pipes and the numerical model of the analysed element of the pipes made using the ATENA (Advanced Tool for Engineering Nonlinear Analysis) program. The numerical analyses of cracks were compared with the results of experimental studies.

Abstract Background A series of nonlinear finite element (FE) analyses was performed to evaluate the different design approaches available in the literature for design of reinforced concrete deep beam with large opening. Three finite element models were developed and analyzed using the computer software ATENA. The three FE models of the deep beams were made for details based on three different design approaches: (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978), (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006), and Strut and Tie method (STM) as per ACI 318-14 (ACI318 Committee, Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI318-14), 2014). Results from the FE analyses were compared with the three approaches to evaluate the effect of different reinforcement details on the structural behavior of transfer deep beam with large opening. Results The service load deflection is the same for the three models. The stiffnesses of the designs of (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006) and STM reduce at a load higher than the ultimate design load while the (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978) reduces stiffness at a load close to the ultimate design load. The deep beam designed according to (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006) model starts cracking at load higher than the beam designed according to (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978) method. The deep beam detailed according to (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978) and (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006) failed due to extensive shear cracks. The specimen detailed according to STM restores its capacity after initial failure. The three models satisfy the deflection limit. Conclusion It is found that the three design approaches give sufficient ultimate load capacity. The amount of reinforcement given by both (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006) and (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978) is the same. The reinforcement used by the STM method is higher than the other two methods. Additional reinforcement is needed to limit the crack widths. (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, (2006)) method gives lesser steel reinforcement requirement and higher failure load compared to the other two methods.

A combined experimental and numerical analysis on the seismic behavior of short reinforced concrete columns with different structural sizes and axial compression ratios

The results of an experimental program on eight short reinforced concrete columns having different structural sizes and axial compression ratios subjected to monotonic/cyclic lateral loading were reported. A 3D mesoscopic simulation method for the analysis of mechanical properties of reinforced concrete members was established, and then it was utilized as an important supplement and extension of the traditional experimental method. Lots of numerical trials, based on the restricted experimental results and the proposed 3D mesoscopic simulation method, were carried out to sufficiently evaluate the seismic performances of short reinforced concrete columns with different structural sizes and axial compression ratios. The test results indicate that (1) the failure pattern of reinforced concrete columns can be significantly affected by the shear-span ratio; (2) increasing the axial compression ratio could improve the load capacity of the reinforced concrete column, but the deformation capacity would be restricted and the failure mode would be more brittle, consequently the energy dissipation capacity could be deteriorated; and (3) the load capacity, the displacement ductility, and the energy dissipation capacity of the short reinforced concrete columns all exhibit clear size effect, namely, the size effect could significantly affect the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete columns.

The responses of flat reinforced concrete (RC) floor slabs with openings subjected to horizontal in-plane cyclic loads in addition to vertical service loads were investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA). A finite element model (FEM) was designed to perform a parametric analysis. The effects of opening sizes (7%, 14%, 25%, and 30% of the total area of the slab), opening shapes (elliptical, circular, L-shaped, T-shaped, cross, and rectangular), and location on the hysteretic behavior of the floor slab were considered. The research indicated that openings in RC floor slabs reduce the energy absorption capacity and stiffness of the floor slab. The inclusion of 30% opening on the floor slab causes a 68.5%, 47.3%, and 45.6% drop in lateral load capacity, stiffness, and lateral displacement, respectively, compared to the floor slab with no openings. The flat RC floor slab with a circular opening shape has increased efficiency. The placement of the openings is more desirable by positioning the openings at the intersection of two-column strips.

In this research, an experimental study is conducted to investigate the behavior and strength of high strength reinforced concrete corbels externally bonded with CFRP fabric sheets and Plates with different patterns taking into account the effect of adopted variables in enhancing the ultimate strength; the effect of shear span to effective depth (a/d), configuration, type and amount of bonding. Eleven high strength reinforced corbels were cast and tested under vertical loads. Test results showed there was an improvement in the behavior and load carrying capacity of all strengthened corbels. An increasing in the ultimate strength of strengthened corbel by inclined CFRP strips reached to (92.1%) while the increasing reached to (84.21%) for using one horizontal CFRP Plates compared to un-strengthened reference specimen. Also, it can be conducted that the increase of (a/d) ratio from (0.6 to 0.8) resulted in decreasing by 21.05% in ultimate load capacity of corbels and from (0.4 to 0.6) by 31.25% and 58.69% in cracking and ultimate loads respectively Using CFRP .

ABSTRACTThe increasing use of polymeric reinforcements in concrete structures requires either the development of a new design theory or the adaptation of current designs considering the engineering properties of this type of materials. In this work a method for calculating the deflections of reinforced concrete elements is proposed, which can be used in predicting the flexural behavior of longitudinally reinforced concrete with PET strips in amounts up to 1%. The model theory assumes that concrete has a tensile load capacity different to zero, characterized by a uniaxial tensile stress-strain diagram. A series of tests were conducted to corroborate the validity of the suggested method, showing that the theory also correctly predicts the creep deformation post-cracking. The deflection results of reinforced concrete with recycled PET strips are presented. The tests are carried out by a simple beam with center-point loading, using three different amounts of reinforcement and comparing the experimental results with the theoretical results of the proposed model.

Two 1/6 scale core walls, including one RC core wall with steel tube-reinforced concrete columns and concealed steel trusses and one conventional RC core wall, were tested under eccentric horizontal cyclic loading. The load-capacity, ductility, hysteresis characteristics, stiffness, stiffness deterioration process, energy dissipation and damage characteristics of the two specimens were compared and discussed in this paper. It shows that the seismic performance of the RC core walls under combined action could be improved by setting the concealed steel trusses in the walls and using the steel tube-reinforced concrete columns as the boundary elements.
