Most research indicates that there is an early beginning of sexual relations among young people, a fact that makes them susceptible to risky practices as it is demonstrated by the growing percentage of unwanted pregnancies and the rate of IVES among youngsters under 18 years old. Information and education on sexual health are of relevant importance for the prevention of a risky sexual behavior among young people. In previous studies it has been demonstrated that there is a significant lack of knowledge regarding contraceptive methods too. The current work aims at learning about the sexual behaviors of young people as well as about the basic knowledge they should have about contraceptive methods so as to elaborate efficient intervention and prevention programs. The participants were between 17 and 23 years old. Their first sexual relations were at 16.5 years old, as an average, a figure that is coincident with that of other studies. 85% of the college students being surveyed had had complete sexual relations. Among them, a significant percentage had a risky sexual behavior. Regarding the knowledge they have of contraceptive methods, there is no significant difference between genders. There is lack of knowledge of essential aspects of this area.

This two-wave longitudinal study examined risky sexual scripts and sexual behavior regarding consensual sexual interactions, sexual self-esteem, initiation assertiveness, and religiosity as predictors of sexual aggression perpetration in a cross-cultural comparison of college students in Chile and Turkey. As predicted, risky sexual scripts were linked to higher odds of perpetration through more risky sexual behavior cross-sectionally in both the Chilean and the Turkish sample and indirectly predicted perpetration 12 months later. High sexual self-esteem increased the likelihood of perpetration via higher initiation assertiveness in the Turkish sample only. High religiosity reduced the odds of perpetration through less risky sexual scripts and less risky sexual behavior in both samples. In addition, high religiosity increased the probability of perpetration through lower sexual self-esteem in the Turkish sample. Implications of these findings and the role of cultural factors contributing to the differential functioning of religiosity and sexual self-esteem are discussed.

Although dating applications (apps) have become popular among young adults, there is a dearth of information regarding the sexual health implications among Brazilian college students. This study examined risky sexual behavior and attitudes of dating app users, based on their sex in Brazil’s Legal Amazon. Three hundred and fifty-nine students reported their sociodemographic data, dating app use, and sexual behaviors and attitudes through self-administered questionnaires. Bivariate analyses and analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Bonferroni post-hoc tests were performed. Dating app use was reported by 238 (66.3%) subjects, most of whom had an encounter and sex with a casual partner. Women frequently requested condom use. Trust in one’s partner or having repeated encounters were the main reasons for engaging in risky sexual behavior. Men had a greater number of sexual partners and less protective attitudes. Sexual health awareness by apps was not reported by 97% of women, and most of them were not tested for sexually transmitted infections. A positive attitude toward sexual health was not a predictor of safe sex. Important similarities and differences regarding risky sexual behaviors and attitudes were observed between the sexes, many of which correlated with increased sexual vulnerability during the sexual encounters arranged through the dating apps. This cross-sectional study supports efforts on sexual health promotion and sexual education implementation in the face of growing usage of apps among young adults for sexual matters.
