This paper deals with the symbolic-aesthetic dimension of industrial and technical structures as a possible category for classifying and evaluating such structures. This category should play an important role in assessing the value of industrial and technical structures so that they are thoroughly and properly assessed as a part of our cultural heritage. This paper was presented at the XIII International TICCIH Congress in Terni in 2006.

Abstract The Elbe-Vltava Waterway (EVW) consists of continuously navigable sections of the Vltava and Elbe rivers in the Czech Republic comprising a total length of over 300 km. Most of the length of this waterway was obtained by building a system of interconnected weir basins using the canalization method. Detailed plans for making this waterway navigable started in the early 19th century, and the construction of the structures was enabled by the Austro-Hungarian Water Act of 1869. So, most locks along this waterway constitute a part of industrial heritage. Among its main structures are weirs, hydroelectric power stations and locks designed by pre-eminent Czech architects of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Many of them are excellent examples of modernist industrial architecture. Since the beginning of construction of the weir system along the EVW, bridge construction also came into focus in order to provide transportation access to both banks of the Elbe and Vltava rivers in this historically heavily urbanised area of Bohemia. This article deals with the historical development of bridge constructions over the EVW, systematically categorising them as road, railway and pedestrian bridges. Focus is on the basic technical aspects of the bridge design and technical solution, but also on their historical value and the need for a sensitive approach to their modernisation. The goal of the research is to complete the current web application www.lvvc.cz devoted to the EVW structures with the architectonically and technically most interesting bridges, including their histories. The system has been designed as an expert system, making the archived historical documents, maps, plans and photographs available for use by government institutions as well as by the general public for education and for the protection of this technical cultural heritage. The research was conducted as part of project no. DG18P02OVV004 entitled “Documentation and presentation of technical cultural heritage along the Elbe-Vltava Waterway” within a support programme for applied research and experimental development of national and cultural identity, funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

Abstract Ancient coppice woodlands are forest stands of coppice origin with a long-term continual development and preserved typical natural and historic elements of old coppices. Significant natural elements in ancient coppices include polycormons of coppice shoots, pollard trees, trees with holes, dendrotelms, reserved trees, ecotones, glades and significant plant and animal species. Significant historic elements of localities with ancient coppices include archaeological monuments, boundary ditches and walls, boundary stones, boundary trees, myths and legends, sacral objects, old roads and paths, technical objects and plough land remainders. The paper presents differentiation of assumptions for the occurrence of ancient coppices in the territory of the Czech Republic using the COPF coefficient and examples of results from basic regional inventory (Kuřim region) and detailed local survey (locality Lebeďák) of coppice-originated forests. The extinction of the phenomenon of ancient coppice woodlands would mean irreparable impoverishment of the natural and cultural heritage.

The paper focuses on rural immovable cultural heritage as a part of the infrastructure for certain forms of tourism. Using the secondary analysis method, it compares data about the support of rural cultural heritage in the pre-accession period (2002) and after the Czech Republic joined the EU (2004–2006). Conclusions include a broader issue of animation of cultural heritage for the purpose of rural development.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Most of the state bureaus and ministries in the Czech Republic are located in the capital city Prague. The buildings are situated mostly in historical part of the city, where are high demands on compliance with the cultural heritage laws. Currently, the buildings are in unsatisfactory building conditions, their maintenance is expensive and due to complicated legislation and political processes the buildings are in a state of “permanent repairs”. More than twenty years our company operates and co-develops GIS/BIM application for facility management of administrative buildings in the Czech Republic. The main topics of this contribution is to present our general experiences in GIS and BIM development which is based on our concrete cases dealt with Czech ministries, to present basic legislation requirements in Czech facility management and to evaluate current trends in the field of GIS and BIM for facility management in the Czech Republic in response to other official state registries.</p>

The article deals with the architectural proposal of the outdoorexhibition of Archeopark Pavlov, which is the result of the cooperationof students and tutors of Mendel University in Brno with the RegionalMuseum in Mikulov and the Archaeological Institute of the Academy ofSciences of the Czech Republic, Brno. The ideas and principles of inter-pretation of cultural heritage were used in the proposal. The purpose ofthe article is to describe a design process of an outdoor exhibition in-volving various professional professions – landscaping architect, archae-ologist and museum employees. Secondly it describes how the ideas andprinciples of interpretation of cultural heritage were implemented in theproject. The outdoor permanent exhibition is made up of plant design,paving and interactive elements and provides space for experimental andeducational activities. Every feature of the exhibition is described in de-tail and contains a commentary on how to act on the visitor.

This contribution deals with experimental corrosion tests carried out on the weathering steel railway bridge in Prague. The basic specific property of the weathering steel is an ability to create in favourable environment a protective patina layer on its surface. Since 1968 weathering steel is used under the name “Atmofix” in the Czech Republic and can be used as a standard structural material without any corrosion protection. The weathering steel Atmofix is mostly used for bridge structures and lattice transmission towers. Some of these constructions built in the Czech Republic have been assessed and inspected in the last few years. Authors of this paper developed a new methodology of non-destructive experimental testing of corrosion processes. Testing specimens are installed on typical surfaces of steel bridges in such a way to simulate real conditions of the examined surface. This paper describes results of corrosion tests (thickness of corrosion products, corrosion losses and X-Ray analysis) after one-year exposure, correlation factor and dependence of location.

The cultural heritage of the nation is protected by memory institutions, which consist, largely, of museums. One of the largest cultural institutions in Slovakia is the Slovak National Museum. Its archive has become a permanent source of information both on the institutional development of this longest continuously operating national cultural institution and the development of museum management in Slovakia. The article provides a brief overview of accessible archival sources on the history of the Slovak National Museum and, moreover, recalls the merits of some important personalities from the Czech Republic working in the field of preservation for Slovakia’s cultural heritage.

The editorial series Bibliotheca Tessinensis, founded in 2004, is devoted to publishing the unknown or hardy accessible source documents related to the history of Cieszyn Silesia from the Middle Ages to the present, as well as the sources of universal significance, which are stored in Cieszyn Silesia and constitute the abiding component of the cultural heritage of the region. The title of the series harks back to the edition of the bio- and bibliographical materials, planned to be edited by Leopold Jan Szersznik (1747-1814); in the publishers’ intention it grounds the series in the historiographical tradition of the region, giving it also a supranational character and outreach. Accordingly, the Bibliotheca Tessinensis is being issued in two subseries – one of them (Series Polonica) published by Książnica Cieszyńska (the Cieszyn Historical Library), and the other (Series Bohemica) – by Ośrodek Dokumentacyjny Kongresu Polaków w Republice Czeskiej (the Documentation Centre of the Congress of Poles in the Czech Republic). The consecutive volumes of both subseries, issued independently of each other, depending on the organiza tional and financial possibilities of the publishers, are prepared according to the common editorial instruction, have the same layout, and are numbered sequentially within the whole series.
