The article presents a dual-camera vision system for fatigue monitoring composed of a vision unit, a camera positioning set and a computer unit. Vision modules are mounted onto the 4DOF positioning sets, which allows for an easy determination of the position of the camera in relation to the sample. The application of motorized measurement lenses with changeable configuration, thanks to the alteration of the distance of observation and the vision angle, enables the adaptation of the system to different scales of observation of the fatigue processes in the specimen surface. Automatic focus setting is realised with the use of the implemented algorithm. The software developed allows for the analysis of fatigue fracture for two 2D images or the 3D stereovision image.

Abstract Close cell structured foams are made by incorporation of cenospheres in polymeric materials. Low moisture absorption characteristics and considerably higher compressive strength of these materials compared to open cell structured foams make them suitable for use as core materials in sandwich structured materials. Incorporation of cenospheres in the epoxy resins enhances their impact strength and damage tolerance, especially if these materials are used in sandwich configurations. Present study analyzes and compares the effect of incorporation of cenospheres like flyash and glass microballoons in the epoxy resins on the deformation and fracture behavior of the material. Approach based on determination of local stress intensity factors is used to obtain estimate of the stresses in the material.

The fatigue lifetime of the structure in operation is express in the number of working cycles, kilometers or time depending units. By harmonic process of loading is possible to express the safety margin as reserve against the required lifetime in the form of number cycles or amplitude of loading. By nonharmonic character of loading process in operation is difficult to express the level of safety margin as the reserve of loading (safety margin in loading). On the case of towing trailer will be discussed more ways of expression the reserve (safety margin) of structure against the fatigue fracture for required fatigue lifetime. For experimental acquired loading process in the most loaded cross-section will be discussed concept of determination of the level safety as reserve in the form of loading parameters. In the case, when the peaks of loading process exceeding the material yield stress (in the most loaded point of the structure) will be discussed concept of expression of loading in the form of time-varying process of strain. By using the cyclic material properties obtained in mode with controlled total strain is possible the safety margin to express also as the multiple of process loading parameters.

The assessment of the residual lifetime of critical components of industrial plants requires the knowledge of mechanical properties prior to operation, respecting all technological operations realized throughout the manufacture of the component, and the knowledge of mechanical properties after actual time of operation (actual mechanical properties). Small Punch (SP) test technique enables measurement of the realistic material properties at the critical locations in the component both prior and after long-term operation. The paper shows the examples of the sampling of testing material from the critical components of the industrial plants and the procedures for determination of tensile and fracture characteristics by SP tests at ambient and low temperatures. The special attention is devoted to the test specimen orientation for determination of SP fracture energy ESP.

Background and objectives: In this study, the accuracy of point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) was compared to radiography (XR) in the diagnosis of fractures, the determination of characteristics of the fractures, and treatment selection of fractures in patients admitted to the emergency department (ED) due to trauma and suspected long bone (LB) fractures. Materials and Methods: The patients were included in the study, who were admitted to ED due to trauma, and had physical examination findings suggesting the presence of fractures in LB (humerus, radius, ulna, femur, tibia, and fibula). The patients were evaluated by two emergency physicians (EP) in ED. The first EP examined LBs with POCUS and the second EP examined them with XR. LBs were evaluated on the anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral surfaces and from the proximal joint to the distal one (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle joint) in both longitudinal and transverse axes with POCUS. Results: A total of 205 patients with suspected LB fractures were included in the study. LB fractures were determined in 99 patients with XR and in 105 patients with POCUS. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value of POCUS in determining the fractures were 99%, 93%, 93%, and 99%, respectively, compared to XR. Compared to XR, POCUS was able to determine 100% of fissure type fractures (kappa (κ) value: 0.765), 83% of linear fractures (κ: 0.848), 92% of fragmented fractures(κ: 0.756), 67% of spiral fractures (κ:0.798), 75% of avulsion type fractures (κ: 0.855), and 100% of full separation type fractures (κ: 0.855).Conclusions: This study has demonstrated that POCUS has a high sensitivity in diagnosing LB fractures. POCUS has a high sensitivity in identifying fracture characteristics. POCUS can be used as an alternative imaging method to XR in the diagnosis of LB fractures and in the determination of fracture characteristics.

This paper contains data of the research project FVA 293 III by Schurer et al. and investigates the tooth root bending strength and the fatigue fracture characteristics of case-carburized and shot-peened gears of different sizes. The investigated carburized and shot-peened gears are made out of high-purity steel batches of the materials 20MnCr5 and 18CrNiMo7-6. Three different gear sizes with the normal modules mn = 1.5, 5, and 10 mm are examined in pulsator test rigs. Additionally, gear running tests in the FZG back-to-back gear test rigs for the gear size mn = 1.5 are performed.
