<p>Ultra‐high performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced construction material that affords opportunities to innovate the structures made of conventional concrete (NC). The one‐way UHPC‐NC hybrid slab, designed to have the UHPC layer in tension and the NC layer in compression, can be an optimal use of UHPC for bridge deck. The analytical solutions for normal stress are essential under service limit state, but they cannot be found in the literature by now. Based on the elastic theory, analytical formulas for the neutral axis position and flexural stress are derived. The lowest neutral axis position is attained when the UHPC layer thickness ratio (UHPC layer thickness / hybrid slab thickness) approximates 0.4. The criteria to judge the position of neutral axis within UHPC or NC region are analytically established. To find out the ideal scenario to reach the allowable compressive stress in NC and allowable tensile stress in UHPC simultaneously, an inequality constraint with the elastic modulus ratio is proposed. Considering the UHPC tensile stress limitation and flexural moment capacity of the hybrid slab, the rational thickness ratio of UHPC layer of 0.4 is suggested, which can achieve better economy and efficiency of the hybrid slab.</p>

Owing to continuously changing strength moduli properties, functionally graded concrete (FGC) has remarkable advantages over the traditional homogeneous concrete materials regarding cement optimization. Some researchers have studied mechanical behaviors and production methodologies. Problems arise as to how to incorporate the effects of the non-homogeneity of concrete strengths in the analysis for design. For a steel Reinforced Functionally Graded Concrete (RFGC) beam structure, the associated boundary conditions at both ends have to be at the neutral axis position after the occurrence of the presumed cracks. Because the neutral axis is no longer at the mid-plane of the beam crosssection, an iterative procedure has to be implemented. The procedure is somewhat complicated since the strength of the beam cross section has to be integrated due to the non-homogeneity in concrete strengths. This paper proposes an analytical procedure that is very straightforward and simple in concept, but accurate in designing the steel reinforced functionally graded concrete beam cross-sections.

With the structural health monitoring technique, several medium- and small-span bridges possessing the same or similar structural characteristics located in a local road network are simultaneously monitored within one cluster. Nevertheless, insufficient research has been performed on detecting the damage of all the bridges monitored within one cluster under time-varying environmental temperatures. To address this issue, a method is proposed to assess the damage in all the bridges within one cluster utilizing the residual between the cumulative distribution functions of strain monitoring data. First, an algorithm for reconstructing the strain monitoring dataset is introduced, effectively improving the computational efficiency at removing as much measured noise from a large amount of monitoring data as possible. Second, a cluster analysis algorithm considering the similarity among the strain monitoring data at different measured points is proposed to classify the strain monitoring data for all the bridges monitored within one cluster. Different classes of strain monitoring data are established by identifying similar probability distribution patterns. Third, for each class, a damage detection index is proposed based on the residual between the cumulative distribution functions of strain monitoring data. All the bridges monitored within one cluster are acted upon by similar environmental temperatures during the same monitoring period; hence, the effects of the environmental temperature on the proposed index are mitigated indirectly during the same monitoring period. Thus, the proposed index is implemented to effectively detect the damage in all the bridges belonging to each class. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through a numerical simulation and with strain monitoring data obtained from actual bridges.

A 3×3 coupler based Mach-Zehnder Interferometer is used for delamination patch detection in FRP composite. Mechanical tests are performed and the sensing arm of the interferometer is embedded along the neutral plane of the laminate. A quasi-impulse loading is applied and the total elongation of the embedded optical fiber is measured as a function of load position. When a delamination is present, the shift of neutral axis position can be clearly reflected in the fiber integral strain versus load position plot. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of detecting both the size and location of delamination patch with the proposed technique.
