Resumo Normas relacionadas à gestão de Resíduos de Construção Civil (RCC) estão vigentes no Brasil há mais de uma década. O intuito dessa gestão é amenizar os impactos ambientais decorrentes do gerenciamento indevido desses resíduos. O objetivo do presente trabalho é investigar a conformidade técnica e legal de sistemas de gerenciamento de resíduos de construção civil no município de Curitiba. Para tal, elaborou-se uma lista de verificação baseada nas normas em vigor e em alguns modelos de certificações ambientais, como: LEED, AQUA, CASBEE, BREAM e HQE. 24 obras de edifícios residenciais e comerciais foram  visitadas — com ou sem certificação ambiental. Essa lista de verificação foi aplicada nas construções, para realizar um diagnóstico do setor. Apesar da gestão de resíduos ser obrigatória e restritiva à obtenção dos certificados de conclusão de obra, os resultados da pesquisa demonstraram que há problemas na segregação, acondicionamento e transporte dos resíduos. Entretanto, a falta de conscientização e a aparente conformidade documental não se traduz em efetivo gerenciamento dos RCC. Palavras-chave: Resíduos de construção e demolição. Gestão de resíduos. Resíduos sólidos. Auditorias ambientais. Abstract Standards related to the management of Construction Waste (CW) have been in force in Brazil for more than a decade. The goal of this management is to alleviate the environmental impacts resulting from the poor management of these wastes. The objective of this work is to investigate the technical and legal compliance of construction waste management systems in the city of Curitiba. To this end, a checklist was drawn up based on current standards and on some models of environmental certifications, such as: LEED, AQUA, CASBEE, BREAM and HQE. 24 works of residential and commercial buildings were visited — with or without environmental certification.  A checklist was applied, in these buildings, to promote a diagnosis of the sector. Although waste management is mandatory and restrictive to obtain building completion certificates, the research results showed that there are problems in the segregation, packaging and transport of waste. However, the lack of awareness and the apparent documentary compliance does not translate into effective management of the CW. Keywords:  Construction and demolition waste. Waste management. The adaptation to the regulation of hospitality business implies a relevant cost in the profit and loss account. Additionally, some companies in this business decide to add some voluntary quality and environmental certification systems, which also yields to increased costs. The purpose of this paper is to quantify these costs and to analyse if the hotel size influences them. A total of 67 different costs were considered in hotels of all sizes, in the region of Catalonia as one of the most relevant touristic markets in Europe. Data were collected from the regulation applied to the hospitality sector, from specialised consultant companies and from a questionnaire supplied to 472 hotels in August and September 2008. The main results of this study show that the unitary cost by room, considering both, compulsory and voluntary costs, is lower in big hotels. On the other side, the smaller hotels are suffering high unitary costs. These results could be useful for the strategic orientation of hotels due to the relevance of costs to determine the competitive position of a firm. The main contribution of this work is to analyse the effects of compulsory costs and voluntary cost derived from the implementation of quality and environmental certifications in the hospitality sector, which could strongly affect the performance of this industry.

Purpose Despite the general interest in the circular economy, organisations have difficulties in implementing circular practices. Developing absorptive capacity (ACAP) may foster circularity among organisations. The paper aims to shed light on relationship between ACAP and organisational performance. Design/methodology/approach To empirically investigate the contribution of ACAP in circular economy implementation, the authors analysed a European sample of more than 800 Eco-Management and Audit Scheme-registered organisations through partial least squares structural equation modelling. Findings The analysis demonstrates that ACAP and the underlying organisational activities of a firm significantly facilitate the implementation of a circular economy and the internalisation of an environmental management system (EMS), which consequently improve the overall performance of organisations. The authors found that the diffusion of the circular economy in the organisations’ environment does not affect their commitment to implement a circular economy. Originality/value The study expands the academic literature by framing the concept of the circular economy with ACAP theory, thereby highlighting the contribution of acquisition, assimilation, transformation and exploitation. The results also provide useful insights for practitioners highlighting how organisations with an environmental certification can identify and pursue opportunities deriving from a circular economy. Finally, the research contributes to the debate on the effect of internalising EMSs and how ACAP improves economic performance, environmental performance and reputation.

It is axiomatic that environmental controls are expressed as environmental standards, a traditional driver of investment in pollution control. Environmental standards spur investment in green technologies that promise to stimulate sustainable business models. The institutional framework of environmental standardization is complex; a widely misunderstood political process. A variety of standardization activities have impacted environmental protection historically and are now poised for further growth as green market discipline proliferates. Environmental standardization is a unique fusion of technology design and public policy development involving various constituencies: environmentalists, technologists, legislatures, regulators, standards-setting bodies, upstream suppliers, downstream users, and society’s affected communities. This chapter reviews the role of standardization activities in setting environmental constraints, in the development of green technologies, and in establishing metrics for environmental certification and monitoring. The implications of managing environmental standardization to attract financing for sustainable business models are so significant that disregarding the risks of environmental standardization imperils competitiveness.
