In order to facilitate the corneal stromal ablation in photorefractive keratectomy the epithelium is removed so corneal repair associated with changes in epithelium and stroma. To study the corneal epithelial thickness and pachymetry profile changes after photorefractive keratec­tomy (PRK) for myopia. Retrospective analysis of the postoperative corneal epithelial thickness and pachymetry profile changes in 22 eyes of 12 patients treated with PRK for myopia or myopic astigmatism. Corneal and epithelial thickness maps within the central 6 mm were obtained by anterior segment spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) preop­eratively and at 3 months postoperatively. Correlations between pachymetry,epithelial thickness changes and the amount of correction,were analyzed.Compared to preoperative values,the central 2 mm and the paracentral 2 to 5 mm zone epithelium was 1 ± 2.85 and 1 ± 3.11 μm thicker,respec­tively,at 3 months postoperatively (P <.05). The spheri­cal equivalent (SE) changed from-2.80 ± 2.028 diop­ters (D) preoperatively to -0.40 ± 0.42 D at 3 months postoperatively. Females show greater postoperative epithelial thickening, 2.6 ± 3.77 μm,than males,0.34 ± 1.98 μm. There was a trend toward greater epithelial thickening with a larger amount of programmed SE correction, and thinner preoperative epithelium. No correlation between epithelial thickness change and postoperative change in refraction was detected.Negative correlation between between age, refractive error,with the pre and post-operative pachymetry. In general female pachymetry reading is higher than it in male.The corneal epithelial thickness in­creased after PRK up to 3 months postoperatively. It was affected by the amount of myopia treated, gender, and preoperative epithelial thickness. The refractive outcomes did not affected by the postoperative epithelial thickening. Negative correlation between between age, refractive error, with the pre and post-operative pachymetry. In general female pachymetry reading is higher than it in male.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Uncorrected refractive errors and amblyopia pose a major problem affecting schoolchildren. We had previously observed that many schoolchildren in the Hatta region presented to the ophthalmology clinic with uncorrected refractive errors and amblyopia, which led us to undertake this research. As per the WHO, the term “visual impairment” can be “low vision” or “blindness.” Based on the presenting vision, “low vision” is defined for children who have vision of &#x3c;6/18 to 3/60 or having visual field loss to &#x3c;20° in the better-seeing eye. Children defined to have “blindness” have presenting vision of &#x3c;3/60 or corresponding visual field of &#x3c;10°. <b><i>Purpose:</i></b> To estimate the magnitude of uncorrected refractive errors and amblyopia among the schoolchildren aged 6–19 years and to assess the efficacy of school-based refractive error screening programs in the Hatta region of the United Arab Emirates. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> An epidemiological, cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted on the entire student population studying in the government schools of the region. Those who failed the Snellen visual acuity chart test and those who were wearing spectacles were evaluated comprehensively by the researcher in the Department of Ophthalmology of the Hatta Hospital. Data were entered in the Refractive Error Study in School Children (RESC) eye examination form recommended by the WHO, and were later transferred to Excel sheets and analyzed by SPSS. <b><i>Results:</i></b> 1,591 students were screened and evaluated from the end of 2016 to mid-2017. About 21.37% (<i>n</i> = 340) had impaired vision with 20.9% (<i>n</i> = 333) refractive errors, of which 58% were uncorrected. Among the refractive error group, 19% (64 subjects) had amblyopia (4% of total students). The incidence of low vision was 9.5% and blindness was 0.38%. Low vision was found to be 9.5% and blindness 0.38%, taking in to account presenting visual acuity rather than best-corrected visual acuity for defining low vision and blindness. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> A significant number of students were detected to have uncorrected refractive errors among the vision impaired group (59%, <i>n</i> = 197) despite a school-based vision screening program in place. Seventy-eight percent of the amblyopia cases (<i>n</i> = 50) were found to be in the 11–19 years age group. Noncompliance with optical corrections was the reason for the high number of cases. A rigorous vision screening program and refractive services, complimented with awareness among parents and teachers, are recommended.

Purpose. To compare the functional and clinical outcomes of the iris-claw intraocular lens (IOL) placed on the anterior versus posterior surface of the iris. Patients and Methods. A multicenter, retrospective study. Data on eyes that underwent anterior or retropupillary iris-claw IOL implantation because of inadequate capsular support secondary to complicated cataract surgery, trauma, and dislocated/opacified IOLs since January 2015 were analyzed. For study inclusion, evaluation results had to be available in the medical records both preoperatively and at 1 and 12 months after implantation. The following parameters were compared between the groups: best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), spherical and cylindrical refractive error, endothelial cell density (ECD), central macular thickness (CMT), and percentage and type of postoperative complications. Results. In total, 60 eyes of 60 patients aged 73 ± 13 years were included: 28 eyes (47%) involved anterior, and 32 eyes (53%) retropupillary, iris-claw IOL fixations. Preoperatively, the groups were similar in all parameters except for a significantly higher proportion of retropupillary fixations in patients who had previously experienced a closed-globe trauma (p=0.03). The groups showed comparable improvements in BCDVA after surgery (final BCDVA: 0.34 ± 0.45 vs. 0.37 ± 0.50 logMAR in the anterior and retropupillary placement groups, respectively). During follow-up, no group difference was observed in refractive error or CMT. Both groups experienced similarly marked ECD loss and showed similar incidence of postoperative complications, with cystoid macular edema being the most common complication. Multivariable linear regression showed that BCDVA at 1 month was the best predictor of the final BCDVA. Conclusions. Anterior chamber and posterior chamber iris-claw IOL fixations proved equally effective and safe for aphakic correction in eyes with inadequate capsular support.
