The properties of UWFC (Ultra Wide-Field Camera) astronomical systems along with specific visual data in astronomical images contribute to a comprehensive evaluation of the acquired image data. These systems contain many different kinds of optical aberrations which have a negatively effect on image quality and imaging system transfer characteristics, and reduce the precision of astronomical measurement. It is very important to figure two main questions out. At first: In which astrometric depend on optical aberrations? And at second: How optical aberrations affect the transfer characteristics of the whole optical system. If we define the PSF (Point Spread Function) [2] of an optical system, we can use some suitable methods for restoring the original image. Optical aberration models for LSI/LSV (Linear Space Invariant/Variant) [2] systems are presented in this paper. These models are based on Seidel and Zernike approximating polynomials [1]. Optical aberration models serve as suitable tool for estimating and fitting the wavefront aberration of a real optical system. Real data from the BOOTES (Burst Observer and Optical Transient Exploring System) experiment is used for our simulations. Problems related to UWFC imaging systems, especially a restoration method in the presence of space variant PSF are described in this paper. A model of the space variant imaging system and partially of the space variant optical system has been implemented in MATLAB. The “brute force” method has been used for restoration of the testing images. The results of different deconvolution algorithms are demonstrated in this paper. This approach could help to improve the precision of astronomic measurements.

Abstract Purpose This study aimed to determine the proportion and types of ocular abnormalities detected in healthy term newborns and also the risk factors associated with retinal haemorrhages. Method This cross-sectional study comprised of 203 participants, all healthy term newborn infants in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology ward at Hospital Kuala Lumpur over a six months period. The examination list includes external eye examination, red reflex test, and fundus imaging using a wide-field digital retinal imaging system (Phoenix Clinical ICON Paediatric Retinal Camera) by a trained Investigator. The pathologies detected were documented. The results were compared with similar studies previously published in the literature. Results Total ocular abnormalities were detected in 34% infants. The most common finding was retinal haemorrhage in 29.6% infants, of which 53.3% occurred bilaterally. Spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD) remained the greatest risk factor which has nearly four times higher risk of newborns developing retinal haemorrhage compared to Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS). There was a 6% increased likelihood of developing retinal haemorrhage for every 1 minute increment in the duration of 2nd stage of labour. Newborns delivered via SVD with episiotomy had 2.5 higher odds of developing retinal haemorrhage in newborns compared to SVD without episiotomy. Conclusion Universal eye screening for all newborns using a wide-field digital imaging system is possible, safe and useful in detecting posterior segment disorders. The most common abnormality detected is retinal haemorrhage. Although most resolve spontaneously, a longitudinal study is needed to study the long term effect of retinal haemorrhages in these infants.

Abstract The presence of a scattering medium in the imaging path between an object and an observer is known to severely limit the visual acuity of the imaging system. We present an approach to circumvent the deleterious effects of scattering, by exploiting spectral correlations in scattered wavefronts. Our Synthetic Wavelength Holography (SWH) method is able to recover a holographic representation of hidden targets with high resolution over a wide field of view. The complete object field is recorded in a snapshot-fashion, by monitoring the scattered light return in a small probe area. This unique combination of attributes opens up a plethora of new Non-Line-of-Sight imaging applications ranging from medical imaging and forensics, to early-warning navigation systems and reconnaissance. Adapting the findings of this work to other wave phenomena will help unlock a wider gamut of applications beyond those envisioned in this paper.
