Abstract A fundamental understanding of how reactor parameters influence the fiber surface temperature is essential to manufacturing high quality optical fiber coatings by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). In an attempt to better understand this process, a finite volume model has been developed to study the gas flow and heat transfer of an optical fiber as it travels through a CVD reactor. This study showed that draw speed significantly affects fiber temperature inside the reactor, with temperature changes up to 45% observed under the conditions studied. Multiple heat transfer modes contribute to this phenomena, with convection heat transfer dominating the process.

AbstractThere is a growing need for optical fiber coatings that can sustain higher temperatures than present materials permit. To date, polyimides are used predominantly but they generally are difficult to process and usually require multiple depositions to achieve the desired film thickness. Perfluorocyclobutyl (PFCB) aryl ether polymers have demonstrated much success as processable and amorphous fluoropolymers,[1] with particular emphasis on high performance optical applications.[2] This work discusses recent efforts into perfluorocyclobutyl aryl ether polymer-based optical fiber coatings.[3] A series of silica-based optical fibers were drawn with differing PFCB polymer coatings compositions and molecular weights on a Heathway draw tower. Results include a more than doubled usage temperature of coating (decomposition temperatures (Td) in nitrogen and air were above 450 °C) without affecting fiber mechanical properties and comparable isothermal stability to conventional coatings, except with a >150 °C higher temperature. Preliminary results of the first successful coating of optical fibers by PFCB polymers will be presented herein, as well as future endeavors.

AbstractThe use of composite materials for aerospace applications has created an increased need for developing nondestructive methods for assessment of composite performance. Embedded optical fiber sensor technology provides the potential for monitoring parameters of interest during processing and testing of composite materials as well as the opportunity for tracking properties over the lifetime of composite parts in service. The successful development of this technology depends on designing optical fiber sensor systems suitable for embedding in composite structures.This paper focuses on the role played by optical fiber coatings in the design of embedded sensor systems. The performance of different optical fiber coatings under typical composite processing conditions will be discussed. Photomicrographs of test specimens containing embedded sensors will be presented which show delamination occurring at the coating/optical fiber interface in preference to the coating/epoxy resin interface. Coating performance criteria will be outlined for use in the selection of fiber optic sensors for composite applications.

AbstractWhile the telecommunications optical fiber technology is in its third decade of growth, and fibers that are aging-resistant and fatigue-resistant are highly desirable, basic physico-chemical aspects of fiber aging and mechanical strength degradation are not well understood. A key difficulty to understanding fiber strength degradation has been the unavailability of tools for direct assessments of the condition of fiber coatings on aged fibers. In this presentation, we report on our studies of the effects of DI-water aging on two experimental high n-value (fatigue-resistant) fibers and their coatings. We have found that the coatings of these high n value fibers are highly resistant to DI-water aging.
