We report a high-power cladding-pumped Er,Yb codoped all-fiber laser with truly single transverse mode output. The fiber laser is designed to operate at 1545 nm by the use of a pair of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) to lock and narrow the output spectrum, which can be very useful in generating the eye-safe ~1650 nm laser emission through the Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) in silica fibers that is of interest in many applications. Two pieces of standard single-mode fibers are inserted into the laser cavity and output port to guarantee the truly single-mode output as well as good compatibility with other standard fiber components. We have obtained a maximum output power of 19.2 W at 1544.68 nm with a FWHM spectral width of 0.08 nm, corresponding to an average overall slope efficiency of 31.9% with respect to the launched pump power. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest output power reported from simple all-fiber single-mode Er,Yb codoped laser oscillator architecture.

A 72 km open-ended symmetrical tunable random distributed feedback fiber laser (RDB-FL) with different pumping schemes is presented in this study. The random distributed feedback was contributed by Rayleigh scattering in the single-mode fiber while distributed gain was provided by the effect of stimulated Raman scattering. The pumping schemes tested with the configuration was outward and inward pumping, where these would be backward and forward pumping in a non-symmetrical configuration of a fiber laser, respectively. The tuning range was also varied in conjunction with the different pumping schemes to determine the optimum performance. Random lasing in the RDB-FL was achieved by utilizing multiple scattering in the disordered gain medium to achieve resonance. With pump power limited to 1.5 W, the best threshold was measured as low as 1.4 W while the highest total output power was at 8 mW. In outward pumping configuration, the wavelengths that are within the maximum Raman gain (1555-1565 nm) show the best peak powers and total output power with a narrow linewidth, as low as 0.25 nm.

In this manuscript, we demonstrate high-power, narrow-linewidth linearly polarized fiber laser with excellent beam quality through compact one-stage amplification scheme. By employing a single-mode–multimode–single-mode structure seed laser, a linearly polarized Yb-doped fiber laser with narrow linewidth and high output power is achieved. This laser, when used as a master oscillator, can be capable of suppressing the ASE in the process of power amplification. Thus, only one-stage amplification structure is used to scale up the laser power, and linearly polarized output with a polarization extinction ration of 14 dB, a narrow linewidth of 0.3 nm and an output power of 1018 W are achieved. Moreover, due to the good beam quality of seed laser and the well-designed amplifier stage, the beam quality of the output laser is near-diffraction-limited with $M_{x}^{2}\sim 1.18$ and $M_{y}^{2}\sim 1.24$ at the maximum power, and without mode instability occurring.
