In the framework of the vibronic theory of ferroelectricity for the transparency region of tetragonal BaTiO3 components and of nonlinear optical susceptibility responsible for the second harmonic generation and the optical rectification are calculated. Selection rules for dipole transitions in the Γ point of the first Brilouin zone are extended over the whole zone. Calculations are confined to lowest order in expansion of susceptibilities in power series of low symmetry lattice distortion. Numerical values of susceptibilities have experimentally observed order of magnitude. The spectral behavior of and is calculated as well.

ABSTRACTNew noncentrosymmetric compounds having both electron-accepting and electron-donating substituents on a conjugated, aromatic heterocyclic structure were synthesized and their spectroscopic, thermal, and solubility properties were determined. D.C. electric field-induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) experiments were performed to provide values of the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility/dipole moment product βμ. Long alkyl substituents were required in heterocycle-containing compounds for sufficient solubility to conduct EFISH analysis. 2,4-Dinitro-substitution on these imine-linked materials gave the highest βμ in the series.

ABSTRACTSecond harmonic generation from Langmuir-Blodgett films of E-N-octadecyl-4-(2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)ethenyl)pyridinium iodide (a hemicyanine) interleaved with 4, 4'-dioctadecyl-3, 5, 3', 5'-tetramethyldipyrrylmethene hydrobromide (spacer) increases quadratically with the number of active layers, the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of film structures comprising from 1 to 150 bilayers being 70 pm/V. The synthesis and nonlinear optical properties are reported.
