The forming method has been widely used for manufacturing screw rotors with helical profile. This paper takes the manufacturing of screws for screw pumps as an example and uses the cubic spline interpolation method to obtain the tooth profile of the screw forming cutter according to the tooth profile at any end section of screws composed of discrete points and based on the principle of gearing mesh. Furthermore, this paper studies the space enveloping and geometric characteristics between the screw and cutter during the manufacturing process, combines the shape of the contact line, which is generated due to the cooperative motion of the machine tool, screw, and cutter, with spatial location parameters, and thus innovatively proposes a design method for the screw forming cutter based on discrete points, namely, the form-position geometric method (FPGM). It can be seen after comparing the proposed method with the principle of gear meshing that the cutter-workpiece enveloping solution model, simplified by the FPGM, can overcome the key technical difficulty, i.e., it is difficult to accurately calculate the cusp of the tooth curve; meanwhile, the proposed method can improve the precision of the cutter tooth profile design. Finally, the feasibility and superiority of FPGM are verified by experiments.

This paper aims to propose a design method for tooth profiles of spur gears based on given line of action. A simplified derivation of the mathematical model of tooth profiles is introduced according to the meshing theory. Tooth profiles of spur gears, using a parabola as line of action, is established. The result shows that it will be better to control the performances of a gear set by specifying the shape of the line of action rather than specifying tooth profiles of mating gear.

To help with the design of axial flow steam turbine blading a suite of flow analysis programs has been adapted and developed. Effort has been concentrated on improving the blade-to-blade analysis and developing a two-dimensional blade-to-blade profile design method. The development and verification of the analysis program have already been reported in detail (Willis, 1987 and Willis and Goulas, 1987). This paper presents the design or inverse solution. The analysis method uses an inviscid stream function solution coupled with an integral boundary layer calculation. In the design program the required changes in the blade geometry are effected via a transpiration type model. It is therefore a ‘profile refinement’, rather than an ‘original’ design procedure, and is necessarily an iterative solution. A required velocity distribution may be specified over only part of the blade surface. Two examples are presented in this paper to illustrate the capability of the design program.

Dynamic phase modulation is vital for tunable focusing, beaming, polarization conversion and holography. However, it remains challenging to achieve full 360∘ dynamic phase modulation while maintaining high reflectance or transmittance based on metamaterials or metasurfaces in the terahertz regime. Here we propose a doubly resonant graphene-metal hybrid metasurface to address this challenge. Simulation results show that by varying the graphene Fermi energy, the proposed metasurface with two shifting resonances is capable to provide dynamic phase modulation covering a range of 361∘ while maintaining relatively high reflectance above 20% at 1.05 THz. Based on the phase profile design, dynamically tunable beam steering and focusing are numerically demonstrated. We expect this work will advance the engineering of graphene metasurfaces for the dynamic manipulation of terahertz waves.

In this paper, authors proposed an effective quality index of bending operation and a new punch profile design method to prevent defects. The proposed quality index is presented in terms of distance of fracture location with respect to the topmost plane of blank, the maximum von Mises stress, and the maximum shear stress. The Taguchi method with L18 orthogonal array was adopted to evaluate the effects of design parameters and find out the optimum design of punch profile. A new punch feature called “golden finger” was proposed to control the material flow and move the fracture defects out of the trimming line. The results of this study had demonstrated the optimum die design can be achieved with the proposed golden finger feature to obtain a sound product.
