A new transmission X-ray imaging technique using ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) as a contrast mechanism is described. USAXS imaging can sometimes provide contrast in cases where radiography and phase-contrast imaging are unsuccessful. Images produced at different scattering vectors highlight different microstructural features within the same sample volume. When used in conjunction with USAXS scans, USAXS imaging provides substantial quantitative and qualitative three-dimensional information on the sizes, shapes and spatial arrangements of the scattering objects. The imaging technique is demonstrated on metal and biological samples.

SAXS shows that in polystyrene (PS)/polyisoprene (PI) block copolymers with lamellar morphologies there is a sufficient electron density difference for x-ray scattering [1]. It has been accepted, however, that this difference is insufficient for TEM imaging by amplitude contrast. Therefore, contrast has been produced by staining the PI phase with OsO4 [2]. Staining changes the mechanical and chemical structure of the PI phase perhaps altering the phase separation and the domain interfaces (figure 1).Mean inner potential calculations, however, show potentials of 8.29V for PS and 7.57V for PI. This indicates that for a simple specimen geometry (e.g. lamellar) with sharp phase interfaces oriented parallel to the incident beam, a film 500Å thick will provide a phase change (Δψ) of 0.3 radians at 100 KV. This phase change is sufficient for imaging under defocus conditions and contains information about the interface region between the domains. The phase change may be increased by using lower voltage (50% increase at 40 KV).

AbstractX-ray phase and dark-field contrast have recently been the source of much attention in the field of X-ray imaging, as they both contribute new imaging signals based on physical principles that differ from conventional X-ray imaging. With a so-called Talbot grating interferometer, both phase-contrast and dark-field images are obtained simultaneously with the conventional attenuation-based X-ray image, providing three complementary image modalities that are intrinsically registered. Whereas the physical contrast mechanisms behind attenuation and phase contrast are well understood, a formalism to describe the dark-field signal is still in progress. In this article, we report on correlative experimental results obtained with a grating interferometer and with small-angle X-ray scattering. Furthermore, we use a proposed model to quantitatively describe the results, which could be of great importance for future clinical and biomedical applications of grating-based X-ray imaging.

Abstract Grating-based x-ray phase-contrast imaging has the potential to enhance image quality and provide inner structure details non-destructively. In this work, using grating-based x-ray phase-contrast imaging system and employing integrating-bucket method, the quantitative expressions of signal-to-noise ratios due to photon statistics and mechanical error are analyzed in detail. Photon statistical noise and mechanical error are the main sources affecting the image noise in x-ray grating interferometry. Integrating-bucket method is a new phase extraction method translated to x-ray grating interferometry; hence, its image quality analysis would be of great importance to get high-quality phase image. The authors’ conclusions provide an alternate method to get high-quality refraction signal using grating interferometer, and hence increases applicability of grating interferometry in preclinical and clinical usage.
