Purpose: To compare enhanced depth imaging (EDI) and non-EDI swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in their ability to capture the suprachoroidal space (SCS). Materials and methods: Twenty volunteers with a minimum age of 18 years without any ocular pathology and refractive error below Å} 2 diopters underwent SS-OCT foveal scanning, with and without EDI. Masked averaged B-scan lines were analyzed for presence of the SCS. When the SCS was seen, the percentage of the scan on which this structure could be unequivocally observed was measured. Scores obtained from the images taken with or without EDI were then compared. Results: Thirty-seven eyes were analysed, since three eyes of three different patients were eliminated, as the outer border of the choroid was insufficiently delineated with both modalities. The SCS was not detected at all on 14 pictures (37.8%) obtained by non-EDI SS-OCT and 9 pictures (24.3%) obtained by EDI SS-OCT. When the SCS was detected with both modalities, it was observable on 27.2+/-24.2% of the scan without EDI and 40.4+/-30.3 of the scan with EDI (p < .001) Conclusions: EDI SS-OCT enables a more frequent and extensive visualization of the suprachoroidal space than non-EDI SS-OCT. This new approach could be considered as the most accurate modality to currently visualize the SCS in vivo.

Abstract Purpose To describe the feasibility of peripheral OCT imaging in retinal diseases using a novel full-field device. Methods A total of 134 consecutive eyes were referred and imaged on the Optos Silverstone swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) (Optos PLC; Dunfermline, UK). Scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) images and the associated SS-OCT images were obtained in the posterior pole, mid-periphery or far periphery based on the nature of the referral and on new areas of interest observed in the optomap images at the time of imaging. Results A total of 134 eyes (96 patients) were enrolled in the study. One hundred and twenty-five eyes (91 patients) with 38 retinal pathologies were prospectively assessed and 9 eyes (5 patients) were excluded due to incomplete image acquisition. The average age of the subjects was 54 years (range 21–92 years). Thirty-nine out of 125 eyes (31%) had macular pathologies. Eighty-six out of 125 eyes (69%) had peripheral only pathologies, an area which cannot be visualized by standard OCT devices with a 50 degree field-of-view. Conclusions The ability to capture peripheral pathologies using an integrated SLO-UWF imaging with full-field swept-source provided high-grade anatomical insight that confirmed the medical and surgical management in a majority of cases. Its use in the mid- and far periphery provides a holistic clinical picture, which can potentially aid in the understanding of various retinal pathologies.

Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) shows potential for the in vivo quantitative evaluation of micro-structural enamel surface phenomena occurring during early erosive demineralization. This randomized controlled single-blind cross-over clinical study aimed to evaluate the use of SS-OCT for detecting optical changes in the enamel of 30 healthy volunteers subjected to orange juice rinsing (erosive challenge) in comparison to mineral water rinsing (control), according to wiped and non-wiped enamel surface states. Participants were randomly allocated to 60 min of orange juice rinsing (pH 3.8) followed by 60 min of water rinsing (pH 6.7) and vice versa, with a 2-week wash-out period. In addition, the labial surfaces of the right or left maxillary incisors were wiped prior to SS-OCT imaging. An automated ImageJ algorithm was designed to analyse the back-scattered OCT signal intensity (D) after orange juice rinsing compared to after water rinsing. D was quantified as the OCT signal scattering from the 33 µm sub-surface enamel, normalised by the total OCT signal intensity entering the enamel. The back-scattered OCT signal intensity increased by 3.1% (95% CI 1.1-5.1%) in the wiped incisors and by 3.5% (95% CI 1.5-5.5%) in the unwiped incisors (p < 0.0001). Wiping reduced the back-scattered OCT signal intensity by 1.7% (95% CI -3.2 to -0.3%; p = 0.02) in comparison to the unwiped enamel surfaces for both rinsing solutions (p = 0.2). SS-OCT detected OCT signal changes in the superficial sub-surface enamel of maxillary central incisor teeth of healthy volunteers after orange juice rinsing.
